  • We have investigated the EO characteristics generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with photoalignment method on three kinds of photopolymer surfaces using polymer substrates. The LC homogeneous alignment were observed on the PMI3CA (N-(phenyl)maleimide with 3-carbon chain cinnamoyl group) and PMIF (N-(phenyl)maleimide including fluoro cinnamoyl group). However, the homeotropic alignment on the PMI5CA(N-(phenyl)maleimide with 5-carbon chain cinnamoyl group) was obtained. Also, EO characteristics of the flexible photoaligned TN-LCD using PMIF surface are better than that of the flexible TN-LCD using PMI3CA surface. Also, the stable EO performances of flexible photoaligned VA-LCD using the PMI5CA surface was observed.

  • Stability analysis of rocky embankment slopes is done by both the limit equilibrium method and the finite difference method. The height or the rocky embankment is approximately 40 m and the side slope is 1 vertical to 1.5 horizontal. The cohesion and internal friction angle of rock debris are assumed zero and 43$^{\circ}$, respectively. For finite difference analysis, strength reduction method is used to calculate the saft factor of the slope. As a result, the safety factor of the slope is discovered to be 1.4 by using either methods. Considering that the design criteria of the safety factor is 1.3, it can be judged that the rock fragments embankment slope is in a stable state.

  • Powder type Ag system insert metals were manufactured by ball milling process. The variables of milling process such as milling media, revolution speed and powder/ball weight ratio were constant except the milling time. The milling times were selected for 24, 48 and 72 hours. The insert metals made by milling process were evaluated by performing scanning electron microscope, x-ray and DSC(differential scanning calorimetry) analysis, and further in terms of wettability test. The selected insert metals that have the good characteristics compared to commercial insert metals were applied to make the brazed joints of the steel/steel and the steel/WC superhard particles. The characterizations of those brazed joints were also conducted by microstructural observations, shear tensile tests and microhardness measurements. The results indicated that milling time of 48 hours for making powder type insert metals was the best condition showing the small amount of oxides residue, low wetting angle and stable microstructure. The brazed joints that applied the 48 hours milled insert metal were very sound condition indicating the shear tensile value of $2.29{\times}102$ MPa and the microhardness of 138VHN. Further, the amount of the porosity was appeared to be lower than that of the commercial insert metals.

  • Recently, bridges have been momenttous as not only regarding function but also concerning aesthetics. However, when beauty is considered in the bridge, it is also essential that stability and economics be considered. Besides, when considering stability, an arch bridge is one of the most stable structures. The most important element is a rise ratio when regarding beauty and economics of arch bridges. The effect of dead load and DB24 load have been considered to decide proper rise ratio. Therefore, in this study, examined the value of moment, displacement and member forces, in the variation of the rise ratio of arch bridges. The most optimum shape of Nielsen arch bridges has determined by analyzing member forces, moments and displacement with parameters of rise ratio and angle of vertical members. By comparison between values, the hanger types have been also considered to derive the optimum shape of Nielsen arch bridge.

  • In this research a controller based on velocity estimator for a Wheeled Inverted Pendulum (WIP) is designed and various numerical simulation studies are carried out. The WIP has stable and unstable equivalent points. To Keep the unstable equilibrium point, a controller should control carefully the wheels persistently. There are angle, angular velocity, displacement, and velocity of the WIP for controller inputs. The velocity is obtained by differentiating the encoder signals from the motor and is subject to the resolution of the encoder. An improved velocity detection method is proposed based on low resolution encoder and velocity estimator. Various numerical simulations are carried out for showing the validation of the velocity estimator in case of the inclined road condition.

  • A realization for image distortion correction processing system with DSP processor is presented in this paper. The image distortion correcting algorithm is realized by DSP processor for focusing on more real time processing than image quality. The lens and camera distortion coefficients are processed by the Lookup Tables and the correcting algorithm is applied to reverse mapping method for geometrical transform. The system experimentation results in the processing time about 31.3 msec $720{\times}480$ wide range image, and the image is stable and spontaneous to be about 8.3% average PSNR variation with changing a wide angle.

  • In order to obtain ultra-high resolution MRI images, research and development of 11 T or higher superconducting magnets have been actively conducted in the world, recently. The high-temperature superconductor (HTS), first discovered in 1986, was very limited in industrial application until mid-2010, despite its high critical current characteristics in the high magnetic field compared to the low-temperature superconductor. This is because HTS magnets were unable to operate stably due to the thermal damage when a quench occurred. With the introduction of no-insulation (NI) HTS magnet winding technology that does not burn electrically, it could be expected that the HTS magnets are dramatically reduced in weight, volume, and cost. In this paper, a 6 T-class NI HTS magnet for basic characteristic analysis was designed, and a distributed equivalent circuit model of the NI coils was configured to analyze the charging current characteristics caused by excitation current, and the charge delay phenomenon and loss were predicted through the development of a simulation model. Additionally, the critical current of the NI HTS magnets was estimated, considering the magnetic field, its angle and temperature with a given current. The loss due to charging delay characteristics was analyzed and the result was shown. It is meaningful to obtain detailed operation technology to secure a stable operation protocol for a 6T NI HTS magnet which is actually manufactured.

  • Surfaces with various roughnesses were produced through laser processing, and the anisotropy and hydrophobicity of the surfaces were examined in the context of the microstructures. The fine particles transferred to the glass surface exhibited different sizes, and the roughness increased. Due to the change in the roughness, the liquid could not penetrate the space between the fine particles, and it was thus exposed to the air. We analyzed this phenomenon using the combined Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter models. Excessive fine particle formation on the substrate tended to increase the roughness and surface energy. The silver-glass-air contact analysis could clarify the mechanism of the reduction of the contact angle and differences in the metastable and stable states when the particles did not completely cover the glass substrate. The formation of microstructures with fine particles through the laser selective deposition led to the generation of an anisotropic surface as the water droplets diffused toward the glass substrate with a relatively high surface energy level.

  • The shoulder is less stable than other joints, making it easier to onset of various shoulder disorders. In addition, limited range of motion and pain in the shoulder due to shoulder disorders restricts daily life and social activities. The problem with exercise therapy can be reduced in exercise effect by causing boredom through simple repetition of motion, thus reducing the patient's willingness to participate. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a treatment method that can induce active participation of patients by developing devices capable of passive, active, and resistance exercise and serious game contents using them. Furthermore, sEMG was used to verify whether the rotational exercise in the horizontal and vertical using serious game contents helps the shoulder movement actually. The measured sEMG signal was classified as 5 phases according to the angle of rotation and calculated the mean integrated EMG. The mean integrated EMG for the experimental results was higher in all phases when rotational was performed compared to those when both horizontal and vertical rotational exercise remained initial posture, indicating an increase in muscle activity.

  • Objectives: Recently a modified high-submandibular approach (HSMA) has been introduced for treatment of condylar fracture. This approach involves an incision line close to the mandibular angle and transmasseteric transection, leading to a low incidence of facial palsy and allowing good visualization of the condyle area, especially the condylar neck and subcondyle positions. This study reports several cases managed with this modified HSMA technique for treating condylar fractures. Materials and Methods: Six cases of condylar fractures treated with modified HSMA technique were reviewed. Results: Three unilateral subcondylar fracture, 1 bilateral subcondylar fracture, 1 unilateral condylar neck fracture, 1 unlateral simultaneous condylar neck and subcondylar fracture cases were reviewed. All the cases were successfully treated without any major complication. Conclusion: Reduction, fixation, and osteosynthesis of condylar fractures via the modified HSMA technique enabled effective and stable treatment outcomes. Therefore, the described approach can be used especially for subcondylar and condylar neck fractures with minimal complications.
