Development of Fingertip Tactile Sensor for Detecting Normal Force and Slip

  • In this paper, we present the finger tip tactile sensor which can detect contact normal force as well as slip. The developed sensor is made of two different materials, such as polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) that is known as piezoelectric polymer and pressure variable resistor ink. In order to detect slip to surface of object, a PVDF strip is arranged along the normal direction in the robot finger tip and the thumb tip. The surface electrode of the PVDF strip is fabricated using silk-screening technique with silver paste. Also a thin flexible force sensor is fabricated in the form of a matrix using pressure variable resistor ink in order to sense the static force. The developed tactile sensor is physically flexible and it can be deformed three-dimensionally to any shape so that it can be placed on anywhere on the curved surface. In addition, we developed a tactile sensing system by miniaturizing the charge amplifier, in order to amplify the small signal from the sensor, and the fast signal processing unit. The sensor system is evaluated experimentally and its effectiveness is validated.

중소기업을 위한 제품정보관리 시스템과 웹기반 CAE 지원 시스템의 연동 (Connection of PDM System and Web-Based CAE Supporting System for Small and Medium Enterprises)

  • A web-based Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) supporting system is connected with a Product Data Management (PDM) system for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) suffering from the lack of building hardware, software and related experts. An analysis of current business models and worksite requirements provides an improved process model and data to be shared between the PDM system and the CAE supporting system. Since all engineering tasks such as geometric modeling, mesh generation, static stress and modal analysis, and fatigue durability analysis are automated in the CAE supporting system, the user in charge of the CAE have only to configure the concerned values of design variables and result data through the web page. The existing Change Management module of the PDM system is modified for seamless data exchange, i.e. sending the Engineering Change Order (ECO) data to the CAE supporting system and receiving the CAE result data bark. The hi-directional data transfers between the PDM system and the CAE supporting system is made possible by adaptors bused on the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP). The current approach will be very helpful for SMEs that only have the PDM system and have no adequate infrastructure for CAE.

  • For the design of welded bogie frame, the concept of multidisciplinary engineering activities, i.e. static, fatigue and dynamic analysis, has been applied, in which the sharing of design parameters related with each analysis and the collaboration of the working parts in charge should be fulfilled. However, in spite of these necessities, the multi-disciplinary engineering activities couldn't be performed in practice due to tack of the automation of the required analysis. In this paper, an automation of fatigue durability analysis of welded bogie frame according to UIC-Code was proposed by using the Model Center, which enables to integrate the several tools for the fatigue durability analysis, i.e. I-DEAS, ANSYS and BFAP, and to perform iterative analysis works in relation to the geometrical change of transom support bracket. Besides, the wrapping programs to control I/O-data and interfaces of these tools were developed. The developed automation technique brings not only significant decreasing man-hour required in the durability analysis, but also providing a platform of the multidisciplinary engineering activities.

견 세리신을 이용한 폴리에스텔의 기능성 향상 (The Functional Effects of Polyester treated with silk sericin)

  • 실용성은 우수하나 위생성과 고급성이 매우 떨어지는 PET직물을 세리신을 이용하여 표면 개질함으로서 새로운 기능성을 부여하고자 하였다. Glutaraldehyde를 사용하여 세리신을 PET 직물에 가교시킬 경우 약 0.22%의 부착율을 보였으며, GA 수용액의 pH는 산으로 갈수록 좋고 세리신 수용액의 pH는 등전점에서 멀어질수록 반응이 쉽고 균일하게 일어났다. PDC 방법으로 세리신을 PET 직물의 부착시킬 경우 0.6%의 부착율을 보였는데 이는 가교제에 의한 경우보다 많이 부착이 되지만 직물에 균일하게 부착되지 않았다. 가교제 또는 PDC 방법을 통하여 PET 직물의 표면을 세리신으로 처리해도 수분율에 큰 영향을 주지 않았다. 즉 감량가공처리만으로도 흡수율이 크게 증가하였으며 이후 세리신을 처리하더라도 흡수율은 향상되지 않았으나 마찰대전성은 크게 향상되었다.

압전기법을 이용한 복합재료 손상모니터링의 가능성에 관한 연구 (Feasibility Study of the Damage Monitoring for Composite Materials by the Piezoelectric Method)

  • Since crack detection for laminated composites in-service is effective to improve the structural reliability of laminated composites, it have been tried to detect cracks of laminated composites by various nondestructive methods. An electric potential method is one of the widely used approaches for detection of cracks for carbon fiber composites, since the electric potential method adopts the electric conductive carbon fibers as reinforcements and sensors and the adoption of carbon fibers as sensors does not bring strength reduction induced by embedding sensors into the structures such as optical fibers. However, the application of the electric method is limited only to electrically conductive composite materials. Recently, a piezoelectric method using piezoelectric characteristics of epoxy adhesives has been successfully developed for the adhesive joints because it can monitor continuously the damage of adhesively bonded structures without producing any defects. Polymeric materials for the matrix of composite materials have piezoelectric characteristics similarly to adhesive materials, and the fracture of composite materials should lead to the fracture of polymeric matrix. Therefore, it seems to be valid that the piezoelectric method can be applied to monitoring the damage of composite materials. In this research, therefore, the feasibility study of the damage monitoring for composite materials by piezoelectric method was conducted. Using carbon fiber epoxy composite and glass fiber composite, charge output signals were measured and analyzed during the static and fatigue tests, and the effect of fiber materials on the damage monitoring of composite materials by the piezoelectric method was investigated.

FUEL ECONOMY IMPROVEMENT FOR FUEL CELL HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES USING FUZZY LOGIC-BASED POWER DISTRIBUTION CONTROL

  • This paper presents a new type of fuzzy logic-based power control strategy for fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles designed to improve their fuel economy while maintaining the battery's state of charge. Since fuel cell systems have inherent limitations, such as a slow response time and low fuel efficiency, especially in the low power region, a battery system is typically used to assist them. To maximize the advantages of this hybrid type of configuration, a power distribution control strategy is required for the two power sources: the fuel cell system and the battery system. The required fuel cell power is procured using fuzzy rules based on the vehicle driving status and the battery status. In order to show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed power control strategy, simulations are performed using a mid-size vehicle for three types of standard drive cycle. First, the fuzzy logic-based power control strategy is shown to improves the fuel economy compared with the static power control strategy. Second, the robustness of the proposed power control strategy is verified against several variations in system parameters.

  • Due to the charge compensation effect, SOI(Silicon-On-Insulator) LIGBT with dual-epi layer have been found to exhibit both low forward voltage drop and high static breakdown voltage. In this paper, electrical characteristics of the SOI LIGBT with dual-epi structure is presented. Trenched anode structure is employed to obtain uniform current flowlines and shorted anode structure also employed to prevent the fast latch-up. Latching current density of the proposed LIGBT with $T_1=T_2=2.5{\mu}m,\;N_1=7{\times}10^{15}/cm^3,\;N_2=3{\times}10^{15}/cm^3$ is $800A/cm^2$ and breakdown voltage is 125V while latching current density and breakdown voltage of the conventional LIGBT is $700A/cm^2$ and 55V.

  • Recently, eco-friendly electric motorcycles have been considered to replace aging gasoline motorcycles to reduce the amount of suspended fine dust in air. However, existing rechargeable battery-powered electric motorcycles have been found unacceptable by users because of their many limitations, such as long charging time, short travel distance per charge, and low driving speed. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional electric motorcycles, this paper proposes an exchangeable battery-powered electric motorcycle and a new frame shape for housing the exchangeable battery. The proposed frame is similar to that of current electric motorcycles; however, the shape and position of the saddle support, battery, and controller mount section are redesigned. The safety of the presented frame is verified through static and dynamic analyses using ABAQUS. In particular, the dynamic analysis is conducted under the most extreme condition among the various operating situations, thus confirming the robustness of the proposed frame design.

  • Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a material with a wide bandgap (3.26eV), a high critical electric field (~2.3MV/cm), a and a high bulk electron mobility (${\sim}900cm^2/Vs$). These electronic properties allow high breakdown voltage, high frequency, and high temperature operation compared to Silicon devices. Although various SiC DMOSFET structures have been reported so far for optimizing performances. the effect of channel dimension on the switching performance of SiC DMOSFETs has not been extensively examined. In this paper, we report the effect of the interface states ($Q_s$) on the transient characteristics of SiC DMOSFETs. The key design parameters for SiC DMOSFETs have been optimized and a physics-based two-dimensional (2-D) mixed device and circuit simulator by Silvaco Inc. has been used to understand the relationship with the switching characteristics. To investigate transient characteristic of the device, mixed-mode simulation has been performed, where the solution of the basic transport equations for the 2-D device structures is directly embedded into the solution procedure for the circuit equations. The result is a low-loss transient characteristic at low $Q_s$. Based on the simulation results, the DMOSFETs exhibit the turn-on time of 10ns at short channel and 9ns at without the interface charges. By reducing $SiO_2/SiC$ interface charge, power losses and switching time also decreases, primarily due to the lowered channel mobilities. As high density interface states can result in increased carrier trapping, or recombination centers or scattering sites. Therefore, the quality of $SiO_2/SiC$ interfaces is important for both static and transient properties of SiC MOSFET devices.

가드링 구조에서 전류 과밀 현상 억제를 위한 온-칩 정전기 보호 방법 (An On-chip ESD Protection Method for Preventing Current Crowding on a Guard-ring Structure)

  • 본 논문에서는 $0.35{\mu}m$ Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS(BCD)공정으로 설계한 스마트 파워 IC 내의 가드링 코너 영역에서 발생하는 비정상적인 정전기 불량을 관측하고 이를 분석하였다. 칩내에서 래치업(Latch-up)방지를 위한 고전압 소자의 가드링에 연결되어 있는 Vcc단과 Vss 사이에 존재하는 기생 다이오드에서 발생한 과도한 전류 과밀 현상으로 정전기 내성 평가에서 Machine Model(MM)에서는 200V를 만족하지 못하는 불량이 발생하였다. Optical Beam Induced Resistance Charge(OBIRCH)와 Scanning Electronic Microscope(SEM)을 사용하여 불량이 발생한 지점을 확인하였고, 3D T-CAD 시뮬레이션으로 원인을 검증하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과를 통해 Local Oxidation(LOCOS)형태의 Isolation구조에서 과도한 정전기 전류가 흘렀을 때 코너영역의 형태에 따라 문제가 발생하는 것을 검증하였다. 이를 통해 정전기 내성이 개선된 가드링 코너 디자인 방법을 제안하였고 제품에 적용한 결과, MM 정전기 내성 평가에서 200V이상의 결과를 얻었다. 통계적으로 Test chip을 분석한 결과 기존의 결과 대비 20%이상 정전기 내성이 향상된 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 이 결과를 바탕으로 BCD공정을 사용하는 칩 설계 시, 가드링 구조의 정전기 취약 지점을 Design Rule Check(DRC) 툴을 사용하여 자동으로 찾을 수 있는 설계 방법도 제안하였다. 본 연구에서 제안된 자동 검증방법을 사용하여, 동종 제품에 적용한 결과 24개의 에러를 검출하였으며, 수정 완료 제품은 동일한 정전기 불량은 발생하지 않았고 일반적인 정전기 내성 요구수준인 HBM 2000V / MM 200V를 만족하는 결과를 얻었다.
