To check the feasibility of SMART(Steam Methane Advanced Reforming Technology) system, an experimental investigation was performed. A fluidized bed reactor of diameter 0.052m was operated cyclically up to 10th cycle, alternating between reforming and regeneration conditions. FCR-4 catalyst was used as the reforming catalyst and calcined limestone(domestic, from Danyang) was used as the $CO_2$ absorbent. Hydrogen concentration of 98.2% on a dry basis was reached at $650^{\circ}C$ for the first cycle. This value is much higher than $H_2$ concentration of 73.6% in the reformer of conventional SMR (steam methane reforming) condition. The hydrogen concentration decreased because the $CO_2$ capture capacity decreased as the number of cycles increased. However, the average hydrogen concentration at 10th cycle was 82.5% and this value is also higher than that of SMR. Based on these results, we could conclude that the SMART system can replace SMR system to generate pure hydrogen without HTS (high tempeature shift), LTS (low temperature shift) and $CO_2$ separation process.

Hydrogen has been gaining a lot of attention as a possible clean energy source that can aid in reaching carbon neutrality. Currently, hydrogen production has relied on the steam reforming of fossil fuels. However, due to the carbon dioxide emissions caused by this process, hydrogen production based on the steam reforming of bio-oil derived from biomass has been proposed as an alternative approach. In order to use this alternative approach efficiently, one of the key issues that must be overcome is that the complexity of bio-oil, which has a large molecular weight and diverse functional groups of hydrocarbons, promotes the catalytic deactivation of nickel-based catalysts. In this review, research efforts to improve nickel-based catalysts for the steam reforming of bio-oil have been discussed in terms of the active phase, support, and promoters. The active phases are involved in activating C-C and C-H bonds of high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons, and noble and transition metals can be utilized. In terms of the support and promoters, the catalytic deactivation of Ni-based catalysts can be inhibited by utilizing reactive lattice oxygen for support or by suppressing the acidity. The development of active and stable Ni-based reforming catalysts plays a critical role in clean hydrogen production based on bio-oils.
Hydrogen energy will be considered one of the most important energy carries for the future not only as raw material of petroleum chemical industry but also as the fuel of the fuel cell. The hydrogen production based upon the water electrolysis system combined renewable energy or atomic power energy is being watched as long-term hydrogen sources. Hydrogen from fossil fuel, especially natural gas steam reforming, is the economical mass production method at this time. But the cost of $CO_2$ reduction is added in the economic analysis of hydrogen production processes. Therefore many different results are suggested from these analyses about old processes, and modified schemes are studying for the efficient development. In this review, status for the technology of hydrogen production from natural gas are summarized.

LFG (Land-Fill Gas) includes components of $CH_4$, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$, and water. The preparation of synthesis gas from LFG as a DME (Dimethyl Ether) feedstock was studied by methane reforming of $CO_2$, $O_2$ and steam over NiO-MgO-$CeO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst. Our experiments were performed to investigate the effects of methane conversion and syngas ratio on the amount of LFG components over NiO-MgO-$CeO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst. Results were obtained through the activity reaction experiments at the temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ and GHSV of 4,000. The results were as following; it has generally shown that methane conversion rate increased with the increase of oxygen and carbon dioxide amounts. Highly methane conversion of 92~93% and syngas ratio of approximately 1.0 were obtained in the feed of gas composition flow-rate of 243ml/min of $CH_4$, 241ml/min of $CO_2$, 195ml/min of $O_2$, 48ml/min of $N_2$, and 360ml/min of water, respectively, under reactor pressure of 15 bar for 50 hrs of reaction time. Also, it was shown that catalyst deactivation by coke formation was reduced by excessively adding oxygen and steam as an oxidizer of the methane reforming.

The comparison work was conducted for the methanol steam reforming among commercial Cu-based catalysts, viz. ICI-M45, which is for the methanol synthesis, MDC-3 and MDC-7, which are for the water-gas shift reaction. The catalytic activity for the water-gas shift reaction was also compared over three catalysts. Among them, MDC-7 showed the highest methanol conversion and formation rate of hydrogen and carbon dioxide at 473 K for the methanol steam reforming. To find out any promotional effect between ICI-M45 and MDC-7, three different packing methods with these two catalysts were examined. However, no synergistic effect was observed. The catalytic activity for watergas shift reaction decreased in the following order: MDC-7 > MDC-3 > ICI-M45. The highest activity of MDC-7 for the methanol steam reforming as well as the water-gas shift reaction can be due to its high surface area, copper dispersion, and an adequate Cu/Zn ratio.
It is desired that carbon dioxide causing a greenhouse effect be removed at a high temperature and high pressure in a steam reforming reaction. In this research, a pellet form of adsorbent CaO is employed to capture $CO_2$. The adsorbent was manufactured using a high pressure molding on powdered $CaCO_3$ followed by calcination. Then its properties were analyzed and the adsorption experiments were carried out in a batch adsorption chamber. The pore area was found to be dependent on a molding pressure and the pore distribution showed two peaks. It is examined that $CO_2$ binds to CaO by means of chemisorption and its maximum conversion is nearly $80\%$ at $700^{\circ}C$.
In this study, the reaction characteristics of combined steam and carbon dioxide reforming of methane (CSCRM) reaction using Pd-Ni-YSZ catalyst were investigated according to types of catalysts and gas compositions. Catalysts were prepared in the form of powder and porous disk. The injected gases were supplied at different ratios of $CH_4/CO_2/H_2O$. As a result, the conversion of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ was improved as a result of using the porous disc type catalyst as compared with that of the powder type catalyst. When the $CH_4/CO_2/H_2O$ ratio of the feed gas was 1 : 0.5 : 0.5, the $H_2/CO$ ratio was adjusted close to 2. However, after 6 hours of the reaction, $CH_4$ conversion was partially reduced by the carbon deposition and the pressure drop increased from 0.1 to 0.8. This issue was then solved by optimizing the water content. As a result, it was confirmed that the durability was secured by preventing the carbon deposition when the gas was supplied at a $CH_4/CO_2/H_2O$ ratio of 1 : 0.5 : 1, and the conversion rate was maintained at a relatively high level.
Cu-Zn and Cu-Zn-Ti catalysts for the steam reforming of methanol were prepared. This reaction was carried out at atmospheric pressure, $250^{\circ}C$, steam/methanol molar ratio 1.5, and contact time 0.1 g-cat.hr/mL-feed. In case of the catalyst with 3 mol% of $TiO_2$, the activity was superior to that of catalysts without $TiO_2$. The reaction products were mainly hydrogen and carbon dioxide. It was found that catalytic activity was not related to specific surface area but affected by metallic copper area which was measured by $N_2O$ decomposition and increased with the addition of $TiO_2$ content. XPS and XRD showed that the oxidation state of zinc was not changed during reaction, but oxidation states of copper existed in Cu(0) or Cu(I).

An apparatus for generating flames and more particularly the microwave plasma burner for generating high-temperature large-volume plasma flame was presented. The plasma burner was composed of micvrowave transmission lines, a field applicator, discharge tube, coal and gas supply systems, and a reactor. The plasma burner is operated by injecting coal powders into a 2.45 GHz microwave plasma torch and by mixing the resultant gaseous hydrogen and carbon compounds with plasma-forming gas. We in this work used air, oxygen, steam, and their mixtures as a discharge gas or oxidant gas. The microwave plasma torch can instantaneously vaporize and decompose the hydrogen and carbon containing fuels. It was observed that the flame volume of the burner was more than 50 times that of the torch plasma. The preliminary experiments were carried out by measuring the temperature profiles of flames along the radial and axial directions. We also investigated the characteristics for coal combustion and gasification by analyzing the byproducts from the exit of reactor. As expected, various byproducts such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, etc. were detected. It is expected that such burner cab be applied to coal gasification, hydrocarbon reforming, industrial boiler of power plants, etc.

A simulation study on SCR (Steam Carbon dioxide Reforming) process in gas-to-liquid (natural gas to Fischer-Tropsch synthetic fuel) process was carried out in order to find optimum reaction conditions for GTL (gas-to-liquid) process reaction. Optimum SCR operating conditions for synthesis gas to FT (Fischer-Tropsch) process were determined by changing reaction variables such as feed temperature and pressure. During the simulation, overall synthesis process was assumed to proceed under steady-state conditions. It was also assumed that physical properties of reaction medium were governed by RKS (Redlich-Kwong-Soave) equation. SCR process was considered as reaction models for synthesis gas in GTL proess. The effect of temperature and pressure on SCR process $H_2$/CO ratio and the effect of reaction pressure on SCR reaction were mainly examined. Simulation results were also compared to experimental results to confirm the reliability of simulation model. Simulation results were reasonably well matched with experimental results.
