  • The objective of this paper is to develop volume equation of street tree and its carbon stock for urban forest in Seoul. To develop the volume equation by major species in Seoul, data for street trees were obtained from four-species (e.g. Gingko biloba, Platanus occidentalis, Zelkova serrata, and Metasequoia glyptostroboides), which accounted for 79% all street trees in Seoul. This study used a variable based on diameter on breast height and four equation for calculating volume. The coefficient of determination, bias, and root mean square error were used to evaluate the precision of four equations. From these methods, the most suitable equations for Platanus occidentalis was aDb, the other was aD+bD2; coefficient of determination upper on 0.873. From the volume equation developed in this research, the estimated carbon stock were derived as about 33,760tC for four-species of urban forest in Seoul. The results of this paper offered volume equation and carbon stock that present growth information for street trees in urban forestry and these can be made available for evaluating the management for carbon in settlement.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the validity and reliability of Shively and colleagues' self-efficacy for HIV disease management skills (HIV-SE) among Korean participants. Methods: The original HIV-SE questionnaire, comprising 34 items, was translated into Korean using a translation and back-translation process. To enhance clarity and eliminate redundancy, the author and expert committee engaged in multiple discussions and integrated two items with similar meanings into a single item. Further, four HIV nurse experts tested content validity. Survey data were collected from 227 individuals diagnosed with HIV from five Korean hospitals. Construct validity was verified through confirmatory factor analysis. Criterion validity was evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficients with the new general self-efficacy scale. Internal consistency reliability and test-retest were examined for reliability. Results: The Korean version of HIV-SE (K-HIV-SE) comprises 33 items across six domains: "managing depression/mood," "managing medications," "managing symptoms," "communicating with a healthcare provider," "getting support/help," and "managing fatigue." The fitness of the modified model was acceptable (minimum value of the discrepancy function/degree of freedom = 2.49, root mean square error of approximation = .08, goodness-of-fit index = .76, adjusted goodness-of-fit index = .71, Tucker-Lewis index = .84, and comparative fit index = .86). The internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's α = .91) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = .73) were good. The criterion validity of the K-HIV-SE was .59 (p < .001). Conclusion: This study suggests that the K-HIV-SE is useful for efficiently assessing self-efficacy for HIV disease management.

  • Purpose: This in vitro study aimed to compare the trueness of 3-unit fixed dental provisional prostheses (FDPs) fabricated by three different additive manufacturing and subtractive manufacturing procedures. Methods: A reference model with a maxillary left second premolar and the second molar prepped and the first molar missing was scanned for the fabrication of 3-unit FDPs. An anatomically shaped 3-unit FDP was designed on computer-aided design software. 10 FDPs were fabricated by subtractive (MI group) and additive manufacturing (stereolithography: SL group, digital light processing: DL group, liquid crystal displays: LC group) methods, respectively (N=40). All FDPs were scanned and exported to the standard triangulated language file. A three-dimensional analysis program measured the discrepancy of the internal, margin, and pontic base area. As for the comparison among manufacturing procedures, the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Mann-Whitney test with Bonferroni correction were evaluated statistically. Results: Regarding the internal area, the root mean square (RMS) value of the 3-unit FDPs was the lowest in the MI group (31.79±6.39 ㎛) and the highest in the SL group (69.34±29.88 ㎛; p=0.001). In the marginal area, those of the 3-unit FDPs were the lowest in the LC group (25.39±4.36 ㎛) and the highest in the SL group (48.94±18.98 ㎛; p=0.001). In the pontic base area, those of the 3-unit FDPs were the lowest in the LC group (8.72±2.74 ㎛) and the highest in the DL group (20.75±2.03 ㎛; p=0.001). Conclusion: A statistically significant difference was observed in the RMS mean values of all the groups. However, in comparison to the subtractive manufacturing method, all measurement areas of 3-unit FDPs fabricated by three different additive manufacturing methods are within a clinically acceptable range.

  • In this study, a stochastic precipitation generation framework for simultaneous simulation of daily precipitation at multiple sites is presented. The precipitation occurrence at individual sites is generated using hybrid-order Markov chain model which allows higher-order dependence for dry sequences. The precipitation amounts are reproduced using Anscombe residuals and gamma distributions. Multisite spatial correlations in the precipitation occurrence and amount series are represented with spatially correlated random numbers. The proposed model is applied for a network of 17 locations in the middle of Korean peninsular. Evaluation statistics are reported by generating 50 realizations of the precipitation of length equal to the observed record. The analysis of results show that the model reproduces wet day number, wet and dry day spell, and mean and standard deviation of wet day amount fairly well. However, mean values of 50 realizations of generated precipitation series yield around 23% Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) of the average value of observed maximum numbers of consecutive wet and dry days and 17% RMSE of the average value of observed annual maximum precipitations for return periods of 100 and 200 years. The provided model also reproduces spatial correlations in observed precipitation occurrence and amount series accurately.

  • Recently, NDTs (Non-Destructive Techniques) using electromagnetic(EM) properties are applied to the performance evaluation for RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures. Since nonmetallic materials which are cement-based system have their unique dielectric constant and conductivity, they can be characterized and changed with different mixture conditions like W/C (water to cement) ratios and unit cement weight. In a room condition, cement mortar is generally dry so that porosity plays a major role in EM properties, which is determined at early-aged stage and also be affected by curing condition. In this paper, EM properties (dielectric constant and conductivity) in cement mortar specimens with 4 different W/C ratios are measured in the wide region of 0.2 GHz~20 GHz. Each specimen has different submerged curing period from 0 to 28 days and then EM measurement is performed after 4 weeks. Furthermore, porosity at the age of 28 days is measured through MIP (Mercury Intrusion Porosimeter) and saturation is also measured through amount of water loss in room condition. In order to evaluate the porosity from the initial curing stage, numerical analysis based on the modeling for the behavior in early-aged concrete is performed and the calculated results of porosity and measured EM properties are analyzed. For the convenient comparison with influencing parameters like W/C ratios and curing period, EM properties from 5 GHz to 15 GHz are averaged as one value. For 4 weeks, the averaged dielectric constant and conductivity in cement mortar are linearly decrease with higher W/C ratios and they increase in proportion to the square root of curing period regardless of W/C ratios.

  • In this study, we estimated the concentration of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) using hyperspectral water surface reflectance in an inland weir (Baekjae weir) and estuarine reservoir (Namyang Reservoir) for monitoring the occurrence of algae in freshwater in South Korea. The hyperspectral reflectance was measured by aircraft in Baekjae Weir (BJW) from 2016 to 2017, and a drone in Namyang Reservoir (NYR) from 2020 to 2021. The 30 reflectance bands (BJW: 400-530, 620-680, 710-730, 760-790 nm, NYR: 400-430, 655-680, 740-800 nm) that were highly related to Chl-a concentration were selected using permutation importance. Artificial neural network based Chl-a estimation model was developed using the selected reflectance in both water bodies. And the performance of the model was evaluated with the coefficient of determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the mean absolute error (MAE). The performance evaluation results of the Chl-a estimation model for each watershed was R2: 0.63, 0.82, RMSE: 9.67, 6.99, and MAE: 11.25, 8.48, respectively. The developed Chl-a model of this study may be used as foundation tool for the optimal management of freshwater algal blooms in the future.

  • SPT-Uphole test is a seismic field test using receivers on ground surface and a SPT (Standard penetration test) source in depth. Even though this method is simple and economic, it makes hesitate to apply in real field that it is difficult to obtain reliable travel time information of shear wave because of the characteristics of SPT impact source. To overcome this shortcoming, in this paper, modified SPT-Uphole method using two component surface geophones was suggested. Numerical analysis was performed using finite element method for understanding the characteristics of surface motion induced by in-depth vertical source, and comparison study of the various methods which determine the travel time information in SPT-Uphole method was performed. In result, it is thought that the most reasonable method is using the first local maximum point of the root mean square value signals of vertical and horizontal component in time domain. Finally, modified SPT-Uphole method using two component surface geophones was performed at the site, and the applicability in field was verified by comparing wave velocity profiles determined by the SPT-Uphole method with the profiles determined by SASW method and SPT-N values.

  • This study is to develop a grid-based daily runoff model considering seasonal vegetation canopy condition. The model simulates the temporal and spatial variation of runoff components (surface, interflow, and baseflow), evapotranspiration (ET) and soil moisture contents of each grid element. The model is composed of three main modules of runoff, ET, and soil moisture. The total runoff was simulated by using soil water storage capacity of the day, and was allocated by introducing recession curves of each runoff component. The ET was calculated by Penman-Monteith method considering MODIS leaf area index (LAI). The daily soil moisture was routed by soil water balance equation. The model was evaluated for 930 $km^2$ Yongdam watershed. The model uses 1 km spatial data on landuse, soil, boundary, MODIS LAI. The daily weather data was built using IDW method (2000-2008). Model calibration was carried out to compare with the observed streamflow at the watershed outlet. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency was 0.78~0.93. The watershed soil moisture was sensitive to precipitation and soil texture, consequently affected the streamflow, and the evapotranspiration responded to landuse type.

  • In this paper, hybrid health monitoring techniques using acceleration-impedance features are newly proposed to detect two damage-type in steel plate-girder bridges, which are girder's stiffness-loss and support perturbation. The hybrid techniques mainly consists of three sequential phases: 1) to alarm the occurrence of damage in global manner, 2) to classify the alarmed damage into subsystems of the structure, and 3) to estimate the classified damage in detail using methods suitable for the subsystems. In the first phase, the global occurrence of damage is alarmed by monitoring changes in acceleration features. In the second phase, the alarmed damage is classified into subsystems by recognizing patterns of impedance features. In the final phase, the location and the extent of damage are estimated by using modal strain energy-based damage index method and root mean square deviation (RMSD) method. The feasibility of the proposed hybrid technique is evaluated on a laboratory-scaled steel plate-girder bridge model for which hybrid acceleration-impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios. Also, the effect of temperature on the accuracy of the impedance-based damage monitoring results are experimentally examined from combined scenarios of support damage cases and temperature changes.

  • The Reference Evapotranspiration Calculator Software (REF-ET) supports computational guidelines for the reference evapotranspiration using seventeen FAO Penman-Monteith (PM) equations simultaneously such as the ASCE and FAO standardized forms. The REF-ET can conveniently consider missing data predictions and regional site characterizations, when reference ET is computed on monthly, daily, and hourly time steps. The applicability of the REF-ET was estimated to simulate the reference ET using hourly weather data from Seoul weather station for 29 years. The result found that the FAO24-Rd and 1957-Makk equations closely concerned with solar radiation parameter which were the most highly correlated to reference ET computed by pan coefficient. In addition, the 1957-Makk equation was identified as the most correct computational method for reference ET by analysis of bias and root mean square error. The 1957-Makk equation could predict the reference ET within the error of less than 1.06 mm/day, though all the other equations tended toward overestimation of predicting the reference ET in comparison with refecence ET of pan. The results of this study suggest that the REF-ET will be applicable to support reference ET estimation for a variety of field condition and time-scale.
