A bogie is the device that connects a car body and wheel sets of a rail vehicle. It is the critical component that determine:; the running safety, The bogie consists of a frame, suspensions, brakes and wheel sets. Various analyses including a numerical simulation using a finite element method, a static load test, a fatigue test, ai)d r running test should be carried out to design the bogie. However cracks have been found at some end beams of the bogies mounted on the freight cars running with the high speed. The cracks of the end beam results in deterioration of the brake performance an the running safety, A new design has been suggested to solve this problem by ROTEM company and it's performance has been tested in this paper. Numerical simulations and dynamic tests are carried out to figure out the causes of cracks in the conventional bogie, and the vibrational characteristics of the improved bogie are compared with those of the conventional one.
A modified Pagano method is developed for the three-dimensional (3D) free vibration analysis of simply-supported, multilayered functionally graded material (FGM) circular hollow cylinders with a constant rotational speed with respect to the meridional direction of the cylinders. The material properties of each FGM layer constituting the cylinders are regarded as heterogeneous through the thickness coordinate, and then specified to obey a power-law distribution of the volume fractions of the constituents, and the effects of centrifugal and Coriolis accelerations, as well as the initial hoop stress due to rotation, are considered. The Pagano method, which was developed for the static and dynamic analyses of multilayered composite plates, is modified in that a displacement-based formulation is replaced by a mixed formulation, the complex-valued solutions of the system equations are transferred to the real-valued solutions, a successive approximation method is adopted to extend its application to FGM cylinders, and a propagator matrix method is developed to reduce the time needed for its implementation. These modifications make the Pagano method feasible for multilayered FGM cylinders, and the computation in the implementation is independent of the total number of the layers, thus becoming less time-consuming than usual.

In 2017 Pohang Earthquake, a number of residential buildings with pilotis at their first level were severely damaged. In this study, the results of an analytical investigation on the seismic performance and structural damage of two bearing wall buildings with pilotis are presented. The vibration mode and lateral force-resisting mechanism of the buildings with vertical and plan irregularity were investigated through elastic analysis. Then, based on the investigations, methods of nonlinear modeling for walls and columns at the piloti level were proposed. By performing nonlinear static and dynamic analyses, structural damages of the walls and columns at the piloti level under 2017 Pohang Earthquake were predicted. The results show that the area and arrangement of walls in the piloti level significantly affected the seismic safety of the buildings. Initially, the lateral resistance of the piloti story was dominated mainly by the walls resisting in-plane shear. After shear cracking and yielding of the walls, the columns showing double-curvature flexural behavior contributed significantly to the residual strength and ductility.

In this study, the results of an analytical investigation on the seismic behavior of two residential 4-story bearing wall buildings with pilotis, each of which has symmetric or unsymmetric wall arrangement at their piloti level, are presented. The dynamic characteristics and lateral resistance of the piloti buildings were investigated through linear elastic and nonlinear static analyses. According to the results, the analytical natural period of vibration of the piloti buildings were significantly shorter than the fundamental period calculated in accordance with KBC 2016. In the initial elastic behavior, the walls resisting in-plane shear contributed to the lateral stiffness and strength, while the contribution of columns resisting flexural moments in double curvature was limited. However, after the shear cracking and yielding of the walls occurred, the columns significantly contributed to the residual strength and ductility. Based on those investigations, design recommendations of low-rise bearing wall buildings with piloti configuration are given.
This article presents strain gradient elasticity-based procedures for static bending, free vibration and buckling analyses of functionally graded rectangular micro-plates. The developed method allows consideration of smooth spatial variations of length scale parameters of strain gradient elasticity. Governing partial differential equations and boundary conditions are derived by following the variational approach and applying Hamilton's principle. Displacement field is expressed in a unified way to produce numerical results in accordance with Kirchhoff, Mindlin, and third order shear deformation theories. All material properties, including the length scale parameters, are assumed to be functions of the plate thickness coordinate in the derivations. Developed equations are solved numerically by means of differential quadrature method. Proposed procedures are verified through comparisons made to the results available in the literature for certain limiting cases. Further numerical results are provided to illustrate the effects of material and geometric parameters on bending, free vibrations, and buckling. The results generated by Kirchhoff and third order shear deformation theories are in very good agreement, whereas Mindlin plate theory slightly overestimates static deflection and underestimates natural frequency. A rise in the length scale parameter ratio, which identifies the degree of spatial variations, leads to a drop in dimensionless maximum deflection, and increases in dimensionless vibration frequency and buckling load. Size effect is shown to play a more significant role as the plate thickness becomes smaller compared to the length scale parameter. Numerical results indicate that consideration of length scale parameter variation is required for accurate modelling of graded rectangular micro-plates.

In this paper, foam-composite sandwich structures for EDM machine tool components such as column and column block designed by controlling stacking sequences and cross-sectional dimensions of the composite structures. The original column block is a box-shaped structure made of aluminum connecting a column and a Z-stage of the system. This research was focused on the design of efficient column block structure using a foam-composite sandwich structure which have good bending stiffness and damping characteristics to reduce the mass and increase damping ratio of the system. Vibration tests for getting damping ratio with respect to the stacking angle and thickness of the composites were carried out. Finite element analyses for static defection and vibration behaviour were also carried out to find out the appropriate stacking conditions; that is, stacking sequence and rib configuration. From the test and analysis results it was found that composite-foam sandwich structures for the microfactory system can be successful alternatives for high precision machining.
This article focuses on the static and dynamic analysis and optimization of an anisogrid lattice plate subjected to axial compressive load with simply supported boundary conditions. The lattice plate includes diagonal and transverse ribs and is modeled as an orthotropic plate with effective stiffness properties. The study employs the first-order shear deformation theory and the Ritz method with a Legendre approximation function. In the realm of optimization, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II is utilized as an evolutionary multi-objective algorithm to optimize. The research findings are validated through finite element analysis. Notably, this study addresses the less-explored areas of optimizing the geometric parameters of the plate by maximizing the buckling load and natural frequency while minimizing mass. Furthermore, this study attempts to fill the gap related to the analysis of the post-buckling behavior of lattice plates, which has been conspicuously overlooked in previous research. This has been accomplished by conducting nonlinear analyses and scrutinizing post-buckling diagrams of this type of lattice structure. The efficacy of the continuous methods for analyzing the natural frequency, buckling, and post-buckling of these lattice plates demonstrates that while a degree of accuracy is compromised, it provides a significant amount of computational efficiency.

A deployable missile control fin has some structural nonlinearities because of the worn or loose hinges and the manufacturing tolerance. The structural nonlinearity cannot be eliminated completely, and exerts significant effects on the static and dynamic characteristics of the control fin. Thus, It is important to establish the accurate deployable missile control fin model. In the present study, the nonlinear dynamic model of 4he deployable missile control fin is developed using a substructure synthesis method. The deployable missile control fin can be subdivided Into two substructures represented by linear dynamic models and a nonlinear hinge with structural nonlinearities. The nonlinear hinge model is established by using a system identification method, and the substructure modes are improved using the Frequency Response Method. A substructure synthesis method Is expanded to couple the substructure models and the nonlinear hinge model, and the nonlinear dynamic model of the fin is developed. Finally, the established nonlinear dynamic model of the deployable missile control fin is verified by dynamic tests. The established model is In good agreement with test results, showing that the present approach is useful in aeroelastic stability analyses such as time-domain nonlinear flutter analysis.

In this paper, a simple improved 8-node finite element for the finite element analysis of fibrous composite plates is presented by using the direct modification. We drive explicit expressions of shape functions for the 8-node element with bilinear element geometry, which is modified so that it can represent any quadratic fields in Cartesian coordinates. The refined first-order shear deformation theory is proposed, which results in parabolic through-thickness distribution of the transverse shear strains and stresses from the formulation based on the third-order shear deformation theory. It eliminates the need for shear correction factors in the first-order theory. This finite element is further improved by combined use of assumed strain, modified shape function, and refined first-order theory. To show the effectiveness of our simple modification on the 8-node finite elements, numerical studies are carried out the static, buckling and free vibration analysis of fibrous composite plates.
Detailed finite element (FE) analyses of a full-scale four-story steel frame structure, subjected to consecutive 60% and 100% excitations from the JR Takatori records during the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake, are conducted using E-Simulator. The four-story frame was tested at the largest shake-table facility in the world, E-Defense, in 2007. E-Simulator is a parallel FE analysis software package developed to accurately simulate structural behavior up to collapse by using a fine mesh of solid elements. To reduce computational time in consecutive dynamic time history analyses, static analysis with gravity force is introduced to terminate the vibration of the structure during the analysis of 60% excitation. An overall sway mechanism when subjected to 60% excitation and a story mechanism resulting from local buckling of the first-story columns when subjected to 100% excitation are simulated by using E-Simulator. The story drift response to the consecutive 60% and 100% excitations is slightly smaller than that for the single 100% excitation.
