  • Speckle Interferometer equipped with an ITT intensified CCD have been used on the NCUO ( National Central University Observatory, Taiwan) 24-inch telescope for studying the orbits of bright binary systems selected from the Yale's Bright Star Catalogue. The high resolution and high sensitivity ITT intensified solid state video camera ( F4577 ) has external gain and gate control functions which will simplify the design of the speckle camera and allow us to do precise speckle photometry. The goal of this project is trying to study the bright binary systems with separations between the average size of seeing disk and the diffraction limit of the 24-inch telescope. Recently some observing data have been reduced and compared with the other teams' results. We are now improving the data reduction technology and trying to use real time observing mode on the monthly routine observation.

  • We collect 24 times of light maxima data from sources in the literature, unpublished data and open databases, and investigate the variations of the observed and calculated (O-C) values for light maxima of V1719 Cyg. We found no evidence of the variations in the (O-C) values. We estimate the effective temperature and surface gravity using both the Kurucz and MARCS/SSG grids for different metallicity values [A/H]=0.0 and +0.5 for V1719 Cyg. It is confirmed that the temperature is almost the same, but, in the case of surface gravity, the MARCS/SSG grid gives the value closest to that obtained from the period-gravity relation derived by using the pulsation-evolution theory. We obtain two spectra of V1719 Cyg from spectroscopic observation which permitted us to find the effective temperature and the surface gravity of the star directly. We estimate the metallicity and it is found that the abundance of iron is equal to the solar value.

  • We have studied the properties of interstellar turbulence as observed by Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (BU-FCRAO) Galactic Ring Survey (GRS). This observation uses 13CO J=$1{\rightarrow}0$ emission with high spectral resolution of 0.21 kms-1 and covers wide galactic plane regions ($18^{\circ}$ < 1 < $55.7^{\circ}$ and -1 < b < $1^{\circ}$). Firstly, we measured the one dimensional power spectrum of 13CO intensity along the galactic longitude and along the galactic latitude. We found the slope of the power spectrum changes around the molecular ring structure and the center of the galactic plane. Secondly, we explored how the power spectral slope is related with the velocity dispersion of supersonic giant molecular clouds in the GRS. Finally, we suggest the turbulent nature of the interstellar medium is connected with star formation activities in spiral arms.

  • We have detected a SiO maser line (v=1, J=2- 1) for 15 stars out of about 80 long period variables in the wide range of period. No new sources are detected; all detected sources are variables with period longer than 300 days; no evidence is found that the dust grains in the outer envelope have influenced on this line. The time variation of this maser line for 7 stars, T Cep, ${\mu} Cep$, U Her, R Leo, R Lmi, U Ori, and R Ser is observed and compared with optical light curve at the same epoch of maser observation. No universial relation between the time variation and the optical light curve is found. It implies that the radiation from a central star does not much play an important role for the direct pumping of the SiO maser line.

  • FU Orionis type object is a category of low mass pre-main sequence star which displays optical outburst caused by accreting material at rapid rates from their surrounding disks in a few months. V1057 Cyg was about 16 mag. In late 1969, however, it rapidly brightened more than 5 mag and classified as a FU Orionis type object. After the outburst the brightness began to weaken monotonously and in 1990's magnitude decreased 13.0 mag. We carried out photometric observations of V1057 Cyg in V R I bands from 2013 November 7 to 20 with the 76 cm Ritchey-Chretien telescope at Kyung Hee Astronomical Observatory (KHAO). These result can display the recent brightness change of V1057Cyg during observation period. We also discuss possibilities of using an on-campus telescope for astronomical research works.

  • The short time scale X-ray variability associated with the accretion disk around compact objects is complex and is vaguely understood. The study of the cross correlation function gives an insight into the energy dependent behavior of the variations and hence connected processes. Using high resolution RXTE data, we investigate the dynamical cross correlation function of an observation of a black hole source XTE J1550-564 in the steep power law state. The cross correlation between soft and hard X- ray energy bands revealed both correlated and anti-correlated delays (${\leq}{\pm}15s$) on a correlation time scale of 50 s. It was noticed that the observed delays were similar to the delays between X-ray and optical/IR bands in other black hole and neutron star sources. We discuss the possible mechanisms/processes to explain the observed delays in the dynamical CCF.

  • Recent observation of the neutron star merger event, GW170817, through both gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic wave (EM) observations opened a new way of exploring the universe, namely, multi-messenger astronomy (MMA). One of the keys to the success of MMA is a rapid identification of EM counterpart through optical/NIR observations. We will present the strategy for prioritization of GW source host galaxy candidates to be observed with narrow-field optical telescopes. Our method relies on recent simulation results regarding plausible properties of GW source host galaxies and the low latency localization map from LIGO/Virgo. We will show the test results for both NS merger and BH merger events using previous events and possible future events and describe observing strategy with our facilities for GW events during the ongoing LIGO/Virgo O3 run.

  • I will start with presenting new results on the stellar populations of galaxies at a redshift of z=9-11, when the universe was only a few hundred million years old. By combining Hubble Space Telescope observations with Spitzer imaging data, I will show how challenging it is currently to measure basic physical properties of these objects such as star-formation rates, stellar masses and stellar ages. In particular, the current measurements greatly depend on the assumptions (priors) for the spectral energy distribution modeling. Finally, I will discuss how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will revolutionize this field next year and allow us to probe and characterize the first generation of galaxies in much greater detail. Specifically, I will present an overview of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), a joint program of the JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO) teams involving 950 hours of observation.

  • The NISS onboard NEXTSat-1 is being developed by Korea astronomy and space science institute (KASI). For the study of the cosmic star formation history, the NISS performs the imaging spectroscopic observation in the near-infrared range for nearby galaxies, low background regions, star-forming regions and so on. It is designed to cover a wide field of view ($2{\times}2$ deg) and a wide wavelength range from 0.95 to $3.8{\mu}m$ by using linear variable filters. In order to reduce the thermal noise, the telescope and the infrared sensor are cooled down to 200 K and 80 K, respectively. Evading a stray light outside the field of view and making the most use of limited space, the NISS adopts the off-axis reflective optical system. The primary and the secondary mirrors, the opto-mechanical part and the mechanical structure are designed to be made of aluminum material. It reduces the degradation of optical performance due to a thermal variation. This paper presents the study on the conceptual design of the NISS.
