The objective of this study was to determine the effect of goat grazing on the surface water quality of the alpine grasslands. Seven sites were selected across the goat farm for water sample collection and analysis. Samples were analyzed for BOD (Biological oxygen demand), total nitrogen, total phosphorous, electrical conductivity and water turbidity. All the above-mentioned parameters remained below the standard limit of Korean government at the end site. Puddles showed higher values, but below standard, as stagnant water has lower physico-chemical properties as of flowing water. The present study clearly showed that goat grazing doesn't affect water quality in grasslands if grazing is according to carrying capacity of grassland and fertilizer application is judicious.

The response of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations caused significant change in root number, root length, coleoptile length, shoot length and leaf age of seedlings. The genotypic difference in the effect of DO also highly significant (P<0.01) for all of the seedling traits. The number and length of root were extremely inhibited at the condition of $0.39\pm0.09$ DO concentration. While the coleoptile elongated markedly in the lowest DO concentrations, the shoot did not develop. The root growth was improved slightly at the $1.39\pm0.27mg L^{-1}$, however, there were no difference among genotypes at these two low DO concentrations. As the DO concentration become higher, the growth of root and shoot was improved remarkably. Root number, root length and shoot length was significantly different between $20\;and\;30^{\circ}C$ in DO rich and normal conditions, the development of those traits were apparently accelerated in high water temperature, however those traits of seedlings in DO deficiency were not different between the two temperatures except for shoot length. On the other hand the coleoptile length was not affected by the stagnant water temperature; it was stimulated by the low DO concentration. The competition of DO was greater as the seedling density was increased in the stagnant water, therefore the seedlings grown under high density have long and white coleoptiles, and the growth of roots and shoots was retarded severely.
The objectives of study were to evaluate fish species compositions of trophic guilds and tolerance guilds and apply ecological fish assessment (EFA) models to Bekjae Weir, Keum-River Watershed. The EFA models were Stream Index of Biological Integrity (SIBI) used frequently for running water and Lentic Ecosystem Health Assessment (LEHA) used for assessments of stagnant water. The region of Bekjae Weir as a "four major river project" was originally a lotic ecosystem before the weir construction (2010, $B_{WC}$) but became more like lentic-lotic hybrid system after the construction (2011, $A_{WC}$). In the analysis of species composition and ecological bioindicator (fish), fish species with a preference of running water showed significant decreases (p < 0.05), whereas the species with a preference of stagnant water showed significant increases (p < 0.05). After the weir construction, relative abundances of tolerant species increased, and the proportion of insectivores decreased. This phenomenon indicated the changes of biotic compositions in the system by the weir construction. Applications of SIBI and LEHA models to the system showed that the two model values decreased at the same time after the weir construction ($A_{WC}$), and the region became more like lentic-lotic hybrid system, indicating the degradation of ecosystem health. The model values of SIBI were 19 and 16, respectively, in the BWC and AWC, and the health conditions were both "C-rank". In the mean time, the LEHA model analysis showed that the values was 28 in the BWC and 24 in the AWC, thus the health was turned to be "B-Rank" in the BWC and "C-Rank" in the AWC. indicating a degradation of ecological heath after the weir construction.

As our interests in eco-friendly materials have been significantly increased, the utilization of porous zeolite concrete that has structural functionality and permeability has been increased. In this paper, the mixture of porous concrete and zeolite, which can be used as multirole boulders, was investigated for the suitability of an environment-friendly product by evaluating of the water purification ability. The contamination removal rates of BOD, TOC, T-N, and T-P in stagnant water tank were 70.6, 67.0, 57.7, and 50.6%, respectively. Also for the non-point source pollution with the inflow and the outflow, the removal rates of Zn, Pb, BOD, and COD were 99.9, 90.0, 69.2, and 33.5%, respectively. The performance of the heavy metal contamination removal for the porous zeolite showed better than that of stagnant system. Therefore, it is expected that the installation of the porous zeolite concrete can play a role as an eco-friendly products by its high contamination removal.
For the efficient design of baffled Powdered activated carbon(PAC) contractor, which has been widely used in water treatment plant(WTP) against the algae-related odor problems, a CFD(computational fluid dynamics) program was applied. In order to verify the performance of FLOW-3D program, the previously reported results of tracer tests from a pilot-scale PAC contractor(working volume of 288 liters) were compared to those from FLOW 3D. The results of FLOW-3D simulation were very similar to those from tracer tests conducted with the Pilot-scale PAC contactor. On the other hand, the hydrodynamic characteristics of baffled contractor in the P-WTP were simulated by using FLOW-3D. Simulation results on the distribution of PAC particles showed that there are some stagnant parts in the back side of baffles in which PAC Particles are not present. These stagnant parts might decrease the adsorption capacity of PAC particles. When the baffles were changed to maze-type intra-basin baffling, PAC particles were evenly distributed and the amount of stagnant parts reduced. In conclusion, it is anticipated that FLOW-3D simulation could be a viab1e tool for analyzing the hydrodynamic characteristics of structures used in drinking water treatment plant.
Removal rates of residual organic phosphorous pesticides (chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion) in Perilla leaves by various washing methods were determined. The removal rates using stagnant tap water were 20.05 and 17.70% for chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, whereas 44.28 and 39.10% using flowing tap water, and 19.14 and 15.43% using activated carbon-added stagnant tap water, respectively. Activated carbon-added flowing stagnant tap water removed 25.29 and 15.43% of chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, and removal rates were 53.51 and 50.62% with alkaline solution and 30.25 and 28.09% with acidic solution, respectively. With neutral detergent solution, removal rates were 81.52 and 76.56% for chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, respectively. Results revealed washing method using neutral detergent solution was most effective for removing residual pesticides.
This study was conducted to investigate the variation of chemical components in stagnant water under different mulching amount of barley straw after combine harvesting and the effect of stagnent water on the germinatidn and seedling elongation at early growth stage in rice. pH was lower in barley straw mulching than non-mulching and decreased with increasing of mulched barley straw but was not different among treatments in stagnant water at 15 days after flooding. Dissolved oxygen decreased with the increasing of mulched barley straw and increased with the passing of time, while saline content increased with the increasing of mulched barley straw, showing significant difference among treatments, was peaked at 15 days after flooding and thereafter, decreased. NH4-N was higher 5 days after flooding with thicker barley straw mulching but was not different at 10 days. N $O_3$-N increased up to 10 to 15 days after flooding and increased with thicker barley straw mulching. Water soluble phosphorus and cation content ( $K^{+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$)were higher in thicker barley straw mulching and peaked at 10 and 15 days after flooding. Germination rate was decreased by thicker straw mulching and was high in order of medium late, medium and early maturing rice variety. Keumobyeo, Gancheokbyeo, Ilpumbyeo, Dongjinbyeo and Gyehwabyeo showed higher germination rate. Seedling elongation at early growth stage was poorer with increasing of barley. straw mulching. Ilpumbyeo had good seedling elongation in one time amount of barley straw mulching and Shinunbongbyeo, Unjangbyeo, Nonganbyeo and Dongjinbyeo had poorer, in two times.mes.
The objective of this study was to evaluate survival rate and fish movement (migration) using a tagging approach of passive integrated transponder (PIT) in Juksan Weir, which was constructed as a four major river restoration projects. For this study, survival rates of each fish species and the mobility of fish individuals were analyzed during 2 weeks by the insertion of PIT tags to various fish species in the laboratory. According to tagging tests in the laboratory, the survival rate 37.5% (30 survivals of 80 individuals) after the insertion of PIT tags. The survival rate of Carassius auratus and Hemibarbus labeo was 100% and 80% after the insertion of the tags, respectively, whereas it was only 13.3% for Zacco platypus. In the field experiments of Juksan Weir, 6 species and 157 individuals from 8 species (563 individuals) were detected in the fixed automatic data-logging system, indicating a detection rate of 27.9% in the fishway of Juksan Weir. In the meantime, some species with no or low detection rates in the fixed automatic data-logging system were turn out to be stagnant-type species, which prefer stagnant or standing water to live.

Experimental investigation have been made to study the double-diffusive nature of convection of an initially stratified salt-water solution heated from below in a cylindrical cavity. The objective is to examine the process of mixed-layer formation, the flow phenomena, the heat transfer characteristics, and temperature and concentration distribution according to the changes in the effective Rayleigh number based on the reference height which represents the relation of temperature and concentration gradient. The types of initially formed flow pattern are categorized in three regimes depending on the effective Rayleigh number ; stagnant flow regime, single mixed-layer flow regime and successively formed multiple mixed-layer flow regime. The temperature and concentration profiles are both uniform in each layer due to convective mixing in the layered flow regime, but both linear in stagnant flow regime and single mixed-layer flow regime. At the interface between adjacent layers, the temperature changes smoothly but the concentration changes rapidly. The layers expand by diffusion of concentration through the interface along with its random fluctuation.

The behavior of a plane buoyant jet within the zone of flow establishment(ZFE) which is discharged vertically upward into a stagnant uniform environment, is analyzed by the integral equations of mass, momentum and tracer conservation. The analysis includes the spreading ratio with Froude number and geometry of the potential core of ZFE and the length of ZFE. The central velocity at the end of ZFE is found to be influenced significantly by buoyancy, especially at low discharge Froude number. The results provide the necessary initial conditions for the investigation of the zone of established flow.
