  • The present contribution is concerned with the static and dynamic stability of a piezo-laminated Bernoulli-Euler beam subjected to an axial compressive force. Recently, an inconsistent derivation of the equations of motions of such a smart structural system has been presented in the literature, where it has been claimed, that an axial piezoelectric actuation can be used to control its stability. The main scope of the present paper is to show that this unfortunately is impossible. We present a consistent theory for composite beams in plane bending. Using an exact description of the kinematics of the beam axis, together with the Bernoulli-Euler assumptions, we obtain a single-layer theory capable of taking into account the effects of piezoelectric actuation and buckling. The assumption of an inextensible beam axis, which is frequently used in the literature, is discussed afterwards. We show that the cited inconsistent beam model is due to inadmissible mixing of the assumptions of an inextensible beam axis and a vanishing axial displacement, leading to the erroneous result that the stability might be enhanced by an axial piezoelectric actuation. Our analytical formulations for simply supported Bernoulli-Euler type beams are verified by means of three-dimensional finite element computations performed with ABAQUS.

  • A necessity of remote control robots or various searching robots etc. that accomplish works given instead of human under long distance and extreme environment such as volcano, universe, deep-sea exploration and nuclear power plant etc. is increasing, and so the development and the research regarding these mobile robots are actively progressing. The wheel mobile robot or the track mobile robot have a sufficient energy efficiency under this en, but also have a lot of limits to accomplish works given which are caused from the restriction of mobile ability. Therefore, recently many researches for the walking robot with superior mobility and energy efficiency on the terrain, which is uneven or where obstacles, inclination and stairways exist, have been doing. The research for these walking robots is separated into fields of mechanism and control system, gait research, circumference environment and system condition recognition etc. greatly. It is a research field that the gait research among these is the centralist in actual implementation of walking robot unlike different mobile robots. A research field for gait of walking robot is classified into two parts according to the nature of the stability and the walking speed, static gait or dynamic gait. While the speed of a static gait is lower than that of a dynamic gait, a static gait which moves the robot to maintain a static stability guarantees a superior stability relatively. A dynamic gait, which make the robot walk controlling the instability caused by the gravity during the two leg supporting period and so maintaining the stability of the robot body spontaneously, is suitable for high speed walking but has a relatively low stability and a difficulty in implementation compared with a static gait. The quadruped walking robot has a strong point that can embody these gaits together. In this research, we will develope an autonomous quadruped robot with an asaptibility to the environment by selectry appropriate gait, element such as duty factor, stride, trajectory, etc.

  • Techniques of tool posts are developing such that variable machining is possible using only one machine for the complication of a product's shape and to reduce the machining time. In order to develop a mill turret with a variable machining function with the mounting of mill turret units on a B-axis tilting table, we determine the static/dynamic stability of the structure of the mill turret. To this end, a static structural analysis and a modal analysis were conducted. From the results of the static structural analysis, the maximum stress was found to be less than the allowable stress. By the comparing the results of the modal analysis of the excitation frequencies of the mill turret, there were no resonance regions found. Therefore, the mill turret with the B-axis tilting facility is shown to have good structural integrity.

  • Voltage instability has been studied for some decade now. But, There is not generally accepted definition of voltage instability because of the complex phenomenon and the variety of ways in which it can manifest itself. Both IEEE and CIGRE have the respective definitions. The areas of voltage instability research are the analysis, simulation and countermeasure of voltage instability. It needs to model the components of the power system to simulate the voltage instability and voltage collapse. At the beginning, the static simulation was used. This method provides the voltage stability indices and it requires less CPU resource and gives much insight into the voltage and power problem. However, it is less accurate than the dynamic simulation peformed in the time domain simulation. So, when it appears difficult to secure the voltage stability margin in a static stability, it is necessary to perform the dynamic simulation. To perform time-domain simulation, we have to model the dynamic component of the power system like a generator and a load. The dynamic simulation provides the accurate result of the voltage instability. But, it is not able to provide the sensitivity information or the degree of stability and it is time consuming and it needs much CPU resource. In this Paper, we perform a dynamic simulation of voltage instability and voltage collapse using EMTP MODELS. The exponential load model is designed with MODEIS and this load model is connected with test power system. The result shows the process of voltage change in time domain when the voltage instability or voltage collapse occurs.

  • This paper describes modeling Voltage Sourced Inverter (VSI) type Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) controllers and control methods for power system dynamic stability studies. The considered FACTS controllers are the Static Compensator (STATCOM), the Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC), and the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). In this paper, these FACTS controllers are derived in the current injection model, and it is applied to the linear and nonlinear analysis algorithm for power system dynamics studies. The parameters of the FACTS controllers are set to damp the inter-area oscillations, and the supplementary damping controllers and its control schemes are proposed to increase damping abilities of the FACTS controllers. For these works, the linear analysis for each FACTS controller with or without damping controller is executed, and the dynamic characteristics of each FACTS controller are analyzed. The results are verified by the nonlinear analysis using the time-domain simulation.

  • The roadways surrounded by rock and coal will lose their stability or even collapse under rock burst. Rock burst mainly involves an evolution of dynamic loading which behaves quite differently from static or quasi-static loading. To compare the dynamic response of coal and rocks with different static strengths, three different rocks and bituminous coal were selected for testing at three different dynamic loadings. It's found that the dynamic compression strength of rocks and bituminous coal is much greater than the static compression strength. The dynamic compression strength and dynamic increase factor of the rocks both increase linearly with the increase of the strain rate, while those of the bituminous coal are irregular due to the characteristics of multi-fracture and heterogeneity. Moreover, the absorbed energy of the rocks and bituminous coal both increase linearly with an increase in the strain rate. And the ratio of absorbed energy to the total energy of bituminous coal is greater than that of rocks. With the increase of dynamic loading, the failure degree of the sample increases, with the increase of the static compressive strength, the damage degree also increases. The static compassion strength of the bituminous coal is lower than that of rocks, so the number of small-scale fragments was the largest after bituminous coal rupture.

  • 2-edge box girder bridges have been widely used in civil engineering practice. However, these bridges show weakness in aerodynamic stability. To overcome this weakness, additional attachments, such as fairing and flap, are usually used. These additional attachments can increase the cost and decrease the constructability. Some previous researchers suggested an aerodynamically stabilized 2-edge box girder section, giving a slope to the edge box instead of installing additional attachments. However, their studies are limited to only dynamic stability, even though static aerodynamic coefficients are as important as dynamic stability. In this study, focus was given to the evaluation of static aerodynamic response for a stabilized 2-edge box girder section. For this, the slopes of the edge box were varied from $0^{\circ}$ to $17^{\circ}$ and static coefficients were obtained through a series of wind tunnel tests. The results were then compared with those from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. From the results, it was found that the drag coefficients generally decreased with the increasing box slope angle, except for the specific box slope range. This range of box slope varied depending on the B/H ratio, and this should be avoided for the practical design of such a bridge, since it results in poor static aerodynamic response.

  • An important issue in the design of soil-nailing systems, as long-term retaining walls, is to assess their stability during seismic events. As such, this study is aimed at simulating the dynamic behavior and failure pattern of nailed structures using two series of numerical analyses, namely dynamic time history and pseudo-static. These numerical simulations are performed using the Finite Difference Method (FDM). In order to consider the actual response of a soil-nailed structure, nonlinear soil behaviour, soil-structure interaction effects, bending resistance of structural elements and construction sequences have been considered in the analyses. The obtained results revealed the efficiency of both analysis methods in simulating the seismic failure mechanism. The predicted failure pattern consists of two sliding blocks enclosed by three slip surfaces, whereby the bottom nails act as anchors and the other nails hold a semi-rigid soil mass. Moreover, it was realized that an increase in the length of the lowest nails is the most effective method to improve seismic stability of soil-nailed structures. Therefore, it is recommended to first estimate the nails pattern for static condition with the minimum required static safety factor. Then, the required seismic stability can be obtained through an increase in the length of the lowest nails. Moreover, placement of additional long nails among lowest nails in existing nailed structures can be considered as a simple retrofitting technique in seismic prone areas.
