  • Ssireum, the traditional Korean sport, is very popular at both amateur and professional levels. Ssireum players are prone to be obese which related to the chronic disease in their later life. The purpose of the study was to compare the anthropometric measurements, quality of diet, and blood parameters of Ssireum players with those of subjects who were matched body mass index, gender and age. Participants in the 3 groups, Ssireum players (SP, n=15), regular moderate exerciser (RME, n=15, >3 times /wk, >20 min/time) and intermittent light exerciser (ILE, n=14) groups. Anthropometric measurements included height, weight, fat mass (by Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry), lean body mass, triceps and thigh skin-fold thickness, mid-arm, waist, hip and thigh circumference. Dietary assessments were accomplished using 3-days food records, diet quality index (DQI), dietary variety score (DVS). Blood levels of lipids, leptin and insulin were analyzed. As a results lean body mass and mid-arm circumference were significantly higher in Ssireum players than those of other groups (p<0.01). Total body fat, trunk fat, abdominal skin fold thickness and waist-hip ratio were significantly lower in SP group than those of other groups (p<0.01). DVS were higher however, dietary quality was low in Ssireum players than in other groups. There were no differences among the 3 groups in regard to blood total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and glucose levels however, leptin level was low in Ssireum players. These results indicate that Ssireum players had significantly higher lean body mess and lower body fat when these were compared with regular moderate exerciser and intermittent light exerciser. Blood leptin levels of Ssireum players were low but blood lipid profiles were not significantly different.

Effects of Using Convergence Sports Massage on ssireum players' Recovery Heart Rate, Oxygen Uptake and Blood Lactate after Maximal Exercise (씨름선수의 최대운동 후 스포츠마시지 처치가 회복기 심박수, 산소섭취량 및 혈중젖산에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of sports massage in the recovery period after maximal exercise on heart rate(HR), oxygen uptake(OU), and blood lactate(BL) of ssireum players. The participants of this study were consisted of 24 ssireum players in university team(UT) and business team(BT). The first experiment had a rest recovery period for 20 minutes after the maximal exercise, and the second experiment gave a sports massage was performed the order of abdominal, waist and lower legs in a prone position for 20 minutes. The interaction effects of massage treatment and recovery period in HR showed a higher recovery ability in both the UT and BT when the massage treatment was given 10 minutes after recovery than when it was not given. The main effects of recovery period showed in all variables of HR, OU, and BL. The main effects of BL on massage treatment was significant low in both the UT and BT when the massage was given. And, the main effects of OU was significantly lower only in the BT. In conclusion, compared sports massage treatment on ssireum players after maximal exercise positively affected the recovery mechanism of HR, OU, and BL than the rest recovery method.

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the muscle activities and the characteristics of muscle recruiting patterns of upper trunk for Ssirum dutguri technique using three top-ranked elite Ssirum players. The EMG technique was used to record muscle activities of both right and left sides of latissimus dorsi, biceps brachii, and erector spinae. Six surface electrodes were placed on the surface of the selected muscles and one ground electrode was also attached on the back of neck(C7). One video camera was also used to record the Ssirum motion to define 4 events and 3 phases for further analysis. The raw EMG data were filtered with band pass filter (50-400 Hz) to remove artifacts and then low pass filtered (4 Hz) to find the linear envelope which resemble muscle tension curve. This filtered EMG data were normalized to MVIC for the purpose of comparion between the subjects. The results were indicated that each subject with different physical characteristics showed very different muscle activity patterns. Although Ssirum dutguri is considered as foot technique the player grasped opponent's satba(belt) with both hands when they play. Because of this reason, activities of upper trunk muscles were relatively high. However, direct comparison between upper and lower body muscles was not possible due to the lack of the data in present study. Interestingly, all threes subjects showed that erector spinae muscle activity was comparatively higher than those of latissimus dorsi and biceps brachii. This implies to reinforce back muscle as a routine of training to improve performance or to prevent back injury.

  • Adiponectin and Gut hormones(insulin, glucagon, ghrelin, PYY and GLP-1) are recently discovered peptides that are associated with lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, and control appetite. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of acute treadmill exercise(walking, 45min ; all-out running, 5min) on Adiponectin and gut hormones in high school ssireum player(light class, n=8; heavy class, n=8). From the experimental results, Adiponectin and ghrelin of light class were significantly higher than heavy class(p<.05), but there was no difference between pre and post exercise. Insulin level of heavy class was significantly higher than that of light class(p<.01) and no difference between pre and post exercise. Only glucagon significantly increased after exercise(p<.01), but no difference between classes. PYY and GLP-1 were no difference on classes and pre vs. post-exercise. The result of this study suggest that adiponectin, ghrelin and insulin were affected by body weight(light class vs. heavy class) and glucagon was affected by acute exercise.
