The flow pattern at the inlet of the catalyst layer in a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system is one of the key parameters influencing the performance of the denitrification process. In the curved diffusing parts between the ammonia injection grids and the catalyst layers, guide vanes are installed to improve flow uniformity. In the present study, a numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the effect of the geometrical configuration of the guide vanes on the aerodynamic characteristics of a denitrification facility. This application has been made to the existing SCR process in a large-scaled coal-fired power plant. The flow domain to be solved covers the whole region of the flow passages from the exit of the ammonia injection gun to the exit of the catalyst layers. ANSYS-Fluent was used to calculate the three-dimensional steady viscous flow fields with the proper turbulence model fitted to the flow characteristics. The root mean square of velocity and the pressure drop inside the flow passages were chosen as the key performance parameters. Four types of guides vanes were proposed to improve the flow quality compared to the current configuration. The numerical results showed that the type 4 configuration was the most effective at improving the aerodynamic performance in terms of flow uniformity and pressure loss.
This study investigates the natural convection of air(Pr=0.7) between two walls having a small- wave- number sinusoidal temperature distributions with a phase difference. The wave number and the phase difference of wall temperatures are k=0.5 and ㄱ/2, respectively. In the conduction-dominated regime at small Rayleigh number, two slightly inclined cells are formed over one wave length. At higher Rayleigh number, however, multicellular convection occurs in thermally unstable region. A spatial symmetry is intermittently broken in the transient period at the Rayleigh number near the critical value. The steady-state flows always satisfy the spatial symmetry. A steep increase of Nusselt number occurs near the Rayleigh number at which transition of flow pattern occurs.

The use of gas absorption refrigeration machine has considerably increased because of the shortage of the electric power in the summer and the regulation of freon refrigerant. Gas absorption refrigeration machine consists of a condenser, a heat exchanger. supplying pipes, a radiator etc, This system is likely to be corroded by acid. dissolved oxygen and gases, Cavitation erosion-corrosion by flow velocity of cooling water may happen in absorption refrigeration machine. In these cases. erosion and corrosion occur simultaneously. Then, it makes a serious damage with synergy effect. Therefore, this paper was studied on the cavitation damage of cupronickel(70/30) tube for gas absorption refrigeration machine, In the $30^{\circ}C$ tap water, linear polarization test and anodic polarization test were carried out for copper(C1220T-OL) and cupronickel(70/30) tube. Also, cavitation erosion-corrosion behavior of cupronickel (70/30) tube was considered, The main results are as following: (1) In the linear test, the corrosion current density of cupronickel(70/30) is higher than that of copper. (2) The erosion-corrosion rate of cupronickel(70/30) displayed later tendency than that of copper by vibratory cavitation in cooling water. (3) In cooling water, the progress mechanism of erosion-corrosion rate of copper and cupronickel(70/30) follows a pattern of incubation, acceleration, attenuation and a steady state period.

A numerical analysis is carried out to study the two-dimensional steady state natural convection from vertical wires immersed in cold pure water. The surface of the wire is $0^{\circ}C$ unifrom temperature. Results of the analysis are presented for free stream temperature from $0^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ and the aspect ratio N from $5.26{\times}10^{-3}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-3}$. The effects of the density extremum and aspect ratio on the flow pattern and the heat transfer characteristics are discussed As the aspect ratio N becomes larger, in the range of $1.0^{\circ}C{\leq}T_{\infty}{\leq}4.4^{\circ}C$ and $6{^{\circ}C}{\leq}T_{\infty}{\leq}17^{\circ}C$, the effect of Pr number on the heat transfer is shown to be more significant than the aspect ratio. Investigating into the effect of the density extremum on the heat transfer from wires, the new heat transfer correlations are suggested with the relation of average Nu mumber vs. modified Ra number. Here, the coefficient values C of correlations are presented as the function of density extremum parameter $R^*$. The effects of the density extremum parameter are also discussed.

This study used Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) to assess the properties of the air current inflow and the flow velocity distribution in the fume hood. In order to verify the effect of improvement, it was also predicted the characteristics of the flow pattern in case the hood face is structurally improved. The assessment of the capture velocity with the existing fume hood confirmed maximum 23 to 30% difference as compared to the root mean square (RMS). And the hood face showed great difference in flow velocity, with the flow velocity in the upper part is 58 to 68% faster than that in the lower part of the hood. So, as a result of the improvement of the hood designed to maintain a steady exhaust at the hood face (that is, installing a baffle on the inner wall and designing the slot type face), a difference of maximum 7% as compared to RMS appeared while maximum 12% differentiation in flow velocity through sections was predicted, showing mitigation of much of the difference in control velocity as compared to the previous structure.
The capital city of Himalayan Country Nepal, Kathmandu Valley is surrounded by consecutive high mountains, which limits the air distribution and mixing effects significantly. It in turn generates steady air flow pattern over a year except in monsoon season. The air shed in the Valley is easily trapped by the surrounded mountains and the inversion layer formulated as the cap. The $PM_{10}$ concentration was noticeably higher than the standard level (120 ${\mu}g/m^3$) in urban and suburban area of Kathmandu valley for all seasons except monsoon period. The Valley area experiences similar wind patterns (W, WWS, and S) for a year but the Easterly wind prevails only during the monsoon period. There was low and calm wind blows during the winter season. Because of this air flow structure, the air emission from various sources is accumulated within the valley air, high level of air pollution is frequently recorded with other air polluted cities over the world. In this Valley area, brick kilns are recognized as the major air pollution source followed by vehicles. Mostly Bull Trench Kiln (BKT), Hoffman Kiln and Vertical Shaft Brick Kiln (VSBK) are in operation for brick firing in Kathmandu valley where the fuels such as crushed coal, saw dust, and natural gas are used for processing bricks in this study. Tool for the Reduction and Assessment of Chemical and Other Environmental Impacts (TRACI) was used for screening and quantifying the potential impacts of air emission from firing fuels. The total Environmental Performance Score (EPS) was estimated and the EPS of coal was approximately 2.5 times higher than those of natural gas and saw dust. It is concluded that the crushed coal has more negative impact to the environment and human health than other fuel sources. Concerning the human health and environment point of view, alternative environment friendly firing fuel need to be used for brick industry in the kiln and the air pollution control devices also need to be applied for minimizing the air emissions from the kilns.

The common-rail injectors are the most critical component of the CRDI diesel engines that dominantly affect engine performances through high pressure injection with exact control. Thus, from now on the advanced combustion technologies for common-rail diesel injection engine require high performance fuel injectors. Accordingly, the previous studies on the numerical and experimental analysis of the diesel injector have focused on a optimum geometry to induce proper injection rate. In this study, computational predictions of performance of the diesel injector have been performed to evaluate internal flow characteristics for various needle lift and the spray pattern at the nozzle exit. To our knowledge, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the internal flow passage of an entire injector duct including injection and return routes has never been studied. In this study, major design parameters concerning internal routes in the injector are optimized by using a CFD analysis and Response Surface Method (RSM). The computational prediction of the internal flow characteristics of the common-rail diesel injector was carried out by using STAR-CCM+7.06 code. In this work, computations were carried out under the assumption that the internal flow passage is a steady-state condition at the maximum needle lift. The design parameters are optimized by using the L16 orthogonal array and polynomial regression, local-approximation characteristics of RSM. Meanwhile, the optimum values are confirmed to be valid in 95% confidence and 5% significance level through analysis of variance (ANOVA). In addition, optimal design and prototype design were confirmed by calculating the injection quantities, resulting in the improvement of the injection performance by more than 54%.

This study evaluated the effect of aspect ratio of an enclosure with a heated inner circular cylinder on three-dimensional natural convection. The immersed boundary method was used to model the inner circular cylinder based on the finite volume method. The Rayleigh number was varied between $10^5$ and $10^6$, and the Prandtl number was maintained at 0.7. The aspect ratio of the three-dimensional enclosure was changed in steps of 1 within a range of 1-4 by increasing the width of the enclosure. In this study, the flow and thermal fields in the enclosure reached the steady state, and showed a mirror-symmetric pattern with respect to the center plane (x=0). In addition, the surface-averaged Nusselt number of the inner circular cylinder increased, while the total surface-averaged Nusselt number of the enclosure walls decreased with increase in the aspect ratio of the enclosure.

Household refrigerator radiates noise of which the pattern is dependent on the operating condition of its parts, such as compressor, flow fans, etc. Thus the refrigerator noise has a variety of frequency characteristics. Therefore, it is required to consider the noise characteristics for evaluating the noise quality and eventually developing the sound quality index of the refrigerator noise. In this study, five units of household refrigerator were selected to measure their noises that were used to generate sound sources for jury test of the study. The measured noises of five refrigerators were divided into ten kinds of sound source by considering operating condition and frequency characteristics. Additionally, the ten sources were each edited to have the same SPL of 30 dBA. Totally twenty kinds of sound sources (10-original SPL, 10-edited SPL 30 dBA) were evaluated by twenty-two subjects, and compared with their sound quality metrics. It was found that only the loudness of the metrics was meaningfully correlated with the subjective evaluation. The rests, sharpness, roughness and fluctuation strength, were not related. The conclusion of this study is that a new sophisticated index is necessary to be developed to qualitatively evaluate the household refrigerator noise.
Sleep alters both breathing pattern and the ventilatory responses to external stimuli. These changes during sleep permit the development or aggravation of sleep-related hypoxemia in patients with respiratory disease and contribute to the pathogenesis of apneas in patients with the sleep apnea syndrome. Fundamental effects of sleep on the ventilatory control system are 1) removal of wakefulness input to the upper airway leading to the increase in upper airway resistance, 2) loss of wakefulness drive to the respiratory pump, 3) compromise of protective respiratory reflexes, and 4) additional sleep-induced compromise of ventilatory control initiated by reduced functional residual capacity on supine position assumed in sleep, decreased $CO_2$ production during sleep, and increased cerebral blood flow in especially rapid eye movement(REM) sleep. These effects resulted in periodic breathing during unsteady non-rapid eye movement(NREM) sleep even in normal subjects, regular but low ventilation during steady NREM sleep, and irregular breathing during REM sleep. Sleep-induced breathing instabilities are divided due primarily to transient increase in upper airway resistance and those that involve overshoots and undershoots in neural feedback mechanisms regulating the timing and/or amplitude of respiratory output. Following ventilatory overshoots, breathing stability will be maintained if excitatory short-term potentiation is the prevailing influence. On the other hand, apnea and hypopnea will occur if inhibitory mechanisms dominate following the ventilatory overshoot. These inhibitory mechanisms include 1) hypocapnia, 2) inhibitory effect from lung stretch, 3) baroreceptor stimulation, 4) upper airway mechanoreceptor reflexes, 5) central depression by hypoxia, and 6) central system inertia. While the respiratory control system functions well during wakefulness, the control of breathing is commonly disrupted during sleep. These changes in respiratory control resulting in breathing instability during sleep are related with the pathophysiologic mechanisms of obstructive and/or central apnea, and have the therapeutic implications for nocturnal hypoventilation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or alveolar hypoventilation syndrome.
