  • Removal of Cd(Ⅱ), Zn(Ⅱ) and Cu(Ⅱ) from aqueous solutions using the adsorption process on magadiite has been investigated. It was found that the removal percentage of metal cations at equilibrium increases with increasing temperature, and follows the order of Cd(Ⅱ) > Cu(Ⅱ) > Zn(Ⅱ). Equilibrium modeling of adsorption showed that the adsorptions of Cd(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), and Zn(Ⅱ) were fitted to Langmuir isotherm. Kinetic modeling of the adsorption showed that first order reversible kinetic model fitted to experimental data. From kinetic model and equilibrium data, the overall rate constant (k) and the equilibrium constant (K) for the adsorption process were calculated. The overall rates of adsorption of metal ions follow the order of Cd(Ⅱ) > Cu(Ⅱ) > Zn(Ⅱ). From the results of thermodynamic analysis, standard Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), standard enthalpy (ΔH°), and standard entropy (ΔS°) of adsorption process were calculated.

  • This study was conducted to develope calculation method of standard rainfall, which was used for predicting the outbreaking time of disaster by using Tank model, on warning and evacuation for soil sediment disaster. We investigate adeption possibility of developed method through comparing storage function method with Tank model. We calculated storage amount rainfall by storage function method and Tank model with 36 hillslope failures which have record on outbreaking time of disaster. The result in case of Sedimentary (quarternary period) showed that the difference of outbreaking time was 1.6 hour in case of tank model, but 3.2 hour in case of storage function method. In addition, the deviation of the peak storage were 7% in case of tank model, but 63% in case of storage function method. Total evacuation period was analyzed by using observed 5 years (1993-1997) rainfall data as well as each standard rainfalls which were determinated by two methods. The result showed that evacuation time by storage function method was about twice as many as that by tank model. Therefore, we concluded that calculation by tank model for predicting the outbreaking time of disaster was more useful and accurate than storage function method.

  • The emergence of high-rise buildings has necessitated frequent structural health monitoring and maintenance for safety reasons. Wind causes damage and structural changes on tall structures; thus, safe structures should be designed. The pressure developed on tall buildings has been utilized in previous research studies to assess the impacts of wind on structures. The wind tunnel test is a primary research method commonly used to quantify the aerodynamic characteristics of high-rise buildings. Wind pressure is measured by placing pressure sensor taps at different locations on tall buildings, and the collected data are used for analysis. However, sensors may malfunction and produce erroneous data; these data losses make it difficult to analyze aerodynamic properties. Therefore, it is essential to generate missing data relative to the original data obtained from neighboring pressure sensor taps at various intervals. This study proposes a deep learning-based, deep convolutional generative adversarial network (DCGAN) to restore missing data associated with faulty pressure sensors installed on high-rise buildings. The performance of the proposed DCGAN is validated by using a standard imputation model known as the generative adversarial imputation network (GAIN). The average mean-square error (AMSE) and average R-squared (ARSE) are used as performance metrics. The calculated ARSE values by DCGAN on the building model's front, backside, left, and right sides are 0.970, 0.972, 0.984 and 0.978, respectively. The AMSE produced by DCGAN on four sides of the building model is 0.008, 0.010, 0.015 and 0.014. The average standard deviation of the actual measures of the pressure sensors on four sides of the model were 0.1738, 0.1758, 0.2234 and 0.2278. The average standard deviation of the pressure values generated by the proposed DCGAN imputation model was closer to that of the measured actual with values of 0.1736,0.1746,0.2191, and 0.2239 on four sides, respectively. In comparison, the standard deviation of the values predicted by GAIN are 0.1726,0.1735,0.2161, and 0.2209, which is far from actual values. The results demonstrate that DCGAN model fits better for data imputation than the GAIN model with improved accuracy and fewer error rates. Additionally, the DCGAN is utilized to estimate the wind pressure in regions of buildings where no pressure sensor taps are available; the model yielded greater prediction accuracy than GAIN.

  • Modelling an equilibrium atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in computational wind engineering (CWE) and relevant areas requires the boundary conditions, the turbulence model and associated constants to be consistent with each other. Among them, the inflow boundary conditions play an important role and determine whether the equations of the turbulence model are satisfied in the whole domain. In this paper, the idea of modeling an equilibrium ABL through specifying proper inflow boundary conditions is extended to the SST $k-{\omega}$ model, which is regarded as a better RANS model for simulating the blunt body flow than the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. Two new sets of inflow boundary conditions corresponding to different descriptions of the inflow velocity profiles, the logarithmic law and the power law respectively, are then theoretically proposed and numerically verified. A method of determining the undetermined constants and a set of parameter system are then given, which are suitable for the standard wind terrains defined in the wind load code. Finally, the full inflow boundary condition equations considering the scale effect are presented for the purpose of general use.

  • A recently reported simple phenomenological constitutive model (SK) demonstrated comparable or better data description capability to/than one of the rigorous and physics-based models, the PTW model. The simple SK model is believed to be an efficient model for practical applications where an extensive computation is needed, and can serve as a rigorous comparison standard for the development of a physics-based model.

  • The fluid flow over structures has been widely investigated by many researchers because its extensive application in offshore structures, skyscrapers, chimneys and cooling towers, brides. In the viewpoint of reducing the drag for offshore structure, it becomes challenging problem in the field of hydrodynamic of offshore structure. The purpose of this study is to investigate a flow over a square cylinder with an attached splitter plate using RANS method. First, RANS turbulent models such as a standard $k-{\omega}$ model, SST $k-{\omega}$ model, RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model, realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model, standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model were used for choosing suitable turbulent model which has the best agreement with available experimental result. Drag of single cylinder estimated by using standard $k-{\omega}$ has a good agreement with published experimental result. Therefore, the stand $k-{\omega}$ was selected for simulation for flow over a square cylinder with an attached plate. Second, the numerical results of drag of square cylinder with an attached splitter plate in various length of an attached plate were performed using RANS method in ANSYS Fluent. In this paper, the numerical simulations were conducted at a Reynolds number of 485 and the thickness of the splitter plate is chosen as a constant value about 10% of cylinder width. The numerical results of drag coefficient of square cylinder are compared with experimental result published by other researchers. Finally, the effect of the splitter plate attached to the rear side of the square cylinder has been investigated numerically with a focus on the drag coefficient and flow characteristic. As a result, the drag coefficient decreases with an increase in splitter plate length.
