In this research, the influence of the laminate stacking sequence on thermal stress distribution in symmetric composite plates with a quasi-square cutout subjected to uniform heat flux is examined analytically using the complex variable technique. The analytical solution is obtained based on the thermo-elastic theory and the Lekhnitskii's method. Furthermore, by employing a suitable mapping function, the solution of symmetric laminates containing a circular cutout is extended to the quasi-square cutout. The effect of important parameters including the stacking sequence of laminates, the angular position, the bluntness, the aspect ratio of cutout, the flux angle and the composite material are examined on the thermal stress distribution. It is found out that the circular shape for cutout may not necessarily be the optimum geometry for all stacking sequences. The finite element analysis results are used to validate the analytical solution.
In this paper the radial stiffness associated with stacking sequence effects, and the dimensional stability issue associated with thermally induced surface deformation in quasi-isotropic laminates due to the effect of stacking sequence and additional resin layer technique, are numerically investigated. Finally, the influence of surface resin layer techniques for fiber print-through mitigation in a composite mirror is tested for evaluation of surface accuracy across varying thermal conditions.
This paper deals with optimal stacking sequence design of laminate composite structures. The stacking sequence optimisation of laminate composites is formulated as a combinatorial problem and is solved using Simulated Annealing (SA), an algorithm devised based on inspiration of physical process of annealing of solids. The combinatorial constraints are handled using a correction strategy. The SA algorithm is strengthened by embedding Tabu search in order to prevent recycling of recently visited solutions and the resulting algorithm is referred to as tabu embedded simulated Annealing (TSA) algorithm. Computational performance of the proposed TSA algorithm is enhanced through cache-fetch implementation. Numerical experiments have been conducted by considering rectangular composite panels and composite cylindrical shell with different ply numbers and orientations. Numerical studies indicate that the TSA algorithm is quite effective in providing practical designs for lay-up sequence optimisation of laminate composites. The effect of various neighbourhood search algorithms on the convergence characteristics of TSA algorithm is investigated. The sensitiveness of the proposed optimisation algorithm for various parameter settings in simulated annealing is explored through parametric studies. Later, the TSA algorithm is employed for multi-criteria optimisation of hybrid composite cylinders for simultaneously optimising cost as well as weight with constraint on buckling load. The two objectives are initially considered individually and later collectively to solve as a multi-criteria optimisation problem. Finally, the computational efficiency of the TSA based stacking sequence optimisation algorithm has been compared with the genetic algorithm and found to be superior in performance.

It is considered that the application of advanced composite materials to the prostheses for the disables is important to improve their bio-mechanical performance. Particularly, energy storing foot prosthesis is mostly important to restore gait ability of the disables with low-extremity amputation since it could provide propulsion at terminal stance enhancing the disables ability to walk long distance even run and jump. Therefore, the energy storing spring of Prosthetic foot keel under cyclic bending moment use mainly of high strength glass fiber reinforced plastic. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the stacking sequence effect using the delamination growth rate(dA$_{D}$/dN) of energy storing spring in glass fiber reinforced plastic under cyclic bending moment. The test results indicated that the shape of delamination zone depends on stacking sequence in GFRP laminates. Delamination area(A$_{D}$) turns out that variable types with the contour increased non-linearly toward the damage zones.nes.

The CFRP composite has a lot of merits such as mechanical characteristic, light and thermal resistance. For these merits, CFRP is applied to so many industrial area. In order to use the composite materials in the aircraft structures or machine elements, accurate surfaces for bearing mounting or joints must be provided, which require precise, machining. In this study, the specimens differentiating the stacking sequence of 5kinds were used. When drilling the carbon fiber reinforced plastics, it was checked on whether the stacking sequence reached any effect on the cutting force. Also relationship between the drill diameter is examined from the drilling experiment, which is the drilling of Fabric, Unidirectional specimen with ∅6mm, ∅10mm, ∅12mm cemented carbide drill. Considering cutting force and drilling diameter, the results are analyzed.
This paper presents stacking sequence optimization of laminated angle-ply cylindrical panel based on natural frequency. Finite element method (FEM) is used to obtain the vibration characteristic of an anisotropic panel using the first order shear deformation theory(FSDT) and genetic algorithm (GA) is used to obtain the optimal stacking sequence of the layers. Cylindrical panel has finite length and arbitrary boundary conditions. The thicknesses of the layers are assumed constant and their angles are specified as design variables. The effect of the number of plies and boundary conditions in the fitness function is considered. Numerical examples are presented for four, six and eight layered anisotropic cylindrical panels.

This study aims to examine an effect of stacking sequence and curvature on the penetration characteristic of a composite laminated shell. For the purpose, we manufactured specimens with different stacking sequences and curvatures, and conducted a penetration test using an air-gun. To examine an influence according to stacking sequence, as flat plate and curvature specimen had more plies, their critical penetration energy was higher, Critical penetration energies of specimen A and C with less interfaces somewhat higher than those of B and D with more interfaces. The reason that with less interfaces, critical penetration energy was higher is pre-impact bending stiffness of composite laminated shell with less interfaces was lower than that of laminated shell with more interfaces, but bending stiffness after impact was higher. And it is because interface, the weakest part of the composite laminated shell, was influenced by transverse impact. As curvature increases, critical penetration energy increases linearly. It is because as curvature increases, resistance to in-plane deformation as well as bending deformation increases, which need higher critical penetration energy. Patterns of cracks caused by penetration of composite laminated shells include interlaminar crack, intralaminar crack, and laminar fracture. A 0$^{\circ}$ply laminar had a matrix crack, a 90$^{\circ}$ply laminar had intralaminar crack and laminar fracture, and interface between 0$^{\circ}$and 90$^{\circ}$laminar had a interlaminar crack. We examined crack length and delamination area through a penetration test. For the specimen A and C with 2 interface, the longest circumferential direction crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the first interface from the impact point. For the specimen B and D with 4 interface, the longest crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the third interface from the impact point.

In this study, the effect of laminate thickness on the compressive behaviour of composite materials was investigated through systematic experimental work using the stacking sequences, [04]ns, [45/0/-45/90]ns and [45n/0n/-45n/90n]s (n = 2 to 8). The stacking sequence effects on failure strength of multidirectional laminates were examined. For this purpose, two different scaling techniques were used; (1) ply-level technique [45n/0n/-45n/90n]s and (2) sub laminate level technique [45/0/-45/90]ns. An apparent thickness effect existed in the lay-up with blocked plies, i.e. unidirectional specimens $([0_4]ns)$ and ply-level scaled multidirectional specimens ([45n/0n/-45n/90n]s). From the investigation of the stacking sequence effect, the strength values obtained from the sub laminate level scaled specimens were slightly higher than those obtained from the ply level scaled specimens. The measured failure strengths were compared with the predicted values
This paper presents the strengthening of tubular joint by wrapping Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP). In this study, total number of layers, stacking sequence and length of wrapping are the different parameters involved when fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) composites are used for strengthening. For this, parameters where varied and results were compared with the reference joint. The best stacking sequence was identified which has the highest value in ultimate load with lesser deflections. For determining the best stacking sequence, numerical investigation was performed on CFRP composites; length of wrapping and number of layers were fixed. Later, the studies were focused on CFRP and GFRP strengthened joint by varying the total number of layers and length of wrapping. An attempt was done to propose a parametric equation from multiple regression analysis, which can be used for CFRP strengthened joints. Hashin failure criteria was used to check the failure of composites. Results revealed that FRP was having a greater influence in the load bearing capacity of joints, and in reducing the deflections and stresses of joint under axial compressive loads. It was also seen that, CFRP was far better than GFRP in reducing the stresses and deflection.
This paper demonstrates the analyses of the interlaminar shear stress of laminated composite plates subjected to transversely impact. For this purpose, a plate finite element model based on the higher order shear deformation plate theory in conjunction with static contact laws is developed. Test materials were CFRP with cross-ply laminate $[O_4/{\theta}_4]_S$, $[90_4/{\theta}_4]_S$ stacking sequences and angle-ply laminate $[{\theta}_4/-{\theta}_4]_S$, $[{\theta}_4/-{\theta}_4]_S$ stacking deguences with $2^t{\times}40^w{\times}100^l(mm)$ dimension. As a result, stacking seguence and fiber orientation were found to have a significant effect on the interlaminar stresses in composite laminates.
