  • Inventory survey is process collecting data about cut slope. It's different from inspection. It contains not only basic information about cut slope, especially location, GPS positioning, height, length, weathering, joint direction, water conditions but also level of danger and damage. Collected data are being used get at status about cut slope along national roads. And It helps judging about priority of detailed investigation. According to results of analysis, we found better method about maintenance of cut slope. Later on, if inventory research is finished, we will understand characteristics of collapse slopes.

  • KICT (Korea Institute of Construction and Technology) and KISTEC (Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation) have been carrying out inventory survey on cut slopes along national roads since 2006. Unlike precision safety check, cut slope inventory survey is a simple check about cut slope's characteristics with the naked eye to collect the data base of slope maintenance. Inventory survey is classified into general status, cut slope characteristics and inspector opinions. The inventory data are analyzed to identify dangerous slopes and decide a safety ranking. In this paper, we performed a correlation analysis using SPSS (ver.15) about the 10,461 cut slope inventory data which are collected in Kangwondo and Chungcheongdo from 2006 to 2008. We calculated the correlation coefficient between cut slope inventory data and the danger score derived from the data. And we evaluated cut slope inventory data which have the more influence on the danger degree of cut slope. According to results of correlation analysis, we found that inventory data influencing cut slope danger degree are stuck and fallen rock, orientation of discontinuity and angle of upper slope. And these data are slightly different by regionally. Later on, if inventory research is finished, we will understand regional characteristics of cut slopes.

  • Occasionlly, a lot of plants withered on the marine upheaval soil, because of the potential acid sulfate soil. It was necessary to investigate the chemistry of soil, before planting on Ulsan-Jungjadong cut-slope of road construction site. Cut-slope surface soils were sampled on the every varying points in soil colour and analyzed chemically. Germination status of seeds in sample soils was investigated such as Albizzia julibrissin, Festuca arundinacea. Relationship between germination status and chemistry of soil was analyzed. The results of investigation and analysis are as follows. 1. Germination of seeds was inhibited, less than pH($H_2O$ 1 : 5) 2.63. 2. Germination of seeds was inhibited, more than EC($H_2O_2$ 1 : 5) 13.4mS. 3. Germination of seeds was inhibited, more than aluminum ion content 2.0ppm in soil solution extracted by A$H_2O$ and 6.2ppm by $H_2O_2$. 4. pH($H_2O$ 1 : 5), EC($H_2O_2$ 1 : 5) and aluminum ion content proved chemical indicators of seed germination inhibition, in case of potential acid sulfate soil.

  • This study examined 233 cut slopes in Gyeongnam region; evaluated hazards and slope conditions involved in the slope; and determined the priority order for reinforcement. The conclusions are summarized in the following. (1) The slopes that need reinforcement or maintenance are 153, accounting for 65.6% of the entire slopes. Slopes with a length of $0{\sim}200m$ account for 70.9%; slopes with a height of $10{\sim}20m$ account for over 50%. (2) Slopes with slope of more than 1:0.5 account for 70.9% of the entire slopes. The steepness of the slope is owing to more rock slopes than soil slopes. (3) The percentages of rock slopes, soil slopes, complex slopes mixed with rocks and soil, and slopes comprised of igneous rocks are 54.4%, 24.9%, 20.7%, and 54.1%, respectively. (4) In the rock area occurred cave-in, plain failure, wedge failure, and overturning failure, in order. Slopes with volcanic rocks are the most unstable, while sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks are relatively stable. (5) When the slope height is over 20m, low grade slopes are more than 80%; leading to the conclusion that the higher the slope height is, the more unstable the slope is.

  • Many cut slopes are located near national highways, resulting in large annual damage to infrastructure from the collapse of cut slopes. Therefore, to effectively maintain cut slopes, high-risk slopes should be identified and monitored. In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of the management of cut slopes using the risk score calculated from cut-slope inventory data. The inventory survey, as a simple assessment of the characteristics of various slopes, was performed to collect basic data that could be obtained visually in the field for the management of cut slopes. This method is not a precise survey, and it was composed of the general status and characteristics of cut slopes, the inspector's assessment, and inventory data in order to estimate a risk score for each slope. In this paper, we calculated the risk score by investigating the present status of cut slopes adjacent to 10,461 national roads. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of using risk score data, we compared the score for stable slopes with those of failed cut slopes. Failed cut slopes occurred in sections with the highest risk score. The results show that risk score derived from the inventory survey of cut slopes are useful in the management of cut slopes with risk of failure and in monitoring large numbers of cut slopes.
