  • Switched reluctance motors and drives are increasingly used in high speed applications due to their robust mechanical structures, low inertia, and reduction in the rotor losses. The turn-on angle has to be advanced as the motor speed increases, but it may cause the starting problem in some rotor positions. In this paper, the characteristics of the maximum speed and input voltage with the advance angle at high speeds is investigated. To overcome the starting problem and reduce the torque ripple, conduction overlapping is added in adjacent phases. The effectiveness of conduction overlapping is verified through the simulation and experiments.

Fundamental study on sustainable treatment system of mine water using magnetized solid catalyst

  • In the mine exploration sites, sustainable treatment system of mine water with energy saving and minimized chemical additives is required. Since most of the mine water contains highly-concentrated ferrous ion, it is necessary to study on the removal method of iron ions. We propose the system consisting of two processes; precipitation process by air oxidation using solid catalyst-modified magnetite and separation process combining gravitational sedimentation and magnetic separation using a permanent magnet. Firstly, in the precipitation process (a former process of the system), we succeeded to prepare solid catalyst-modified magnetite. Air oxidation using solid catalyst-modified magnetite using $Fe_2(SO_4)_3$ as a starting material showed high iron removal capability. Secondly, in the separation process (latter process of the system), solid catalyst-modified magnetite using $Fe_2(SO_4)_3$ as a starting material can be separated by a superconducting bulk magnet and a permanent magnet.

  • DC transit system has been adopted in the metropolitan area, Korea since 1974. EMU in this system always reiterates that acceleration and retardation. When EMU decelerates using electric breaking, regenerative power occurs. Regenerative power can be consumed in vicinity EMU on the same line or in resistor. If DC transit system has inverter for reusing regenerative power, Energy efficiency in DC transit system will be increased. This paper present a scheme to set up the starting voltage for the developed inverter and its field test result.

  • Gas turbine systems are applied extensively in energy supplies to cover peak load requirements. The gas turboset must be accelerated by starting device up to 60%~80% of rated speed to ignite the gas turbine. Recently, the most favorable and economical starting device is the LCI(Load Commutated Inverter). The LCI runs up the gas turboset by feeding the generator as a synchronous motor. In this paper, we discuss in detail the driving principles and features of 183MW gas turbine system. During field application of LCI system, many tests have been conducted and the results were described in this paper. The test results will be considered as the important resources for development in future.

  • A load flow and short circuit fault simulation of AC electrified railway distribution systems is presented with DIgSILENT PowerFactory software. Load flow of electrified railways distribution system with concerning multi train lines and dynamic characteristics of train load is studied for different time laps. The dynamic characteristics of train load in starting and braking conditions with different starting and stopping times and its moving positions makes the load flow complicated so there is a great need in studying the effects of electrified railways on load flow. Short circuit fault transients is also studied and simulated for both power system or traction distribution system and their effects on the operation of the train sets is investigated.

  • A linear generator driven by hydrogen (or other kind of fuel) combustion engine requires special consideration for starting because of its none-conventional way of operation. This study investigates the possibility of replacing mechanical (hydraulic) start-up with electrical motoring. Simulation study based on 1 kW prototype system shows that the mover position of a linear generator can be controlled with a proper current control of power converter.

  • 축소-팽창 디퓨저가 장착된 초음속 이젝터를 제작하여, 다양한 위치에서의 측정된 압력으로 부유동의 초음속 시동조건을 찾아내었다. 우선 부유동 흡입구의 크기의 영향을 알아내기 위하여 다양한 흡입구 직경으로 실험하였으며, 부유동의 초음속 시동은 흡입구 직경과 축소-팽창 디퓨저 직경의 비, d/D가 0.306 미만인 경우에만 일어났다. 이보다 큰 d/D에서는, 아음속 시동이 먼저 시작되고, 흡입구를 막으면서 주유동의 유입이 전 유동장을 채우게 되어 수직 충격파를 축소-팽창 디퓨저의 하류로 내려보내게 된다 이러한 상황에서 다시 흡입구를 열어도 히스테리시스의 영향으로 초음속 시동이 유지된다.

  • In this paper, an auxiliary winding driving system of single-phase induction motors is described. Starting charateristics variations are obtained by controlling the auxiliary winding voltage magnitude and phase angle, while the motor's main winding is directly connected to the local utility. A variable auxiliary winding voltage phase angle is shown to yield significant torque control, providing starting and braking torque. The analysis includes the determination of the relationship between the auxiliary winding voltage phase angle and the phase angle difference between the main and auxiliary winding current. The paper proposed for adjusting an auxiliary winding voltage magnitude and phase angle. Experimental results of motor's starting characteristics with using the DC-AMP and PWM inverter for auxiliary winding power supply are shown. The drive is tested using a dynamometer to experimentally verify the results of the theory.

  • In this paper, intelligent methods using digital protection relay in power SCADA system is developed in order to protect power systems by means of timely fault detection during operation and control at starting for induction motor which have various load environments and capacities in power systems. The digital protective relay was designed with DSP CPU(TMS320C31) to protect and measure more quickly and precisely. The test result on the basis of KEMC 1120 and IEC60255, show that the operation time error of the digital motor protection relay is improved within ${\pm}5%$. Also, we can control motors at starting according to starting types with simple method as programmable sequence editor. So we can improve the demerits of high cost and much manhour for rework.
