  • This paper presents a numerical study of pile force distribution in a pile group foundation subjected to vertical load and large moment. The physical modeling of a pile foundation for a wind turbine is analyzed using 3D finite element software, PLAXIS 3D. The soil profile consists of several clay layers, which are modeled as Mohr-Coulomb material in an undrained condition. The piles in the pile group foundation are modeled as special elements called embedded pile elements. To model the problem of a pile group foundation, a small gap is created between the pile cap and underlying soil. The pile cap is modeled as a rigid plate element connected to each pile by a hinge. As a result, applied vertical load and large moment are transferred only to piles without any load sharing to underlying soil. Results of the study focus on pile load distribution for the square shape of a pile group foundation. Mathematical expression is proposed to describe pile force distribution for the cases of vertical load and large moment and purely vertical load.

  • This paper presents a computational study for the structural response of blast loaded metallic sandwich panels, with the emphasis placed on their failure behaviours. The fully-clamped panels are square, and the honeycomb core and skins are made of the same aluminium alloy. A material model considering strain and strain rate hardening effects is used and the blast load is idealised as either a uniform or localised pressure over a short duration. The deformation/failure procedure and modes of the sandwich panels are identified and analysed. In the uniform loading condition, the effect of core density and face-sheets thicknesses is analysed. Likewise, the influence of pulse shape on the failure modes is investigated by deriving a pressure-impulse (P-I) diagram. For localised loading, a comparative study is carried out to assess the blast resistant behaviours of three types of structures: sandwich panel with honeycomb core, two face-sheets with air core and monolithic plate, in terms of their permanent deflections and damage degrees. The finding of this research provides a valuable insight into the engineering design of sandwich constructions against air blast loads.

  • In this paper, linear elastic isotropic structures under the effects of both stochastic operators and stochastic excitations are studied. The analysis utilizes the spectral stochastic finite elements (SSFEM) with its two main expansions namely; Neumann and Homogeneous Chaos expansions. The random excitation and the random operator fields are assumed to be second order stochastic processes. The formulations are obtained for the system solution of the two dimensional problems of plane strain and plate bending structures under stochastic loading and relevant rigidity using the previously mentioned expansions. Two finite element programs were developed to incorporate such formulations. Two illustrative examples are introduced: the first is a reinforced concrete culvert with stochastic rigidity subjected to a stochastic load where the culvert is modeled as plane strain problem. The second example is a simply supported square reinforced concrete slab subjected to out of plane loading in which the slab flexural rigidity and the applied load are considered stochastic. In each of the two examples, the first two statistical moments of displacement are evaluated using both expansions. The probability density function of the structure response of each problem is obtained using Homogeneous Chaos expansion.

  • An experimental study of heat transfer of submerged water jet impinging normally on a flat plate is presented. Heat transfer measurements obtained with Reverse cone type nozzle(Rcone) were compared to those obtained with Cone type nozzle(Cone) and Square edged type nozzle(Vert) of the same diameter(D=8mm) for different jet velocities in the range of $3{\sim}7m/s(Re_D=30000{\sim}70000)$ and various nozzle-to target spacings($H/D=2{\sim}10$). The local Nusselt number profiles exhibited a sharp drop for $r/D{\leq}0.5$ and 2nd, 3rd peaks revealed at r/D=2, 3 respectively, followed by a slower decrease there after. The peaks were weakened with increasing the nozzle-to target spacing and decreasing the jet velocity. The stagnation Nusselt number of the Reverse cone type nozzle was larger than those of the other two nozzles for H/D=2. 10, but Cone type nozzle had the highest value for $H/D=4{\sim}8$. Also average Nusselt number of the Reverse cone type nozzle was higher than those of the other two nozzles at $H/D=2{\sim}10$, except for $V_o=7ms$ of H/D=6.

  • In this paper, a new numerical method is proposed to analyze near-field sonar cross section of acoustically large-sized underwater targets such as submarines. A near-field problem is converted to a far-field problem using a spherical projection method with respect to the objective target. Then, sonar cross section is calculated with a physical optics well established in far-field acoustic wave scattering problems. The analysis results of a square flat plate compared with those obtained by other method show the accuracy of the proposed method. Moreover, it is noted that the sonar cross section is varied with respect to the targeting point as well as the range. Finally, numerical analysis results of real-like underwater target such as a submarine pressure hull are discussed.

  • The height of valve body is limited to 30mm in the cook-top style gas valves for the domestic gas ranges. But the all the safety specifications of KS should be fulfilled and the magnetic power unit(MPU) should be installed in the valve body for the safety reason. The length of MPU body is longer than the 30mm that it should be located in the square direction of the knob shaft and therefore the implementation of the lever mechanism to transmit the press motion of the knob to the MPU valve is very difficult. In this paper, the hinged lever with inclined plate is used to transmit the press motion of the knob to the MPU valve. The analysis of the gas flow with using the commercial software of FLOW-3D shows that the gas flow capacity is fit for the domestic gas range. The performance and responsibility of the valve is tested for the mass production and the test results shows that the valve can be installed in the commercial gas range.

  • Electromagnetic wave absorbers for anechoic chamber are needed to broaden the useful frequency bandwidth, reduce the thickness, and decrease the weight. There are various absorbers proposed for the above conditions, but they could not decisively solve the above requirements. The Electromagnetic wave absorber made by a conventional ferrite tile has, for example, broadened the useful frequency bandwidth by the way of forming air layer. Therefore, an air layer is formed absorber between a reflection plate and a sintered Ni-Zn ferrite tile of 7 mm in thickness, which has reflectivity less than -20 dB from 30 MHz to 450 MHz in frequency band, far narrower than the aimed bandwidth. The purpose of this paper is on the development of a universal anechoic chamber for measuring radiated electromagnetic wave or immunity of electronic equipments, GTEM-cell, wall material for prevention of TV ghost, etc. Accordingly, in this paper, a broadened electromagnetic wave absorber is designed, which has the reflection characteristics less than -20 dB from 30 MHz to 5,430 or 8,000 MHz in the bandwidth. Then we will design a super broadband electromagnetic wave absorber by inserting square Ferrite Cylinders Type with the thickness less than 23.5 m in three-layed type and with the frequency band from 30 MHz to 5,430-8,000 MHz under the above tolerance limits.

  • In this paper, we present theoretical and experimental study on the viscous damping of the on-substrate torsional micromirrors, oscillating near the silicon substrates. In this theoretical study, we develop theoretical models and test structures for the viscous damping of the on-substrate torsional micromirrors. From a finite element analysis, we estimate the theoretical damping coefficients of the torsional micromirrors. From a finite element analysis, we estimate the theoretical damping coefficients of the torsional micromirrors, fabricated by the surface-micromaching process. From the electrostatic test of the fabricated devices, frequency-dependent rotationalvelocity of the micromirrors has been measured at the atmospheric pressure using devices, frequency-dependent rotational velocity of the micromirrors has been measured at the atmospheric pressure using the Mach-Zehnder interferometer system. Experimental damping coefficients have been extracted from the least square fit of the measured rotational velocity within the filter bandwidth of 150 kHz. We have compared the theoretical values and the experimental results on the dynamic performance of the micromirrors. The theoretical analysis overstimates the resonant frequency in the amount of 15%, while underestimating the viscous damping in the factors of 10%.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an eco-friendly foodservice program at a high school on dietary behaviors of students, awareness of importance of eco-friendly activities, and foodservice satisfaction. Methods: The survey was conducted with students at two schools in Gyeonggi, Korea. A total of 576 of 650 students were used for this study. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, independent t-test, and factor analysis to test the two group's differences. Results: The practices of 'eat balanced meals' or 'finish all food on the plate' scored high (p < 0.001) in students that participated in the eco-friendly foodservice program than those who did not. Regarding awareness of the importance of eco-friendly activities, all attributes scored higher in students that participated in the eco-friendly foodservice program. All attributes for satisfaction except two scored higher (p < 0.05) in students that participated in the eco-friendly foodservice program. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) of the correlation showed that high subjective income status was positively associated with foodservice satisfaction. Conclusion: Students that participated in the eco-friendly foodservice program are highly aware of the importance of eco-friendly activities. They demonstrate more positive dietary behaviors and higher awareness of the importance of eco-friendly programs with greater foodservice satisfaction.

  • A mono-static high frequency acoustic target strength analysis scheme was developed for underwater targets, based on the far-field Kirchhoff approximation. Au adaptive triangular beam method and a concept of virtual surface were adopted for considering the effect of hidden surfaces and multiple reflections of an underwater target, respectively. A test of a simple target showed that the suggested hidden surface removal scheme is valid. Then some numerical analyses, for several underwater targets, were carried out; (1) for several simple underwater targets, like sphere, square plate, cylinder, trihedral corner reflector, and (2) for a generic submarine model, The former was exactly coincident with the theoretical results including beam patterns versus azimuth angles, and the latter suggested that multiple reflections have to be considered to estimate more accurate target strength of underwater targets.
