  • The ceramic composite membrane was synthesized by thermal oxidation after evaporation of Al on the support prepared by slip casting process. Oxidation was performed at $700^{\circ}C$ and 80$0^{\circ}C$ under dry oxygen atmosphere. It was considered as optimum oxidation condition that the membrane showed a knudsen behaviro. A further oxidation resulted in an increase of gas permeability because top layer became densified. Then, a multi-layered composite membrane was synthesized through a sol-gel method, evaporation and thermal oxidation of Al coating processes. While the membrane was thermally stable up to 80$0^{\circ}C$, gas permeability was rapidly decreased even at a slight amount of deposition of Al.

  • The tadpole H-ferritin produced in E. coli was purified and its molecular properties were investigated to obtain information about the contribution of the H-subunit in the reaction of iron core formation. All the expressed subunits were assembled into complete holoprotein in vitro, presumably 24-mer, and the protein was heat-stable. Electron microscopy revealed that the recombinant ferritin forms spherically and contains iron core. No difference was observed in the absorption spectrum of the expressed protein compared to that of the natural ferritin. The Ouchterlony double diffusion of the expressed protein showed that the H-chain ferritin shares an antigenic determinant with natural tadpole ferritin. Rabbit anti-horse spleen ferritin discriminated the H-ferritin from natural ferritin. The rate of ferritin formation by the recombinant H-chain apoferritin was determined to be higher than that shown by natural tadpole ferritin, which consists of H, M and L-subunits. This phenomenon may be caused by the absence of M and L-subunits in the recombinant H-chain apoferritin.

  • The solid state reaction of Mo/Si multilayer thin films produced by RF magnetron sputtering technique was examine dusing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and x-ray diffraction, and explained in view of two concepts, effective drivig force and effective heat of formation. In constant scanning rate DSC, there were two exothermic peks which corresponded to the formation of h-MoSi2 and t-MoSi2 , respectively. The activation energyfor theformation of h-MoSi2 was 1.5eV , and that of t-MoSi2 was 7.8eV. Nucleation wa stherate controlling mechanism for each of the silicide formation. Amorphous phase was not formed , which was consistent withtheprediction by the concept of effective driving force. h-MoSi2 the first crystalline phase, was considered to have lower interfacial free energy than t-MoSi2 and by increasing temperature it was transformed into more stable t-MoSi2.

  • A vortex sheet is susceptible to the Kelvin-Helmhotz instability, which leads to a singularity at finite time. The vortex blob model provided a regularization for the motion of vortex sheets in an inviscid fluid. In this paper, we consider the blob model for viscous vortex sheets and present a linear stability analysis for regularized sheets. We show that the diffusing viscous vortex sheet is unstable to small perturbations, regardless of the regularization, but the viscous sheet in the sharp limit becomes stable, when the regularization is applied. Both the regularization parameter and viscosity damp the growth rate of the sharp viscous vortex sheet for large wavenumbers, but the regularization parameter gives more significant effects than viscosity.

  • Antimicrobial activity of various extracts of Xanthium strumarium L. was tested against 25 strains of bacteria, yeast and fungus. The crude ethylacetate extract exhibited strong growth inhibition to the tested strains with the exception of partial Gram-negative bacteria. The property of antimicrobial compound was very stable under heat treatment at $120^{\circ}C$, but it was unstable in acid (pH 3.0) and alkali (pH 10.0) treatment. The antimicrobial compounds were purified by boiling water extraction, ethylacetate extraction, charcoal column chromatography, silica gel column chro- matography and reverse phase HPLC. The purified compound A and B were detected in a single peak (each above 98% purity) through the HPLC analysis. The compound A and B showed a strong growth inhibition against Gram-negative and positive bacteria in the agar diffusion method. When tested by the FDA method using the esterase, compound A mainly inhibited the growth of bacteria and compound B showed the growth inhibition of both bacteria and yeasts.

  • To investigate transition region in welded overlay relating to disbonding crack, the effect of vanadium addition on disbonding of Cr-Mo steels overlay welded with austenitic stainless steel was studied. V modified Cr-Mo steels have a higher resistance to disbonding than V free Cr-Mo steel. One reason is due to the fact that fine vanadium carbide precipated in base metal traps hydrogen and thus decreases the susceptibility to the disbonding. The second is related to the higher stability of the vanadium and stable carbides formed during PWHT, in which the carbon diffusion to the interface is lower than for V free Cr-Mo steel. Decreasing the carbon content at the interface of the weld overlay shows good resistance to the disbonding. Hence, it is important to control the carbon content at the interface of the weld overlay.

  • The highest diffraction efficiency(DE) value after illumination and post-curing of photopolymer films were obtained at the $SeO_2$/Acrylamide(AA) Ratios of AA 3.0 g, $SeO_2$ 1.0g and the DE's were stable values of over 90%. By the addition of $SeO_2$, the maximum DE at the initial stage of illumination was reached at 300 seconds, which suggests $SeO_2$ slows down the photopolymerization of AA, which enhances the maximum DE value by giving more migration time. DE variation curve for the optimum composition during extended-time illumination of 9,000 seconds resembles a sine curve due to the combination of the monomer diffusion and the photopolymerization, and the photopolymer film expanded by about 8% after photopolymerization due to monomer migration.

  • To take advantage of Ti-polycide, when it is contacted with both n+ and p+ active area of silicon, the effects of BF$_2$ on the formation of Ti-silicide were investigated with RTA temperature and dopant concentration. The intermediate phase C49 TiSi$_2$ appeared at $650^{\circ}C$ and the stable phase C54 TiSi2 was formed at $700^{\circ}C$. And the formation of Ti-silicide was hindered by BF$_2$ doping and this trend was decreased with increasing temperature. The out-diffusion phenomena of BF$_2$ into Ti silicide were not observed. And significantly, the native oxide was a chief factor preventing the formation of Ti-silicides.

  • In oxide matrix-SiC(W) composites, instability and glassy phase formation due to oxidation at the high temperature and the diffusion of Si, respectively, cause brittle fracture and low reliability for ceramic materials. The mode of contribution in each mechanisms induced by matrix-whisker debonding, varies with the morphology of matrix-whisker interfaces. This work has described the dispersion behaviours and stabilization mechanisms in slip systems, and multiple toughening mechanisms by dint of two second phase different from each other when spherical ZrO2 and chemically stable Al2O3(W) is respectively added in Al2O3 matrix. To obtain complexshaped components, slip casted bodies were sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$, 2hrs up to 98~99% R.D.. Multiple toughening mechanisms in comparison with theories reported until now will be discussed as a result of the phase analysis of ZrO2 by athermal behaviours and microstructural characterizations as well as measured mechanical properties.

  • Poly(hydroxamic acid) resin beads were prepared and complexed with various metal ions. We used IR spectroscopy to investigate the structure of metal complex. It proved that the products formed by introduction of metal ions gave stable and colored complex. It was found that the resin bead as synthesized would be a good column packing material for continuous extraction. Energy dispersive spectroscopy was use to study the distribution of metal ions in the resin matrix. It could be tentatively concluded that adsorption and diffusion of metal ions in the chelating resins mainly depended on the loading of the resin matrix which indicated interacting sites with metal ions.
