  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different housing systems on the performances of sows and their piglets during gestation. A total of 90 sows (Landrace ${\times}$ Yorkshire) were employed into 3 experimental farms to give 3 treatments, stall housing, group housing in either slatted floor or litter floor. Individual sow was used as an experimental unit. Group housed sows were fed with electronic sow feeder during gestation. Performance measures were taken on sows and piglets. Back-fat thickness and body condition score of sows were not affected by housing systems for pregnant sows. There was no difference of estrus interval of pregnant sows between housing systems. The lower number of still-birth was observed in group housing type. The number of wounded sows in slatted floor was remarkably increased compared with sows in litter floor. This study showed that the housing systems could fairly impact sow and piglet performances.

  • The 'NREL Phase VI' model with a 10.06m diameter was tested in the NASA Ames tunnel to make a reference data of the computational models. The test was conducted at the one rotational speed, blade tip speed 38m/s and the Reynolds number of the sectional airfoils in that test was around 1E6. The 1/5 scale down model of the 'NREL Phase VI' model was used in this paper to study the power characteristics in low Reynolds number region, 0.1E6 ~ 0.4E6 which is achievable range for the conventional wind tunnel facilities. The torque generated by the blade was directly measured by using the torque sensor installed in the rotating axis for a given wind speed and rotational speed. The power characteristics below the stall condition, lambda > 4, was presented in this paper. The power coefficient is very low in the condition below the Re. 0.2E6 and rapidly increases as the Re. increases. And it still increases but the variation is not so big in the condition above the Re. 0.3E6. This results shows that to study the performance of the wind turbine blade by using the scaled down model, the Re. should be larger than the 0.3E6.

  • Aerodynamic loads for a horizontal axis wind turbine of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI rotor in yawed condition were predicted by using the blade element momentum theorem. The classical blade element momentum theorem was complemented by several aerodynamic corrections and models including the Pitt and Peters' yaw correction, Buhl's wake correction, Prandtl's tip loss model, Du and Selig's three-dimensional (3-D) stall delay model, etc. Changes of the aerodynamic loads according to the azimuth angle acting on the span-wise location of the NREL Phase VI blade were compared with the experimental data with various yaw angles and inflow speeds. The computational flow chart for the classical blade element momentum theorem was adequately modified to accurately calculate the combined functions of additional corrections and models stated above. A successive under-relaxation technique was developed and applied to prevent possible failure during the iteration process. Changes of the angle of attack according to the azimuth angle at the specified radial location of the blade were also obtained. The proposed numerical procedure was verified, and the predicted data of aerodynamic loads for the NREL Phase VI rotor bears an extremely close resemblance to those of the experimental data.

  • A particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed to investigate the effects of blowing jet on the flow characteristics over stationary and pitch-oscillating airfoils. The Reynolds number was $7.84{\times}10^5$ based on the chord length. It was found that for stationary airfoil cases, continuous and pulsating blowing jets successfully reduced separated wake region at high angles of attack. A comparison study of two different types of jet blowing indicated that pulsating jet is more effective than continuous jet for flow separation control. Pulsating leading-edge blowing postpones flow separation and increased stall angle of attack by $2^{\circ}{\sim}3^{\circ}$. For pitch-oscillating airfoil cases, the PIV results showed that blowing jet efficiently delays the separation onset point during pitch-up stroke, whereas it does not prevent flow separation during pitch-down stroke, even at angles of attack smaller than static ones.

  • Much numerical and experimental research has been done for the flow around an oscillating airfoil. The main research topics are vortex shedding, dynamic stall phenomenon, MAV's lift and thrust generation. Until now, researches mainly have been concentrated on analyzing the wake flow for the variation of frequency and amplitude at a low angle of attack. In this study, wake structures and acoustic wave propagation characteristics were studied for a plunging airfoil at high angle of attack. The governing equations are the Navier-Stokes equation with LES turbulence model. OHOC (Optimized High-Order Compact) scheme and 4th order Runge-Kutta method were used. The Mach number is 0.3, the Reynolds number is, and the angle of attack is from $20^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$. The plunging frequency and the amplitude are from 0.05 to 0.15, and from 0.1 to 0.2, respectively. Due to the high resolution numerical method, wake vortex shedding and pressure wave propagation process, as well as the propagation characteristics of acoustic waves can be simulated. The results of frequency analysis show that the flow has the mixed characteristics of the forced plunging frequency and the vortex shedding frequency at high angle of attack.

  • H. Kim, B.K. Lee and C.K. Rheem have been experimentally studied to clarified the mechanism of thrust force generated by sculling motion for the propulsion of Korean small boats. The experimental investigations have been conducted under the bollard condition by installing a scull at the end of a trimming tank of towing tank. The sculling motion produced by the skilful fisherman and the resultant venerated forces have been measured in respect to the Cartesian coordinate fitted to the pivot point of the scull. ("An Experimental Study on the Propulsive Characteristics of Sculls". J. of the Soc. of Naval Arch. of Korea, Vol. 26, No. 3, 1989, pp.13-24) Through these experiments the trajectory of the blade tip and the angular displacement of the blade section have been measured as shown in Fig. 1 and 2 of this paper. And at the same time the resultant hydrodynamic force components are expressed in Fig. 3 and 4. These three dimensional data of sculling motion and generated real time force components are the unique experimental information which could clarify the thrust force generating mechanism of sculling motion. The experimental results have been reanalyzed by focusing the relation between instantaneous attack angle of blade section and the resultants real time force components. Through these investigation it is found out that the conventional imagination that the 7cull motion should be effective in generating lift force must be reconsidered because the attack angle of scull blade are too great to free from stall phenomena during the sculling operation.

  • This study is purposed to examine how fanner's living conditions and managements have been improved during the last five years(1985 through 1989) on the basis of the information got from the sample survey of 30 farm households chosen in Galma-ri, Buseok-Myeon, Seosan county, Chungnam province. The followings are major results of the study. (1) There have been much improvement of kitchen facilities and increasing number of cultural goods, but not much in the condition of sanitation facilities. (2) The size of farm warehouse and stall have been greatly enlarged and there has been large variation in the heads of big animals such as cattle during the surveyed period. This may reflect the facts that farm managements become more diversified and commercialized. (3) It is shown that fanners more voluntarily accept new fanning techniques about their concerning crops. Also there have been rapid changes in the pattern of upland cropping system, adjusting to the commercialization of agriculture. (4) Currently, fanners tend to react to the price signal of market system more sensitively than before. Accordingly, agricultural income structure is varied subject to price fluctuation in the short run period.

  • Centrifugal compressors are widely used and each operating condition is different. However, it cannot be manufactured according to the every operating condition. In the this study, performance of compressor was evaluated with various rotational speeds of impeller and various stagger angles of diffuser in order to apply a typical model widely. A centrifugal compressor was designed and manufactured based on the design point. On this machines, an experiment was conducted and the performance was predicted at off-design point. The performance prediction was validated with the experimental result and the numerical result. Although the isentropic efficiency on the prediction was slightly lower than that on the experimental result due to the heat loss in the experiment, the pressure ratio was predicted well and also the predicted results were matched well with the numerical results. When the rotational speed of the impeller and the stagger angle of the diffuser were changed together, the compressor can be worked in the high efficiency region and avoided operating in the stall region.

  • The flow characteristics in the blade passage and in the wake region of a low speed axial flow fan have been investigated by experimental analysis using a rotating hot-wire sensor for design and off-design operating conditions. The results show that the tip leakage vortex is moved upstream when flow rate is decreased, thus disturbing the formation of wake flow near the rotor tip. The tip leakage vortex interfaces with blade pressure surface, and results in high velocity fluctuation near the pressure surface. From axial velocity distributions downstream of the fan rotor, large axial velocity decay near the rotor tip is observed at near stall condition, which results in large blockage compared to that at the design condition. Although the wake flow downstream of the rotor blade is clearly measured at all operating conditions, the trough of the high velocity fluctuation due to Karmann vortex street in the wake flow is mainly observed at a higher flow condition than the design flow rate.
