Comparison of Turbulence Models for the Prediction of Wakes around VLCC Hull Forms

  • Turbulent flow calculations are performed for the two modern practical VLCCs with the sable forebody and the slightly different afterbody, i.e. KVLCC and KVLCC2. Three $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ turbulence models are tested to investigate the differences caused by the turbulence models. The calculated results around the two VLCC hull forms using O-O grid topology and profile-fitted surface meshes are compared to the measured data from towing tank experiment. The realizable $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$model provided realistic wake distribution with hook-like shape, while the standard and RNG-based $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$models failed. It is very encouraging to see that the CFD with relatively simple turbulence closure can tell the difference quantitatively as well as qualitatively for the two hull forms with stern frameline modification.

  • The objective of the present simulations is to evaluate the applicability of the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model in engineering practice in the subcritical to supercritical flow regimes. Two-dimensional numerical simulations of flow around a circular cylinder at $Re=1{\times}10^5$, $5{\times}10^5$ and $1{\times}10^6$, had been performed using Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (URANS) equations with the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. Solution verification had been studied by evaluating grid and time step size convergence. For each Reynolds number, several meshes with different grid and time step size resolutions were chosen to calculate the hydrodynamic quantities such as the time-averaged drag coefficient, root-mean square value of lift coefficient, Strouhal number, the coefficient of pressure on the downstream point of the cylinder, the separation angle. By comparing the values of these quantities of adjacent grid or time step size resolutions, convergence study has been performed. Solution validation is obtained by comparing the converged results with published numerical and experimental data. The deviations of the values of present simulated quantities from those corresponding experimental data become smaller as Reynolds numbers increases from $1{\times}10^5$ to $1{\times}10^6$. This may show that the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model with enhanced wall treatment appears to be applicable for higher Reynolds number turbulence flow.

Numerical study of turbulent wake flow behind a three-dimensional steep hill

  • A numerical investigation on the turbulent flows over a three-dimensional steep hill is presented. The numerical model developed for the present work is based on the finite volume method and the SIMPLE algorithm with a non-staggered grid system. Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and Shih's non-linear model are tested for the validation of the prediction accuracy in the 3D separated flow. Comparisons of the mean velocity and turbulence profiles between the numerical predictions and the measurements show good agreement. The Shih's non-linear model is found to predict mean flow and turbulence better than the Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$. Flow patterns have also been examined to explain the difference in the cavity zone between 2D and 3D hills.

  • Ventilation effect is analyzed for boiler building with multiple heat sources. Air flow inside the boiler building is characterized as turbulent mixed convection. Analysis methodology is set up with two different $k-{\varepsilon}$ type models (standard $k-{\varepsilon}$, RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$). Two different cases with high and low outside temperature are analyzed. In case of high outside temperature condition, mixed convection is well realized inside the boiler building. With different upper louver opening rate, air flow is also well established and proper opening rate is found to meet design limit in case of low outside temperature condition. Difference of analysis results for two different turbulence models are not significant. Therefore, analysis methodology with simple $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is found to be reliable for the boiler building ventilation analysis. However, more simplified geometrical model is desired to expand its application.

  • As side-by-side refrigerators came into existence, there has been a growing concern about the free%ins-up of the vital equipment in a walk-in freezer. Due to a bad performance, customers are experiencing too much frustration. In order to minimize the freezing phenomena, the numerical simulation has been performed on the characteristics of cold air flow in a side-by-side refrigerator. The flow field has been simulated with a standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulent model and a SIMPLE algorithm based on the finite volume method. Through the results of the analysis of the pattern of cold air flow, finally the shape of outlet for cold air flow was modified. The present model was compared with the modified model. The latter was better than the former in minimizing the freezing phenomena.

  • This paper concentrates on the development of a computational design program to determine nozzle size in water jet, combing the numerical optimization technique with the flow analysis code. To achieve the above objective, a two-dimensional model was developed for investigating the fluid flow in water jet and calculating the velocity and pressure distributions. The mathematical formulation as a standard ${k}-\varepsilon$ model was solved employing a general thermo fluid-mechanics computer program, PHOENICS code, which is based on the Semi-Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations(SIMPLE) algorithm. The developed code was applied to water jet design to determine the nozzle size, and investigated the effect of the change of nozzle location. Calculated results showed that the flow pattern is not changed as the change of nozzle location.

Effects of Radiation Heat Transfer on the Fire in an Atrium (아트리움 공간에서 화재발생시 복사열전달의 영향 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is focussed on the numerical predictions of temperature distribution by radiation heat transfer in atrium fire using the field fire model and the CCRHT-3D code. This code uses standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model with SIMPLE algorithm and weighted sum of gray gases model regrouping(WSGGM-RG). The WSGGM-RG calculates radiative properties on the reduced computational loads while reserving the accuracy. The numerical results show that lower temperature distributions on the wall and the top ceiling wall can be obtained by considering radiative heat transfer. The temperature on the top ceiling wall can be an important parameter in predicting the operating condition of the sprinkler head.

A Study on the Characteristics of the Flow around a Sunken Vessel (침선어초 주위의 유동특성에 관한 연구)

  • This paper deals with the numerical and experimental study on the characteristics of the flow around a sunken vessel. Numerical simulation of the two dimensional steady flow on the midship section are carried out by the CFD code which is developed by using finite volume method and which includes the standard $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ model with standard wall function. A experimental study is also carried out for the 1/100 scale model in circulating water channel. A velocity fields around the ship are measuremed by using particle image velocimetry technique. And the fluid forces acting on the ship hull by uniform current are measured by two axis load cell. The computed and measured velocity fields on the midship section are compared with each other in the view point of velocity dstribution and reattachement length, which shows good agreement in quality. The drag force on the vessel also showed the same tendency in both computational and experimental results. However, the quantitative disagreements are shown due to the three dimensional effect of the experiment. The result are used to determine the functional efficiency and stability of the vessel as a artificial reef.

Numerical Study of Flow Characteristics over Square Cylinders with an Attached Splitter Plate

  • The fluid flow over structures has been widely investigated by many researchers because its extensive application in offshore structures, skyscrapers, chimneys and cooling towers, brides. In the viewpoint of reducing the drag for offshore structure, it becomes challenging problem in the field of hydrodynamic of offshore structure. The purpose of this study is to investigate a flow over a square cylinder with an attached splitter plate using RANS method. First, RANS turbulent models such as a standard $k-{\omega}$ model, SST $k-{\omega}$ model, RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model, realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model, standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model were used for choosing suitable turbulent model which has the best agreement with available experimental result. Drag of single cylinder estimated by using standard $k-{\omega}$ has a good agreement with published experimental result. Therefore, the stand $k-{\omega}$ was selected for simulation for flow over a square cylinder with an attached plate. Second, the numerical results of drag of square cylinder with an attached splitter plate in various length of an attached plate were performed using RANS method in ANSYS Fluent. In this paper, the numerical simulations were conducted at a Reynolds number of 485 and the thickness of the splitter plate is chosen as a constant value about 10% of cylinder width. The numerical results of drag coefficient of square cylinder are compared with experimental result published by other researchers. Finally, the effect of the splitter plate attached to the rear side of the square cylinder has been investigated numerically with a focus on the drag coefficient and flow characteristic. As a result, the drag coefficient decreases with an increase in splitter plate length.

Numerical Analysis of Three Dimensional Turbulent Flow in a HVAC Duct (HVAC 덕트내의 3차원 난류유동에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • In this study, three dimensional flow analysis in a HVAC duct was performed computationally using various turbulence models and compared numerical predictions such as outlet flow split, surface pressure distribution along the duct to experimental data. It's well known that accuracy of computational predictions of flow heavily dependent on turbulent models and discritization method. Therefore, in this work, to assess the ability of turbulent models to predict characteristics of duct flow, three kinds of models, namely standard $k-\varepsilon$, RNG $k-\varepsilon$ and modified $k-\varepsilon$, containing parameter for the effect of streamline curvature were employed and validated one another by comparing with experimental data. In results, modified $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model allows a successful prediction of static pressure distribution particulary at around strong curvature but little improvement flow split. In the futrue, adoption of CFD to design HVAC duct with modified $k-\varepsilon$ model will bring benefits of producing more accurate prediction, and also give designers more detail information much more than now.
