  • In this paper, we propose a classification-based approach for hybridizing statistical machine translation and rulebased machine translation. Both the training dataset used in the learning of our proposed classifier and our feature extraction method affect the hybridization quality. To create one such training dataset, a previous approach used auto-evaluation metrics to determine from a set of component machine translation (MT) systems which gave the more accurate translation (by a comparative method). Once this had been determined, the most accurate translation was then labelled in such a way so as to indicate the MT system from which it came. In this previous approach, when the metric evaluation scores were low, there existed a high level of uncertainty as to which of the component MT systems was actually producing the better translation. To relax such uncertainty or error in classification, we propose an alternative approach to such labeling; that is, a cut-off method. In our experiments, using the aforementioned cut-off method in our proposed classifier, we managed to achieve a translation accuracy of 81.5% - a 5.0% improvement over existing methods.

  • This paper proposes a statistical model for the translation of prepositions in English-Korean machine translation. In the proposed model, statistical information acquired from unlabeled Korean corpora is used to choose the best translation from several possible translations. Such information includes functional word-verb co-occurrence information, functional word-verb distance information, and noun-postposition co-occurrence information. The model was evaluated with 443 sentences, each of which has a prepositional phrase, and we attained 71.3% accuracy.

  • Clustering is well known method and that can be used in statistical machine translation. In this paper we propose a corpus clustering method using syntactic structure and POS information of dependency grammar. And using this cluster language model as additional feature to phrased-based statistical machine translation system to improve translation Quality.

  • To eliminate ambiguities in the existing methods to simplify Chinese pronunciation learning, we propose a model that can predict the pronunciation of Chinese characters automatically. The proposed model relies on a statistical machine translation (SMT) framework. In particular, we consider the components of Chinese characters as the basic unit and consider the pronunciation prediction as a machine translation procedure (the component sequence as a source sentence, the pronunciation, pinyin, as a target sentence). In addition to traditional features such as the bidirectional word translation and the n-gram language model, we also implement a component similarity feature to overcome some typos during practical use. We incorporate these features into a log-linear model. The experimental results show that our approach significantly outperforms other baseline models.

  • Recently, statistical machine translation (SMT) has received many attention with ease of its implementation and maintenance. The goal of our works is to build bidirectional Korean-Japanese SMT system by using MOSES [1] system. We use Korean-Japanese bilingual corpus which is aligned per sentence to train the translation model and use a large raw corpus in each language to train each language model. The proposed system shows results comparable to those of a rule-based machine translation system. Most of errors are caused by noises occurred in each processing stage.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a set of basic guidelines for the construction of English test suites, a set of basic guidelines for the construction of Korean test suites to objectively evaluate the performance of machine translation systems. For this end, we constructed 650 English test sentences, 650 Korean test sentences, and developed the statistical methods and tools for the comparative evaluation of the English-Korean machine translation systems. It also evaluates the existing commercial English-Korean machine translation systems. The importance of this research lies in that it will promote an awareness of the importance and need of testing machine translation systems within the Natural Language Community. This research will also make a big contribution to the development of evaluation methods and techniques for appropriate test suites for Korean information processing systems. The results of this research can be used by the natural language community to test the performance and development of their information processing systems or machine translation systems.

  • Clustering method which based on sentence type or document genre is a technique used to improve translation quality of SMT(statistical machine translation) by domain-specific translation. But there is no previous research using sentence type and document genre information simultaneously. In this paper, we suggest an integrated clustering method that classifying sentence type by syntactic structure similarity and document genre by word similarity information. We interpolated domain-specific models from clusters with general models to improve translation quality of SMT system. Kernel function and cosine measures are applied to calculate structural similarity and word similarity. With these similarities, we used machine learning algorithms similar to K-means to clustering. In Japanese-English patent translation corpus, we got 2.5% point relative improvements of translation quality at optimal case.

  • This paper aims to describe a German-Korean machine translation system for nominal phrases. Besides, we have two subgoals. First, we are going to revea linguistic differences between two languages and propose a language-informational method fo overcome the differences. The method is based on an integrated model of translation knowledge, efficient information structure, and concordance selection. Then, we will show the statistical results about translation experiment and its evaluation as an evidence for the adequacy of our linguistic method and translation system itself.

  • We propose a method to improve search time and space complexity in statistical machine translation architectures, by employing linguistic bracketing information on the source language sentence. It is one of the advantages of the probabilistic formulation that competing translations may be compared and ranked by a. principled measure, but at the same time, optimizing likelihoods over the translation spa.ce dictates heavy search costs. To make statistical architectures practical, heuristics to reduce search computation must be incorporated. An experiment applying our method to a prototype Chinese-English translation system demonstrates substantial improvement.
