This paper aims at enlightening the properties, computational and implementation issues related to Kalman filter based state estimation algorithms and sliding mode observers, by applying them for estimating the states of a smart structure system. The Kalman based estimators considered in this work are Kalman filter and information filter and, the sliding mode observers considered are Utkin observer and higher order sliding mode observer. A fourth order linear time invariant model of a piezo actuated beam is used in this work. This structure is embedded with four number of piezo patches, of which two act as sensors, one as disturbance actuator and the other as control actuator. The performance of the state estimation algorithms is evaluated through simulation, for the first two vibrating modes of the piezo actuated structure, when the structure is maintained at first mode and second mode resonance.
The optimal control of xenon concentration in a nuclear reactor is posed as a linear quadratic regulator problem with state feedback control. Since it is not possible to measure the state variables such as xenon and iodine concentrations directly, implementation of the optimal state feedback control law requires estimation of the unmeasurable state variables. The estimation method used is based on the Luenberger observer. The set of the reactor kinetics equations is a stiff system. This singularly perturbed system arises from the interaction of slow dynamic modes (iodine and xenon concentrations) and fast dynamic modes (neutron flux, fuel and coolant temperatures). The singular perturbation technique is used to overcome this stiffness problem. The observer-based controller of the original system is effected by separate design of the observer and controller of the reduced subsystem and the fast subsystem. In particular, since in the reactor kinetics control problem analyzed in the study the fast mode dies out quickly, we need only design the observer for the reduced slow subsystem. The results of the test problems demonstrated that the state feedback control of the xenon oscillation can be accomplished efficiently and without sacrificing accuracy by using the observer combined with the singular perturbation method.

This study focuses on the state space model and the design of a state observer for the slip dynamics between rolls in STS cold cluster mills. First, a mathematical model of the roll slip is given as a nonlinear differential equation. Then, by using a Taylor series expansion, it is linearized as a state space model. Next, by using Gopinath's algorithm, a minimal-order state observer based on the state space model is designed to estimate the angular speed of all idle rolls except for an actuated roll that is measureable. Finally, a computer simulation is used to validate that the proposed state space model very well describes slip dynamics between, and moreover, the state observer very well estimates the angular speed of the idle roll.

This paper presents a state observer design for a class of MTMO nonlinear systems that has a block triangular structure. For this, the extension of the existing design for SISO triangular systems to MIMO cases is provided. Since the gain of the proposed observer. depends on a nonlinear part as well as a linear one of a system, it improves the transient performance of the high gain ob-server. Also, by using a generalized similarity transformation for the error dynamics, it is shown that order some boundedness condi-tion, the proposed observer guarantees the global exponential convergence of the estimation error. Finally, we will give a simulation example to show the validity of our design methodology.

Time delay observer (TDO), thanks to the time delay control (TDC) concept, requires little knowledge of a plant model, and hence is easy to design, robust to parameter variation and computationally efficient, yet can reconstruct states rather reliable for nonlinear plant. In this paper, we propose an improved version of TDO that solves two problems inherent in TDO as follows: TDO displays large reconstruction errors due to low-frequency uncertainty and has some restrictions on selecting its gains. By introducing a low pass filter and a state associated with it, we obtain an enhanced time delay observer (ETDO). This observer turns out to have smaller reconstruction errors than those of TDO and not to have any restriction on selecting its gains, thereby solving the problems. Through performance comparison by transfer function and simulation, we validate the analysis results of two observers (TDO and ETDO) and evaluate the performances. Finally, through experiments on BLDC motor system, the analysis results are clearly conformed.
This paper describes a nonlinear state observer to identify the rotor position and velocity of a hybrid-type linear pulse motor(LPM). Since the observer's error dynamics of a hybrid-type LPM is highly nonlinear, the stability of the proposed observer is analyzed using an approximated error model. The optimal choices of the proposed observer gains are also discussed. Our extensive simulation study shows that the proposed observer can identify rotor position and velocity and is robust with respect to uncertainties in mechanical parameters and load force.

Existing adaptive observers may cause the parameter drifts due to disturbances even if state estimation errors remain small. To avoid the drift phenomena in the presence of bounded disturbances, several robust adaptive observers have been introduced addressing bounds in state and parameter estimates. However, it is not easy for these observers to manipulate the size of the bounds with the selection of the observer gain. In order to reduce estimation errors, this paper introduces the (equation omitted) gain minimization problem in the adaptive observer structure, which minimizes the (equation omitted) gain between disturbances and estimation errors. The stability condition of the adaptive observer is reformulated as a linear matrix inequality, and the observer gain is optimally chosen by solving the convex optimization problem. The estimation performance is demonstrated through a numerical example.

This paper deals with an observer-based preview control for semi-active suspensions. An Observer has been designed such that all the state variables and road inputs can be estimated from accelerations. Since the road input to the rear wheels is a delayed version of that to the front wheels, it can be obtained by estimating the road input to the front wheels without preview the estimated values of state and the estimated road input has been investigated. The results show that the observer-based control can provide good performance. The observer-based preview control improves the dynamic behavior of the rear axle and that of pitch motion compared to the LQ optimal control.

This paper presents a sensorless speed control of cylindrical permanent magnet synchronous motors(PMSM) using an adaptive integral binary observer In view of composition with a main loop regulator and an auxiliary loop regulator, the binary observer has a property of the chattering alleviation in the constant boundary layer. However, the steady state estimation accuracy and robustness are dependent upon the width of the constant boundary. In order to improve the steady state performance of the binary observer, the binary observer is formed by adding extra integral dynamics to the switching hyperplane equation. With the help of integral characteristic, the rotor speed can be finely estimated and utilized for a sensorless speed controller for PMSM. Since the Parameters of the dynamic equations such as machine inertia or a viscosity friction coefficient are lot well known, there are many restrictions in the actual implementation. The proposed adaptive integral binary observer applies an adaptive scheme so that observer may overcome the problem caused by using the dynamic equations and the rotor speed is constructed by using the Lyapunov function. The observer structure and its design method are described. The experimental results of the proposed algorithm are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

This paper presents sensorless speed control of a cylindrical permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using the adaptive integral binary observer. In view of the composition with a main loop regulator and an auxiliary loop regulator, the normal binary observer has the feature of chattering alleviation in the constant boundary layer. However, the steady state estimation accuracy and robustness are dependent upon the thickness of the constant boundary layer. In order to improve the steady state performance of the binary observer, a new binary observer is formed by the addition of extra integral dynamics to the existing switching hyperplane equation. Also, because the parameters of the dynamic equations such as machine inertia or viscosity friction coefficient are not well known and these values can be changed during normal operations, there are many restrictions in the actual implementation. The proposed adaptive integral binary observer applies an adaptive scheme so that the observer may overcome the problems caused by using dynamic equations. The rotor speed is constructed by using the Lyapunov function. The observer structure and its design method are described. The experimental results of the proposed algorithm are presented to prove the effectiveness of the approach.
