  • A stack-ring configuration is proposed for designing a dual-band circularly polarized (CP) antenna. Each ring generates different resonant frequencies. A good CP performance at both resonant frequencies is achieved by adjusting the relative distance between the two rings. The two operating bands are separated with a small frequency ratio of 1.07. Measured results show that radiation patterns with good CP characteristics are obtained at the two resonant frequencies.

  • The structural methods used to protect coastal erosion are usually very expensive in construction as well as in spending on maintaining the structures from damage. Those structures like embankments, breakwaters, jetties etc. are commonly constructed with concretes (rigid methods) to protect coastal erosion. But those rigid methods are not effective always, because the wave energy and impact force on the structures could not be effectively reduced by those methods. For avoiding sediment erosion on coastal areas by the way of reducing wave energy, a flexible breakwater is introduced which will reduce energy and protect coastline economically and environmentally. The flexible device is a combination of flexible wire nets and stack of rings made of used vehicle tires and soft blades on surfaces. This flexible wire net is placed in between two stacks of rings. The stack of rings is mainly used to hold the flexible wire nets and the flexible wire net is mainly used to reduce wave energy and helps to deposit sediments in coastal area. For a field experiment study, the above-mentioned flexible breakwater of coastal protection has been set up at the Shuang-Chun coastal area in Tainan County since June 10, 2009. The length of the flexible device is 50.0 meters and the height is 2.0 meters. The function of the device has been examined by Typhoon Linfa during June 19~22, 2009 and by Typhoon Morakot during August 6~10, 2009. The result shows that the flexible breakwater has effectively trapped sediments and let them deposit on coastal. The depth of sediment deposition around the device was about 0.5 to 0.8 meters.

  • We consider the traffic grooming problem for the design of SONET/WDM(Synchronous Optical NETwork/Wavelength Division Multiplexing) ring networks. Given a physical network with ring topology and a set of traffic demands between pairs of nodes, we are to obtain a stack of rings with the objective of minimizing the number of ADMs installed at the nodes. This problem arises when a single ring capacity is not large enough to accommodate all the demands. As a solution method, an efficient algorithm based on the branch-and-price approach has been reported in the literature for the problem in which only unidirecional path switched ring (UPSR) was considered. In this study, we suggest integer programming models and the algorithms based on the same approach as the above one, considering two-fiber bidirectional line switched ring(BLSR/2), and BLSR/4 additionally. Using the results, we compare the number of required ADMs for all types of the ring architecture.

  • An underwater speaker was developed for use as an acoustic deterrent device that transmits acoustic energy through the water omnidirectionally over a broadband frequency range to eliminate marine mammal attacks and to prevent physical damage to the inshore and coastal fishing grounds of Korea. The underwater speaker was constructed of two vibration caps machined from 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and a stack of PZ 26 piezoelectric ceramic rings (Ferroperm Piezoceramics A/S) connected mechanically in series and electrically in parallel. The performance characteristics of the underwater speaker were measured and analyzed in an experimental water tank of $5\;m{\times}5\;m{\times}6\;m$. The peak transmitting voltage response (TVR) was measured at 11.16 kHz with 163.45 dB re $1\;{\mu}Pa$/V at 1m. The underwater speaker showed a near omnidirectional beam pattern at the peak TVR resonance frequency. The usable frequency range was 4-25 kHz with a lower TVR limit of approximately 140 dB. We conclude that this underwater speaker could be satisfactorily used as an acoustic deterrent device against marine mammals, particularly the bottlenose dolphin, to protect catches and fishing grounds as well as the mammals themselves, for example, by keeping them away from fishing gear and/or vessels.

  • In this paper, a new data frame structure for wavelength routing in optical ring access network(ORAN) is designed and the functions of each field in the frame are defined. In addition, the IP packet transmission to the network layer corresponding to the newly proposed structure of the protocol stack is newly presented. Tha data transmission protocol design techniques of ORAN was proposed. IP packet and broadcasting packet transmission within the sub-network, and the IP packet transmission to other sub-network was shown through the process illustration. In the process, the encapsulation and framing process of the wavelength information to routing has been described in detail. And each step takes place in a packet transfer process is demonstrated. A ring type optical access network protocol is not yet research field. ORAN data transfer protocol to send/receive module structure of a subscriber node and a control node of the two rings which analyzed the results are shown. The high-speed Internet solution is proposed that by using wavelength routing the packet transport protocol for ORAN is designed.
