Staphylococci are Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic cocci, normally found on the skin andmucosal surfaces of most warm-blooded animals and often involved in a wide variety of diseases in animals.Staphylococcal infections are treated with antibiotics and, consequently, antibiotic resistance and/or acquiredresistance have developed. Staphylococcus (S.) intermedius and Staphylococcus (S.) aureus are 2 comonveterinary isolates that are frequently associated with suppurative infections. This study was undertaken toexamine antimicrobial susceptibility of S. aureus (23 isolates) and S. intermedius (160 isolates) isolatedfrom dogs in Gwangju, Korea and investigate whether the antibiotic resistance of S. aureus and S.intermedius is efected by the site of isolation, age, and sex of dogs. More isolates were isolated fromadult dogs (71.3%) than juveniles (20.5%). Antimicrobial resistance was commonly found for Penicillin,Tetracycline, Trimethoprim-Sulphamethoxazole in both Staphylococcus species. All of the isolates weresusceptible to Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid, Cephalothin, Oxacilin, Neomycin, and Vancomycin. Appropriateprotocol for antibiotic use and strategies to reduce antimicrobial resistance rate will be needed. Periodicsubstitution of antimicrobial agents and limitation of antibiotic use should also be considered.
Staphylococcus intermedius (S. intermedius) has been rarely isolated from horse. In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of S. intermedius isolated from skin lesions of Thoroughbred horse in Daegu Equestrian Association. The skin lesions were showed with dehairing and slight purulent inflammation. Bacteria were isolated from skin lesions and identified as S. intermedius by biochemical tests and MicroLog (BIOLOG, California, USA). Antimicrobial susceptibility test of S. intemedius isolates was performed with 33 antimicrobial agents (BBL, Maryland, USA) by using the agar disk diffusion method. It showed a high sensibility in the amikacin, amoxycillin/clavuramic acid, ampicillin, cefoxitin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, florfenicol, kanamycin, neomycin, nitrofurantoin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, oxacillin, penicillin G, tetracycline and vancomycin. The horse was treated with penicillin, and cured completely after two weeks. The present results showed valuable information for treatment and prevention of skin disease in horse.
This study was performed to examine the antibacterial efecacy of topical agent extracted from Phellodendri cortex, Forsythia fructus and Glycyrrhizae radix as an alternative dermatological agent. Also, the most efficacious concentration of this agent and the skin-contact time inhibiting the vegetation of bacterial cells in various dilutions were determined. Five strains of Staphylococcus intermedius were exposed to various dilutions of this agent. The efficacy was assessed after exposure for time periods varying between 0 and 30 min. The antibacterial efficacy was shown to be the strongest at dilution of 1: 2. The number of viable organisms decreased significantly after 8 minutes of exposure time and was the smallest after 30 minutes of exposure time. This alternative dermatological agent is considered to be effective against Staphylococcus intermedius and has a potential to be a new topical agents far the treatment of pyoderma in dogs.
Bacterial infection of canine atopic dermatitis is largely caused by Staphylococcus intermedius and may be a superficial or deep pyoderma. The Purpose of this study was to identify the major proteins of S. intermedius cell surface components in humoral immune response of atopic dermatitis dog. Sera samples were obtained from dogs with atopic dermatitis and superficial pyoderma referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Konkuk University. An isolate of S. intermedius from a clinical case of canine atopic dermatitis was cultured in brain heart infusion broth overnight at $37^{\circ}C$ in aerobic conditions on an orbital shaker. Following culture, Staphylococci were harvested by centrifugation, washed in PBS, and resuspended in PBS containing lysostaphin. The soluble components were separated by centrifugation and were collected. The soluble extract of S. intermedius was separated by sodium dodecylsulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The proteins were electrophoretically transferred onto nitrocellulose membrane. Western blotting for the specificity of serum IgG antistaphylococcal antibody was performed with anti-dog-IgG and sera obtained from an atopic dermatitis case and a normal dog. The molecular masses of four major proteins of S. intermedius recognized by serum obtained from an atopic dermatitis case were 18, 31, 75, and 110 kDa as determined by Western blot analysis. The present study indicates that most dogs of S. intermedius infection with atopic dermatitis could have a significant humoral immune response to bacterial proteins of the causative organism.
Staphylococcus intermedius is a common cause of otitis externa, pyoderma, and wound infections in companion animals. Although S. intermedius infections are rare in humans, it is zoonotic, with several case reports describing fatal human infections. Presently, we sought to isolate S. intermedius strains from various sources at animal hospitals nationwide in Korea, examine their antibiotic susceptibilities, and determine the possibility of horizontal transmission between animals and humans. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (pFGE) was used to compare the mecA gene in S. intermedius strains from humans, animals, and the environment in animal hospitals. A total of 119 S. intermedius strains were isolated from 529 samples. Using the disk diffusion method, over 90% of the isolates were found to be susceptible to cephalothin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, vancomycin, imipenem, nitroflurantoin, and amikacin, whereas 97.5% and 98.3% of the isolates were resistant to penicillin and ampicillin, respectively. Among the 39 S. intermedius strains harboring mecA, similar PFGE patterns were observed between seven isolates from an animal, two isolates from veterinary staff, and the environment in one animal hospital, and single isolates from an animal and a veterinarian at another hospital. This result suggests the possibility of horizontal transmission of S. intermedius containing mecA between humans, animals, and the environment in animal hospitals and also emphasizes on the importance of S. intermedius with mecA as a possible emerging threat to public health.
This study was performed to investigate the wound healing effects of Allium cepa L. on Staphylococcus intermedius contaminated wound. 4 full-thickness skin wounds ($2\;cm{\times}2\;cm$) were made in the back and Staphylococcus intermedius was inoculated in seven dogs. In each dog, the wounds were treated with onion extract (experimental group) and normal saline (control group), respectively. The wound contraction rate of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group during the experimental period. The occupation rate showed that the wounds of the experimental groups contracted more vigorously than that of the control group in the early period of wound healing. The mean value of tensile strength on the 22 day after wounding was $4,741{\pm}848\;g/cm^2$ in the experimental group and $2,400{\pm}397\;g/cm^2$ in the control group. The number of S. intermedius in the experimental groups was decreased more rapidly than that of the control group. These results suggest that application of activated onion extract in like full-thickness skin wounds promote wound healing.

Specimens collected from various pyogenic lesions of dogs were culturally examined for staphylococci and all staphylococcal isolates obtained from the specimens were also tested for susceptibility to 14 antimicrobial agents. A total of 123 isolates of staphylococci were identified. Of these, 120 were Staphylococcus intermedius and 3 were S aureus. All isolates were susceptible to oxacillin, cefazolin, cephalothin and amikacin, whereas more than 85% of the isolates were resistant to ampicillin, penicillin G and tetracycline. S intermedius isolates could be divided into 8 different biotypes by biotyping with the most common type accounting for 66.7% of the isolates. One hundred and seventeen(97.5%) isolates could be also divided into 26 different antibiogram patterns. The predominant antibiogram type accounted for 34.2% of the isolates. Antibiogram typing was found to be effective in distinguishing epidemiologically related isolates of S intermedius.
Two year-old female miniature schnauzer was presented with depression, abdominal pain and inappetence. Physical examination revealed tachypnea, fever, and abdominal pain. Leukocytosis with neutrophilia was shown in complete blood count. Radiograph revealed the increase of opacity in parallel to vertebra and dislocation of descending colon. Calculi and sludge in bladder, hydronephrosis and dilation of proximal ureter in right kidney were observed in ultrasonographic examination; also, irregular shape of structure in retroperitoneal cavity was observed. Urinalysis showed protein urine and hemtauria. Many epithelial cells, spindle cells, calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals, struvite crystals, amorphous crystals and granular casts, WBC, cocci were examined in urine sediment test. ERD-kit test result was highly positive. Based on those test and excretory urogram pyelonephritis and complete unilateral obstruction of ureter were confirmed. A balloon type structure in retroperitoneal cavity was found through the exploratory laparotomy. In cytologic examination of aspirated fluid from dilated area many degenerated neutrophils and phagocytized cocci were observed. Staphylococcus intermedius was cultured from aspirated fluid. Based on these clinical results retroperitoneal abscesses caused by Staphylococcus intermedius was diagnosed with ureter obstruction and concurrent cystic calculi. Nephrectomy of right kidney with ureter was performed.

The antibacterial activity of Korean honey bee venom (KBV) was examined against seven major bacterial mastitis pathogens, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli, Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus intermedius, Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus uberis isolated from infected mammary quarters of cows. Seven bacterial mastitis pathogens were studied for antibacterial activity of the KBV by disc diffusion assay, minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and bacterial count in milk samples. The KBV showed activity against Ent. faecium, E. coli, MRSA, Staph. aureus, Strep. intermedius. The order of susceptibility of the bacteria against the KBV was Staph. aureus>MRSA>E. coli>Strep. intermedius>Ent. faecium>Strep. oralis>Strep. uberis. The MIC against Staph. aureus, MRSA and E. coli were stronger effect as compared with standard drug. The effect of the KBV ($100{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$) on the viability of Ent. faecium, E. coli, MRSA, Staph. aureus, Strep. intermedius, Strep. oralis and Strep. uberis in milk differed significantly with each other within 12 h incubation period. The results indicate that KBV has significant antibacterial effects against major bacterial mastitis bacteria, Ent. faecium, E.coli, MRSA, Staph. aureus, Strep. intermedius. Results of the study indicate the potential use of KBV as alternative to antibiotic therapy. Further investigations are needed though to confirm its efficacy and its effects on the animals.
