  • An AC electrical railroad system has rapidly changing dynamic single-phase load, and at a feeding substation, three-phase electric power is transformed to the paired directional single-phase electric power. There is a great difference in electrical phenomenon between the load of AC electrical railroad system and that of general power system. Electric characteristics of AC electrical railroad's trainload are changed continuously according to the traction, operating characteristic, operating schedule, track slope, etc. Because of the long feeding distance of the dynamic trainload, power quality problems such as voltage drop, voltage imbalance and harmonic distortion may also occur to AC electrical railroad system. These problems affect not only power system stability. but also power quality deterioration in AC electrical railroad system. The dynamic simulation model of AC electrical railroad system presented by PSCAD/EMTDC is modeled in this paper, and then, it is analyzed voltage drop and power quality for AC electrical railroad system both with single-Phase distributed STATCOM(Static Synchronous Compensator) installed at SP(Sectioning Post) and without.

  • The complexity and severe nonlinearity of multi-machine power systems make it difficult to design a control input for voltage regulation using modern control theory. This paper presents a model-based PID control scheme for the regulation of the bus voltage to a desired value. To this end, a fourth-order linear system is constructed using input and output data obtained using the TSAT (Transient Security Assessment Tool); the input is assumed to be applied to the grid through the STATCOM (STATic synchronous COMpensator) and the output from the grid is a bus voltage. On the basis of the model, it is identified as to which open-loop poles of the system make the response to a step input oscillatory. To reduce this oscillatory response effectively, a model-based PID control is designed in such a way that the oscillatory poles are no longer problematic in the closed loop. Simulation results show that the proposed PID control dampens the response effectively.

  • This paper presents a control method of the modular multilevel converter - high-voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) system to regulate grid voltage on the basis of the Jeju Island power system. In this case, the MMC-HVDC system is controlled as a static synchronous compensator (Statcom) to exchange the reactive power with the power grid. The operation of the MMC-HVDC system is verified by using the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation program. The Jeju Island power system is first established on the basis of the parameters and measured data from the real Jeju Island power system. This power system consists of two line-commutated converter - high-voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) systems, two Statcom systems, wind farms, thermal power plants, transformers, and transmission and distribution lines. The proposed control method is then applied by replacing one LCC-HVDC system with a MMC-HVDC system. Simulation results with and without using the MMC-HVDC system are compared to evaluate the effectiveness of the control method.

  • This paper describes the development of KEPCO's 80MVA UPFC electromagnetic transient model and the analysis of its performance in the actual Korean power system. KEPCO's 80MVA UPFC is currently undergoing installation and will be ready for commercial operation from the year 2003. In order to apply a new FACTS device such as the UPFC to the actual power system, the utility needs, in advance, both load flow stability studies and transient studies. Therefore, KEPRI, the research institute of KEPCO, developed a detailed transient analysis model that is based on the actual UPFC S/W algorithm and H/W specifications. This simulation model is implemented by an EMTDC/PSCAD package. The results of the simulation show the effectiveness of UPFC operation in the KEPCO power system.

  • This paper proposes a SSSC based on 3-level half-bridge inverters. The dynamic characteristic of the proposed SSSC was analyzed by EMTP simulation and a scaled hardware model, assuming that the SSSC is inserted in the transmission line of the one-machine-infinite-but power system. The proposed SSC has six 3-level half-bridge inverters per phase, which operates in PWM mode. The proposed SSSC generates a quasi-sinusoidal output voltage by 90 degree phase shift to the line current. The proposed SSSC does not require the coupling transformer for voltage injection, and has a flexibility in operation voltage by increasing the number of series connection.

  • This Paper Proposes the FACTS site selection method using subtransmission system reduction. A general method which uses the sensitivity of the variation in voltage and reactive Power has been used to determine the location of shunt type FACTS device, but there is a difficulty to find a proper location due to the overestimation of the effect of sub-transmission systems. Therefore, there is a need to reduce sub-transmission system for finding an effective location of shunt type FACTS devices such as SVC(Static Var Compensator), STATCOM(Static Synchronous Compesator), and so on.

  • This paper presents the dynamic excitation control of a siphon-turbine coupled pico-hydro powered cage rotor induction generator and load matching for off-grid electricity generation. Through the proposed dual-role of the current-controlled voltage source converter (VSC), acting as static synchronous compensator and load controller, real and reactive power are dynamically controlled in a decoupled manner with a self supported DC-bus. The proposed scheme entails minimal computation for ensuring the rated (set) capacity of real power. The scheme also exhibits fault immunity for protection, thus enabling the effective handling of constant power electrical loads presented by base telecom station towers in remote locations. The performance of the system is evaluated under MATLAB/Simulink and is experimented through a developed hardware prototype. Simulation and experimental results show close conformity and validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
