  • The cause of corrosion failure found in structures or various components operating in severe corrosive environment has been attributed to stress corrosion cracking(SCC) which is resulting from the combined effects of corrosive environments and static tensile stress. Cathodic protection is an electrochemical method of corrosion control that is widely used in marine environment and primarily on carbon steel. A number of criteria are used to determine whether or not a structure is cathodically protected. In practice, -0.8V versus Ag/AgCl is the most commonly used for marine structures. This paper showed the combined effects of cathodic potential and slow, monotonic straining on the tensile ductility and fracture morphology of parents and friction welded joints for SM45C, SCM440 and SM20C steels in syntheic sea water(S.S.W.,pH:8.2). For the parent materials in cathodic potentials, the higher tensile strength is, the more susceptible SCC is. And the welded HAZ is more susceptible than the parent materials.

  • Recently the authors had proposed the z-pinning patch concept to simply manufacture z-pinned composite structures at industrial production site and manufactured composite single-lap shear joint specimens using the concept. Through static tensile test on the specimens they had obtained 54~68% improvement of the joint strength. As a sequential study of it, in this study, fatigue test has performed to measure an improvement of joint strength under cyclic loading. The z-pin's material is stainless steel and its surface was specially machined into zagged shapes and chemically corroded to increase the connection force with composite materials. Approximately 98~125% improvement of the joint strength under cyclic loading was obtained.

  • This paper presents results of biaxial compressive tests and strength criterion on two replacement percentages of recycled coarse aggregate (RPRCA) by mass for plain structural recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) at all kinds of stress ratios. The failure mode characteristic of specimens and the direction of the cracks were observed and described. The two principally static strengths in the corresponding stress state were measured. The influence of the stress ratios on the biaxial strengths of RAC was also analyzed. The experimental results showed that the ratios of the biaxial compressive strength ${\sigma}_{3f}$ to the corresponding uniaxial compressive strength $f_c$ for the two RAC are higher than that of the conventional concrete (CC), and dependent on the replacement percentages of recycled coarse aggregate, stress states and stress ratios; however, the differences of tensile-compressive ratios for the two RAC and CC are smaller. On this basis, a new failure criterion with the stress ratios is proposed for plain RAC under biaxial compressive stress states. It provides the experimental and theoretical foundations for strength analysis of RAC structures subject to complex loads.

  • Extensive sets of data on the mechanical properties of more than 1000 granite specimens were analyzed to derive the relationships of the various properties: those are, (1) density, (2) porosity, (3) absorption ratio, (4) sonic wave velocity, (5) uniaxial compressive strength, (6) tensile strength, and (7) dynamic & static Young's moduli. The results will be of use to understand the mechanical characteristics of granites and some unknown properties can be estimated from the others. The various equations derived from the least square regression analysis and a brief description of the correlations are presented in this paper.

  • In this study, after concrete cylinders were made on the condition of varying water-to -cement ratio, and cured 80 days compressive strength and splitting tensile strength were performed and moduls of elasticy is obtained. The fracture energy was obtained by acting three point bending on the 80cm in length. This test involved static loading test and dynamic loading test. In this work, the new interrelation of the material constants was obtained clearly and the property of the mixture was inspected, including the relation between the fracture energy and all kind of the material constants.

  • The center floor is a part of underbody of cars. The assembling method is mostly a resistant spot welding. But the resistant spot welding has many demerits in productivity such as low welding speed, large spatter occurring, hard to verify the welding quality. The laser welding has many merits such as high welding speed, high static and dynamic weld strength. So the laser welding has been studied to substituted the resistant spot welding. Therefore, in this study, as a pre-evaluation stage for replacing the resistance spot welding with laser in production of automobile parts, the weldability of cold rolled and zinc coated steel sheets is studied and also evaluated the weld strength by the tensile shear test. And the shape of weld bead appearances and micro structure of the weld bead section is also evaluated.

  • High velocity compaction (HVC) is a production technique with capacity to significantly improve the mechanical properties of powder metallurgy (PM) parts. Investigated here are green body data such as density, tensile strength, radial springback, ejection force and surface flatness. Comparisons are performed with conventional compaction using the same pressing conditions. Cylindrical samples of a pre-alloyed water atomized iron powder are used in this experimental investigation. The HVC process in this study resulted in a better compressibility curve and lower ejection force compared to conventional quasi static pressing. Vertical scanning interferometry measurements show that the HVC process gives flatter sample surfaces.

  • Many researches have published numerous papers about the high-strain-rate obtained from Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) tests. And 6.5wt%Si steel is widely known as an excellent magnetic material because its magnetostriction is nearly zero. Single crystals are prepared by the Floating Zone(FZ) method, which melts the alloy by the use of a high temperature electron beam in a pure argon gas condition. In this paper, the fracture behavior of the poly crystals and single crystals (DO$_3$phase) of Fe-6.5wt%Si alloy by SHPB test is observed. The comparison of high-strain-rate results with static results was done. Obtained main results are as follows: (1) Fe-6.5wt%Si alloy has higher strength at high-strain-rate tensile. SHPB results of polycrystal are twice as high as static results. (2) From the fractography, the cleavage steps are remarkably reduced in the SHPB test compared with the static test.

  • Deep and narrow welds can be produced by laser welding at high welding speeds with a narrow heat-affected zone (HAZ) and little distortion of the workpiece. This study aims to evaluate the usefulness of laser welding at automobile component manufacture. Microstructure observation, hardness test, tensile test and fatigue life test are performed by using the fiber laser welded SPFC590 steel sheets which is used widely in the manufacture of automotive seat frame. Three kinds of specimens are only a SPFC590 steel plate, quasi-butt joint plate and lap joint plate by laser welding. The following results that will be helpful to understand the static strength, fatigue crack initiation and growth mechanism were obtained. (1) The tensile strength of quasi butt joint specimens nearly equal to base metal specimens, but lap joint specimens fractured in shear area of weld metal. (2) The fatigue strength of quasi-butt joint specimen was approximately 8 percent lower than that of the base metal specimens. Furthermore, the lap joint specimens were less than 86 percent of the base metal specimens. (3) The lap joint fatigue specimens fractured at shear area in high level stress amplitude, while fractured at normal area in low level stress amplitude. From these results, the applicability of the laser welding to the automobile component is discussed.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the engineering properties of permeable polymer concrete with fillers and unsaturated polyester resin. The following conclusions were drawn. 1. The highest strength was achieved by stone dust filled permeable polymer concrete, it was increased 17% by compressive, 148% by tensile and 188% by bending strength than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively. 2. The static modulus of elasticity was in the range of $1.17{\times}10^5{\sim}1.32{\times}10^5kg/cm^2$, which was approximately 53~56% of that of the normal cement concrete. Stone dust filled permeable polymer concrete was showed relatively higher elastic modulus. The poisson's number of permeable polymer concrete was less than that of the normal cement concrete. 3. The dynamic modulus of elasticity was in the range of $1.3{\times}10^5{\sim}1.5{\times}10^5kg/cm^2$, which was approximately less compared to that of the normal cement concrete. Stone dust filled permeable polymer concrete was showed higher dynamic modulus. The dynamic modulus of elasticity were increased approximately 10~13% than that of the static modulus. 4. The water permeability was in the range of $3.076{\sim}4.390{\ell}/cm^2/h$, and it was largely dependent upon the mix design. These concrete can be used to the structures which need water permeability. 5. The compressive strength, tensile strength, bending strength and elastic modulus were largely showed with the decrease of water permeability.
