The failure mechanism and maximum collapse load of masonry structures may change significantly under static and dynamic excitations depending on their internal arrangement and material properties. Hence, it is important to understand correctly the nonlinear behavior of masonry structures in order to adequately assess their safety and propose efficient strengthening measures, especially for historical constructions. The discrete element method (DEM) can play an important role in these studies. This paper discusses possible collapse mechanisms and provides a set of parametric analyses by considering the influence of material properties and cross section morphologies on the out of plane strength of masonry walls. Detailed modeling of masonry structures may affect their mechanical strength and displacement capacity. In particular, the structural behavior of stacked and rubble masonry walls, portal frames, simple combinations of masonry piers and arches, and a real structure is discussed using DEM. It is further demonstrated that this structural analysis tool allows obtaining excellent results in the description of the nonlinear behavior of masonry structures.
The motivations of the application of shakedown analysis to the earthquake-resistant design of ductile moment-resisting steel structures are presented. The problems which must be solved with this application are also addressed. The illustrative results from a series of static and time history nonlinear analyses of one-bay three-story steel frame and the related discussions have shown that the incremental collapse may be the critical design criterion in case of earthquake loading. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the inelastic excursion mechanism for alternation load pattern, such as in earthquake, should be the sidesway mechanism of the whole structure for the efficient mobilization of the structural energy dissipating capacity and that the shakedown analysis technique can be used as a tool to ensure this mechanism.

We consider the problem of assigning tasks to homogeneous nodes in the distributed system, so as to minimize the amount of communication, while balancing the processors' loads. This issue can be posed as the graph partitioning problem. Given an undirected graph G=(nodes, edges), where nodes represent task modules and edges represent communication, the goal is to divide n, the number of processors, as to balance the processors' loads, while minimizing the capacity of edges cut. Since these two optimization criteria conflict each other, one has to make a compromise between them according to the given task type. We propose a new cost function to evaluate static task assignments and a heuristic algorithm to solve the transformed problem, explicitly describing the tradeoff between the two goals. Simulation results show that our approach outperforms an existing representative approach for a variety of task and processing systems.
An analysis for turbulent hybrid beatings with fluid inertia and swirl injection effect was derived for studying static characteristics of swirl-controlled hybrid journal. The swirl-controlled hybrid journal beating is considered to have more freedom in stability control in high speed rotating machinery. Current analysis is compared with experimental results with 3-recess hydrostatic journal bearing. The analysis revealed that the fluid momentum exchange at orifice discharge could produce pressure rise inside the recess region which can control the shear flow induced by journal rotation. The analysis also shows that the swirl-controlled hybrid journal beating has a capability of controlling load carrying capacity and stability by manipulating supply pressure and injection angle.

During past earthquakes several bridges have failed due to a loss of support at their bearings, seats, and/or expansion joints. Most efforts to prevent this have been directed toward tying bridges together at their bearings and expansion joints. Longitudinal restrainers are installed to limit the relative displacement at joints and thus decrease the chance of a loss of support as these locations. Transverse restrainers are necessary in many cases to keep the superstructure from sliding off in the transverse direction. Vertical restrainers are used at bearings to prevent uplifting deck, but usually not economically justified unless additional bearing retrofit is being performed. To obtain this three function of restrainer, a universal restrainer is developed. The load capacities were evaluated in static and dynamic experimental test. The test results show that the measured capacity or strength of the bridge deck restrainer is similar to that of design value.

Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) can greatly reinforce power systems through improvement of power transmission capacity and utilization of equipment under the circumstance of continuous load growth and deregulation SVC and STATCOM are shunt FACT devices that have similar static characteristics with Mwhuical Swikhed Capacitor (MSC). The main issue of this paper is the analysis of different dynamic characteristics when STATCOM is solely adopted and when STATCOM is adopted with combination of other reactive power compensator such as SVC and M5C. Furthermore, better application of reactive power compensators can be clarified through analysis of dynamic characteristics of various combinations of reactive power compensators.

Hydrostatic Bearings have been applied to ultra high precision machine tools and precision instruments, because of their low friction characteristic, high load carrying capacity and high moving accuracy at all range of speed. In regard to realizing the Hydrostatic Bearing, various restrictors such as capillary, orifice, diaphram valve, spool valve, and etc can be used. However, their stiffness and flexibility are not sufficient in practical use for ultra precision machine tool elements. In this study dynamic equations were derived and the dynamic characteristics were simulated for both orifice and flow control servo valve. Simulation was carried out on the condition that static and sinusoidal dynamic loads were applied to the table of CNC jig Boring machine. The simulation results indicate the improvement of the performance of the Bearing system when flow control servo valve has been used as restrictor of Hydrostatic Bearing.
Truss type structures are attractive to a variety of engineering applications on earth as well as in space due to their high stiffness to mass ratios and ease of construction and fabrication. During the service life, an individual member of a truss structure may lose load carrying capacity due to many reasons, which may lead to collapse of the structure. An analytical and computational procedure has been developed to study the response of truss structures subject to member failure under static and dynamic loadings. Emphasis is given to the dynamic effects of member failure and the propagation of local damage to other parts of the structure. The methodology developed is based on nonlinear finite element analysis technique and considers elasto-plastic material nonlinearity, postbuckling of members, and large deformation geometric nonlinearity. The pseudo force approach is used to represent the member failure. Results obtained for a planar nine-bay indeterminate truss undergoing sequential member failure show that failure of one member can initiate failure of several members in the structure.

It has been known that lap splicing in the longitudinal reinforcement of bridge columns is not desirable for seismic performance, but it is sometimes unavoidable. Lap splices were usually be located in the plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification on 1992. This research is to evacuate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region, and to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with glassfiber sheets and to develop appropriate limited ductility design concept in low or moderate seismicity region. Nine test specimens in the aspect ratio of 4.0 were made with three confinement ratios and three types of lap splicing. Quasi-static tests under three different axial load levees were conducted. It has been observed that displacement ductility ratios of test columns with lap splicing were significantly reduced.

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets are the most efficient structural materials in terms of strength to weight ratio and its application in strengthening and retrofitting of a structure or structural elements are inevitable. The performance enhancement of structural elements without increasing the cross sectional area and flexible nature are the major advantages of FRP in retrofitting/strengthening work. This research article presents a detailed study on the inelastic response of conventional and retrofitted Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) subjected to quasi-static loading. The hysteretic behaviour, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation and damage index are the parameters employed to analyse the efficacy of FRP strengthening of brick in-filled RC frames. Repair and retrofitting of brick infilled RC frame shows an improved load carrying and damage tolerance capacity than control frame.
