Fasteners are used to join the various electronic products and machines. So, the quality and reliability of the fastener are strongly requested. In this study, the analyses of the multi-stage cold forging of TORX screws for storage parts are carried out. In manufacturing of TORX screws, crack and folding defects are observed. Therefore, the analysis is focused on the prediction of the defects. Based on the analysis results, the upper die and process conditions are redesigned to reduce the defects. The upper die shape for preform forming is redesigned to prevent folding and sharp shape change. The Cockroft-Latham damage criterion is introduced to predict the crack initiation. Analysis results shows that the maximum Cockroft-Latham damage value is decreased by 40% in the forming using the modified upper die.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the failure modes of an auto transfer switch (ATS), determine the most common failure mechanisms, and iterate the design to improve reliability. Methods: We carried out failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) to determine the failure modes and mechanisms. We identified the parts or modules that required improvement via two-stage quality function deployment based on FMEA, and improvements to reliability were monitored using the Gomperz growth model. Results: The main failure modes of the ATS were damage to, and deformation of, the stator / movable element due to repetitive movements. Five iterations of design modification were carried out, and the mean time to failure (MTTF) increased to 14,539 cycles, corresponding to 85% of the target MTTF. The Gompertz growth model indicates that the 10th iteration of design modification is expected to achieve the target MTTF. Conclusion: We improved the reliability of mechanical parts via failure mode analysis, and characterized the iterative improvements in the MTTF using the Gompertz growth model.

In this study, the performance of the NHPP software reliability model with exponential distribution (Exponential Basic, Inverse Exponential, Lindley, Rayleigh) characteristics was comparatively analyzed, and based on this, the optimal reliability model was also presented. To analyze the software failure phenomenon, the failure time data collected during system operation was used, and the parameter estimation was solved by applying the maximum likelihood estimation method (MLE). Through various comparative analysis (mean square error analysis, true value predictive power analysis of average value function, strength function evaluation, and reliability evaluation applied with mission time), it was found that the Lindley model was an efficient model with the best performance. Through this study, the reliability performance of the distribution with the characteristic of the exponential form, which has no existing research case, was newly identified, and through this, basic design data that software developers could use in the initial stage can be presented.

Recently, the R&D of weapon systems has been strengthened in terms of economic cost management throughout the entire life cycle from performance. This study proposes the method for setting the optimal maintenance concept based on RAM-C in weapon system acquisition stage by calculating the operation & maintenance cost as well as reliability, availability, and maintainability. First, we design a simulation model for analysis of weapon system logistic supportability. In addition, information such as weapon system Part Breakdown Structure, operation & maintenance system, cost, and etc for simulation analysis, is applied. Based on the obtained simulation results, the optimal plan is selected among alternatives designed with various maintenance concepts through normalization and weight setting. It is expected to be of technical help in the application of RAM-C in the weapon system acquisition stage.

This paper focuses on techniques of improving refinery reliability, availability, and profitability. Our team developed a corrosion control document(CCD) for processing of the crude distillation unit(CDU). Recent study shows the loss due to corrosion in US is around $276 billion. It's a big concern for both managers and engineers of refinery industry. The CCD consists of numerous parts namely damage mechanism(DM), design data, critical reliability variable(CRV), guidelines, etc. The first step in the development of CCD is to build material selection diagram(MSD). Damage mechanisms affecting equipments and process need to be chosen carefully based on API 571. The selected nine DM from API 571 are (1) creep/stress rupture, (2) fuel ash corrosion, (3) oxidation, (4) high temperature sulfidation, (5) naphthenic acid corrosion, (6) hydrochloric acid(HCL) corrosion, (7) ammonium chloride(salt) corrosion, (8) wet $H_2S$ corrosion, and (9) ammonia stress corrosion cracking. Each DM related to corrosion of CDU process was selected by design data, P&ID, PFD, corrosion loop, flow of process, equipment's history, and experience. Operating variables affecting severity of DM are selected in initial stage of CRV. We propose the guidelines for reliability of equipments based on CRV. The CCD has been developed on the basis of the corrosion control in refinery industry. It also improves the safety of refinery process and reduces the cost of corrosion greatly.
To assess the risk of nuclear power plant operation and to determine the risk impact of digital systems, there is a need to quantitatively assess the reliability of the digital systems in a justifiable manner. The Probabilistic Risk Analysis (PRA) is a tool which can reveal shortcomings of the NPP design in general and PRA analysts have not had sufficient guiding principles in modelling particular digital components malfunctions. Currently digital I&C systems are mostly analyzed simply and conventionally in PRA, based on failure mode and effects analysis and fault tree modelling. More dynamic approaches are still in the trial stage and can be difficult to apply in full scale PRA-models. As basic events CPU failures, application software failures and common cause failures (CCF) between identical components are modelled. The primary goal is to model dependencies. However, it is not clear which failure modes or system parts CCF:s should be postulated for. A clear distinction can be made between the treatment of protection and control systems. There is a general consensus that protection systems shall be included in PRA, while control systems can be treated in a limited manner. OECD/NEA CSNI Working Group on Risk Assessment (WGRisk) has set up a task group, called DIGREL, to develop taxonomy of failure modes of digital components for the purposes of PRA. The taxonomy is aimed to be the basis of future modelling and quantification efforts. It will also help to define a structure for data collection and to review PRA studies.
In recent years, It is required to verify software reliability according to DO-178, which announced by radio technical commission for aeronautics (RTCA) and recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), for civil aircraft developed or intended to fly in the United States or Europe. This is because the reliance on software in each field is deepening, and the efforts for improvement of software reliability have been made first in civil aviation field where economic and social impacts are catastrophic in the event of an accident. In this paper, we have identified some issues to be considered for requirements-based reliability verification required by DO-178 to improve software reliability and present the major elements of the present weapon system acquisition procedure of DAPA for each stage. In addition, we analyzed the results of applying the identified main check factors to a domestic aircraft development project based on the information accumulated in overseas aircraft development projects. As a result, we have shown that it is possible to verify requirements-based software reliability according to DO-178 by adding key checkpoints to the current weapon system acquisition procedure and providing objective inspection criteria.

For efficient water management in the Ara River during the flood season, applicability of flood simulation model in the ungaged Gulpo watershed has been tested. In the Gulpo River watershed, fundamental hydrologic data such as water level and flowrates are very limited and selection of the reliable hydrologic parameters are very important for model application. This study tested reliability of parameters estimated using the empirical equation based on the HEC-HMS runoff simulation. Also coupled with HEC-RAS hydraulic routing model, simulated flowrates from HEC-HMS has been compared with the observed water levels collected at the upstream and downstream of the Gyulhyun Weir station during the flood event in 2010. Based on this information, stage-discharge curve has been developed and its reliability has been tested for flood event in 2011.
Currently, BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaic) design technology lacks analysis function at the planning stage, and there is a lack of understanding and reliability of BIPV design method and system for building designers. To design and consider various building integrated solar design alternatives, the color of building integrated solar is often monotonous or does not match the design direction of the building. In this study, architectural designers can select various color modules in the planning and design process of the building and analyze the characteristics of color module solar cells and compare and analyze the actual solar radiation and predicted solar radiation in Republic ofKorea Seoul to reduce the confusion of design methods. By building a BIM design integrated system that can prove the quality of the building and analyze the shading analysis and power generation performance architecturally, it can improve the reliability of color module solar cell applicability that can express aesthetics in buildings and the predicted solar power generation capacity of each region. In the initial design stage, based on the empirical data of the BIPV system, it is possible to analyze the power generation performance for each installation angle and installation direction by analyzing the surrounding environment and the installation area, and accurately determine the appropriateness of the design accordingly.
