Most of the present demand in the world is met by fossil and nuclear power plants. A small part is met by renewable energy technologies. Among the renewable power sources, wind and solar energy have experienced a remarkably rapid growth in the past 10 years. Recently the utilization of wind power has been receiving close attention in this country, especially for the electrification of off-shore islands. The objective of this study is to demonstrate a small wind energy system as a stand-alone power source.

This paper presents the method of ESS energy capacity calculation for stand-alone renewable energy generation system consisting of photovoltaic energy. There is almost no power from photovoltaic system during sunless days. So this source is very weak in terms of the power supply reliability. To improve problem of power supply, battery is mainly used Energy Storage System(ESS). The number of sunless days and Depth of Discharge(DOD) is important factor to determine energy capacity of battery. However, a many study for economical design is required due to the high cost of ESS. In this paper, we propose the new method of ESS energy capacity calculation by applying different DOD for operation with and without sun. We determine the Battery capacity using higher DOD of operation during sunless day than the DOD of the normal operation. And we carried out an economic analysis of the calculation results.

The market for distributed power generation based on renewable energy is increasing, particularly for standalone mini-grid applications in developing countries with limited energy resources. Stand-alone power systems (SAPS) are of special interest combined with renewable energy design in areas not connected to the electric grid. Traditionally, such systems have been powered by diesel engine generator sets (DEGS), but also hybrid systems with photovoltaic and/or wind energy conversion systems (WECS) are becoming quite common nowadays. Hybrid energy systems can now be used to generate energy consumed in remote areas and stand-alone microgrids. This paper describes the design, simulation and feasibility study of a hybrid energy system for a stand-alone power system. A simulated model is developed to investigate the design and performance of stand-alone hydrogen renewable energy systems. The analysis presented here is based on transient system simulation program (TRNSYS) with realistic ventilation load of a large store. Design of a hybrid energy system is site specific and depends on the resources available and the load demand.

This paper summarizes development of a 10KW stand-alone power processing unit for 5KW SOFC-low voltage battery hybrid fuel cell power generation system. The power processing unit Includes three parts a high frequency DC-DC converter boosts low fuel cell voltage, a DC-AC inverter converts a dc voltage into a regulated ac voltage and a bidirectional DC-DC converter charges or discharges the battery. The converter topology, design, control method, and experimental result arc presented to meet the specifications such as efficiency of 90% and cost of $40/KW laid down for the "2003 Future Energy Challenge Competition" organized by the U.S. Department of Energy and IEEE. and IEEE.

In this paper, we study the BESS of a standalone hybrid street light. The proposed BESS proposed a BESS with the function of efficiently charging irregularly generated power from two or more generators. AC generated by wind power is converted to DC using an AC / DC converter and then to a voltage that can charge the battery through the DC / DC converter. The lack of voltage and current, which is a disadvantage of the MPPT method used in solar power generation, is compensated by the DC value of wind power generation. The compensation method is to convert the DC generated from solar power into a voltage suitable for charging the battery through a DC / DC converter, and then connect the DC generated in wind power in parallel to compensate for the insufficient current to charge the battery in a short time. Allow this to begin. By securing the maximum charging time, the usage time of the stand-alone hybrid street light is huge. Experimental results show that the battery has a short charging time and can be efficiently applied to battery-dependent standalone hybrid street lights.

Recently, the demand for high penetration of variable renewable energy (VRE) penetration in a power system is increased. In consequence, distribution systems including microgrids confront the increased installation of VRE-based distributed generation. Despite of the high demand of VRE-based distributed generation in a distribution system, the installation of photovoltaic (PV) system in a distribution system has been restricted by various problems. In other words, the hosting capacity for high VRE penetration in a distribution system is limited. This paper analyzes the improvements of hosting capacity VRE penetration of stand-alone microgrid (SAMG) with energy storage system (ESS) by considering virtual-slack (VS) control based on power sensitivity. With the pre-defined power sensitivity, the ESS operates as virtual slack in the SAMG by controlling its bus voltage and phase angle indirectly. Therefore, the ESS enables the increase of VRE penetration in the SAMG. The proposed VS control is realized by analyzing the ESS as a virtual slack in power flow analysis based on power sensitivity. Then its validity is demonstrated with the case study on the SAMG in South Korea with practical data.

Recently, it has demanded to the wireless monitoring system in stand-alone PV power generation system. We propose the multiplex monitoring method using RF unit of low-price. RF unit consists of RF modem and communication controller. It is also able to use by repeater to communicate long distance. In this paper. two algorithms were programmed by CCS-C and C++ for multiplex monitoring method, The algorithm of choosing unit was used 'select and poll method' and the course assignment algorithm was embodied with 'Bellman-Ford algorithm'. The good result was achieved in the actual test without communication-data lose. The proposed method will be applied such as monitoring system of PV light on the wayside, monitoring system of unmanned lighthouse, monitoring system of refrigeration container on vessel and so on. It can be applied in the field that various ocean energy system.
This paper presents the modeling, control and simulation of an interconnection system (ICS) of cascaded distributed generation (DG) modules for both grid-tied and stand-alone operations. The overall configuration of the interconnection system is given. The interconnection system consists of a cascaded DC/DC boost converters and a DC/AC inverter. Detailed modeling of the interconnection system incorporating a cascaded architecture has not been considered in previous research. In this paper, suitable control systems for the cascaded architecture of power electronic converters in an interconnection system have been studied and modeled in detail. A novel control system for DC/DC boost converters is presented based on a droop voltage controller. Also, a novel control strategy for DC/AC inverters based on the average large signal model to control the aggregated DG modules under both grid-tied and stand-alone modes is demonstrated. Simulation results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed control systems.

Cost effective simulation schemes for Wind Power Generation Systems (WPGS) considering wind turbine types, generators and load capacities have been strongly investigated by researchers. As an alternative, a true weather condition based simulation method using a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) is experimented in this paper for the online real-time simulation of the WPGS. A stand-alone WPGS is, especially, simulated using the Simulation method for WPGS using Real Weather conditions (SWRW) in this work. The characteristic equation of a wind turbine is implemented in the RTDS and a RTDS model component that can be used to represent any type of wind turbine in the simulations is also established. The actual data related to weather conditions are interfaced directly to the RTDS for the purpose of online real-time simulation of the stand-alone WPGS. The outcomes of the simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme. The results also signify that the cost effective verification of efficiency and stability for the WPGS is possible by the proposed real-time simulation method.

Marine facilities like buoy, lighthouse are operated with stand alone power supply system. This power system can consist of a stand-alone type power system such as PV(Photovoltaic) system, wave system or hybrid system which is not cooperated with a commercial power system. Generally, PV power system for marine facilities can not supply a sufficient power to buoy, because it is so influenced from weather condition. For solving this problem the hybrid power system with PV and wave is studied on a various area, that is why a hybrid power system is requires to overcome these problems. This paper will describe a generation characteristic of WEC(Wave Energy Converter) for buoy, and an AFS(Anti-Fouling System) influence on WEC.
