  • SNOMED CT browser is a browsing tool for searching clinical terms in SNOMED CT which is a standard terminology set used worldwide. The search result view of previous browsers merely list up candidate terminologies. The problem is that most of users become confused about how to select an appropriate term from the list. This leads serious waste of medical recoding cost. This paper discusses characteristics of SNOMED CT dataset and proposes a novel design of enhanced result view by restructuring the results using relationships of SNOMED CT concepts. Using the proposed scheme, medical doctors or officers can select appropriate terms more efficiently and can reduce overall recording time.

  • In the field of Korean medicine (KM), KM terms has been mixed used for a long period. After the Society of KM had systematically organized the KM terms used in our country, the book for the Korean medical standard terminologies was published. In this study, we developed an online service based on the book. The online service provides various useful functions for searching the terms and their commentary and collecting users' opinions. Users can also compare the standard terms with their semantic search results and naver's knowledge search results within our system. By analyzing logs of our system, we suggested several directions for future development, including the improvement of search functions, advertisements, and the provision of open APIs. In the future, our online service might provide the important information on clinics, academic researches, and international standards.

  • Objectives : The aim of the study is to explain the general guidelines of the WHO standard acupuncture point locations (APLs). Understanding the general guidelines will enable experts to make the clear use of the standard APL for education, research and practice. Methods : In the beginning of development of the standard APL, experts made general guidelines to draw mutual agreements of the three nations (Korea, China, and Japan) on the standard APL. The guidelines include point locating methods, syntax of descriptive sentences, landmarks on body surface, reference acupuncture points, usage of anatomical terminology, and proportional bone measurements. Results : We found that there are some considerable problems in practical use of the APLs due to the strict application of anatomical terms, even on accessory phrases such as region of body in the sentence of each description. Conclusions : We hope that the study helps readers expand the understanding of the newly developed standard APLs resulting from increased application of acupuncture points. Also, it would be a reference to revise the WHO standard APLs in the future.

  • Ondol is a traditional underfloor heating system designated as a national intangible cultural heritage of Korea. The Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) publishes a standard specification for the repair of cultural properties, including ondol. This standard specification is used as a guide for contractors who repair ondol in the field. However, the standard specification for ondol repair has some errors and is difficult to understand in the field. This paper proposes a revision of the standard specification for ondol repair. This study found that the standard specification for ondol repair has some problems in terms of the terminology and structure of ondol. These problems were sufficient to confuse ondol repairers in the field. Therefore, this study proposes to revise the standard specification to correct these errors and make it easier for ondol repairers in the field to understand. This study is expected to help recognize and preserve ondol as a cultural property and not just as a building.

  • A controlled medical vocabulary is a vital component of medical information management because it enables computers to use information meaningfully and different institutions to share the medical data. There are currently many standard medical vocabularies - SNOMED-CT, ICD-10, UMLS, GALEN, MED, etc, but none is universally accepted as an optimal controlled medical vocabulary for application to medical information system. Moreover, it is difficult to settle the well-designed local data dictionary consisting of controlled medical vocabularies for the individual hospital information system (HIS). One of the major reasons is the local terminology with poor contents have been used in the hospital. Thus, as a trial, the local controlled vocabulary referencing system has being constructed in a limited medical field - nuclear medicine. We selected practical nuclear medicine terms from interpretation reports and electronic medical records, and removed ambiguity and redundancy, mapping the selected terms to standard medical vocabularies. Relationship and hierarchy structure between terms have being made, referring to standard medical vocabularies. Further studies may be warranted.

  • The purpose of the present study was to document the standardization and management process of interface terminology regarding the chief complaints, diagnoses, and procedures, including surgery in a four-hospital consortium. The process was proposed, discussed, modified, and finalized in 2016 by the Terminology Standardization Committee (TSC), consisting of personnel from four hospitals. A request regarding interface terminology was classified into one of four categories: 1) registration of a new term, 2) revision, 3) deleting an old term and registering a new term, and 4) deletion. A request was processed in the following order: 1) collecting testimonies from related departments and 2) voting by the TSC. At least five out of the seven possible members of the voting pool need to approve of it. Mapping to the reference terminology was performed by three independent medical information managers. All processes were performed online, and the voting and mapping results were collected automatically. This process made the decision-making process clear and fast. In addition, this made users receptive to the decision of the TSC. In the 16 months after the process was adopted, there were 126 new terms registered, 131 revisions, 40 deletions of an old term and the registration of a new term, and 1235 deletions.

  • Objective: Various controlled vocabulary such as thesaurus and classification make us to reuse and share effectively by defining different concept and linking terms each other. The UMLS(Unified Medical Language System) is one of the most universal medical terminology systems. It is needed various methods to share and reuse information of traditional Korean medicine. We will research on method that adopt SUI of the UMLS(that is de facto standard in medical terminology system) in traditional Korean medical terminology. Method: We described major problems and applying process when we tried to add traditional Korean medicine in the part of meridian into the UMLS metathesaurus. Comparing western medical terms and traditional Korean medical terms for applying UMLS metathesaurus, there is not only many consistency, but also differences. Result: We confirmed what is the differences and consistency between western medical terms and traditional Korean medical terms. And then reviewed methods that apply the CUI, LUI, SUI in traditional Korean medical terms. Traditional Korean medical terms are not discriminated by singular or plural string. In addition, traditional Korean medical terms have vary string by initial law: the law of initial sound of a syllable. Character is described with Korean, traditional Chinese, modern Chinese, etc. According to meaning, language, initial law, SUI has a distinct value respectively. Conclusion: There are many differences to apply the UMLS between western medical terms and traditional Korean medical terms. For the better implementation to traditional Korean medicine into the UMLS, further research is needed in standardization and classification of traditional Korean medical terms, medical information system, etc. We hope this study helps the implementation UMLS, EHR, knowledge based system in Oriental medicine in the future.
