  • Various kinds of ordination methods such as correspondence analysis and canonical correspondence analysis are used in community ecology to visualize relationships among species, sites, and environmental variables. Ter Braak (1986), Jackson and Somers (1991), Parmer (1993), compared the ordination methods using eigenvalue and distance graph. However, these methods did not show the relationship between population and biplot because they are only based on surveyed data. In this paper, a method that measures the extent to show population information to biplot was introduced to compare ordination methods objectively.

  • Ko(1998, 1999) proposed certain flexible two-stage plans that could be served as one-step interim analysis in on-going clinical trials. The proposed Plans are optimal simultaneously in both a Bayes and a Neyman-Pearson sense. The Neyman-Pearson interpretation is that average expected sample size is being minimized, subject just to the two overall error rates $\alpha$ and $\beta$, respectively of first and second kind. The Bayes interpretation is that Bayes risk, involving both sampling cost and wrong decision losses, is being minimized. An example of this correspondence are given by using a binomial setting.

  • As a recurrent congestion of urban freeway occurs in almost same time and section, it is possible to manage the congestion effectively by the expectation and advance correspondence. In the existing traffic management system. we have used pattern data to manage a recurrent congestion. But it is not applicable to an urban freeway which kas various traffic circumstance. In this study, the probability by travel speed using a statistical distribution method will be used to predict the probability of recurrent congestion. It is expected that we can get the point of time and the duration of recurrent congestion, and we can devise an effective advance correspondence and a transportation operation.

  • This study investigated and compared the brand personality of domestically run family restaurants with quick service restaurants. Information was elicited from respective patrons using self-administered questionnaires which asked questions on recognizable brand characteristic and attributes of each restaurant through image maps. Data from the self-administrated questionnaires were collected and analysed using comparative statistical analysis, including frequency, t-test, chi-square, factor analysis, reliability analysis and correspondence analysis. Overall, patrons identified 5 factors which they used to rank individual restaurants; sophistication, competence, likeableness, trendiness, and ruggedness. Overall results showed the family restaurants that scored highly on likeableness and trendiness were Outback and TGIF. Furthermore, Vips was the only family restaurants that scored highly in ruggedness. In relation to quick service restaurants, Lotteria scored highest for competence while McDonalds and Burger King scored best for sophistication. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

  • A new relaxation algorithm based on distribution of matched errors and possibility is proposed to solve efficiently correspondence problem. This algorithm can be applied to various method, such as BMA, feature-, and region-based matching methods, by modifying its smoothness function. It consists of two stages which are transformation and iteration process. In transformation stage, the errors obtained by any matching algorithm are transformed to possibility values according to these statistical distribution. Each grade of possility is updated by some constraints which are defined as smoothness, uniqueness, and discontinuity factor in iteration stage. The discontinuity factor is used to reserve discontinuity of disparity. In conventional methods, it is difficult to find proper weights and stop condition, because only two factors, smoothness and uniqueness, have been used. However, in the proposed mthod, the more smoothing is not ocurred because of discontinuity factor. And it is efective to the various image, even if the image has a severe noise and repeating patterns. In addition, it is shown that the convergence rate and the quality of output are improved.

  • This study purports to depict the generational topography of welfare attitudes of Korean people. Three generational groups are made for analytical purpose, 'between 20-39 age group', 'between 40-59 age group', and '60 and older'. Two major statistical techniques are used, the analysis of variance and correspondence analysis. The analysis of variance shows that the respondents' attitudes upon 'social services target(universal vs selective)', 'education', 'housing', 'child-care', 'youth support', and 'employment' varies significantly by age groups. Correspondence analysis also shows that 'between 20-39 age group' is located with proximity with 'child-care', 'employment', and 'housing', while '60 and older' is located with 'poverty' and 'old age life care'. Clearly this study shows that there is generational difference on welfare consciousness in many areas of social policy. Overall, the results show that significant generational differences with regard to welfare attitudes clearly exist in current Korean society.

  • Compositional data consist of compositions that are non-negative vectors of proportions with the unit-sum constraint. In disciplines such as petrology and archaeometry, it is fundamental to statistically analyze this type of data. Aitchison (1983) introduced a log-contrast principal component analysis that involves logratio transformed data, as a dimension-reduction technique to understand and interpret the structure of compositional data. However, the analysis is not usable when zero values are present in the data. In this paper, we introduce 4 possible methods to reduce the dimension of compositional data with zero values. Two real data sets are analyzed using the methods and the obtained results are compared.

  • Interval censored data often occur in an observational study where the subject is followed periodically. Instead of observing an exact failure time, two inspection times that include it are available. There are several methods to analyze interval censored failure time data (Sun, 2006). However, in the presence of competing risks, few methods have been suggested to estimate covariate effect on interval censored competing risk data. A sub-distribution hazard model is a commonly used regression model because it has one-to-one correspondence with a cumulative incidence function. Alternatively, Klein and Andersen (2005) proposed a pseudo-value approach that directly uses the cumulative incidence function. In this paper, we consider an extension of the pseudo-value approach into the interval censored data to estimate regression coefficients. The pseudo-values generated from the estimated cumulative incidence function then become response variables in a generalized estimating equation. Simulation studies show that the suggested method performs well in several situations and an HIV-AIDS cohort study is analyzed as a real data example.
