Spectral behaviors of lasing from semiconductor square ring microcavities with structures for unidirectional laser oscillation were investigated. When a tapered structure was introduced, the lasing envelope shifted to a shorter wavelength region. Statistical estimate of the additional loss caused by the tapered structure was carried out by analyzing spectral data from many sets of cavities with various sizes. When a saw-edged structure was introduced, the unidirectional lasing functioned well but no apparent spectral shift was observed due to negligible additional loss.
In this study, a cavity shape measurement experiment was conducted by changing the diameter and the angle of attack of a disk cavitator. Since the gravity effect is proportional to the cavity volume, the larger the cavity, the greater the effect. It is concluded that the gravity effect becomes smaller as the cavitation number decreases because of a short cavity maintaining time. The cavity centerline rises in case of the positive angle of attack and descends in case of the negative angle of attack. Since the effect of the angle of attack is inversely proportional to the square of the cavity radius, the effect of the angle of attack becomes dominant in the vicinity of the cavitator. It is judged that the horizontal section of the cavity centerline cannot be extended because the factors affecting the gravity effect and the angle of attack effect are different.
The present numerical study is aimed to investigate time-dependent characteristics of a two-dimensional lid-driven square cavity flow of three high Reynolds numbers, $7.5{\times}10^3$, $10^4$ and $3{\times}10^4$. A conservative convection term on irregular grids was adopted by renewing the MAC type difference schemes on regular grids. Relaxation of velocity and pressure is implemented by SOLA algorithm. In case of $Re=7.5{\times}10^3$, flow behavior converges to steady state after a transient period. But for $Re=10^4$, periodic unsteady sinusoidal fluctuation of local velocity and kinetic energy is found and continuous movements of small eddies in the secondary flow regions are also discovered. Random generation of eddies and their active migrating behavior are detected for $Re=3{\times}10^4$, resulting in complete unsteady and non-linear flow characteristics. And, an organized structure similar to a Moffat vortex is also observed from the time-mean flow patterns. Furthermore, a typoon-like vortex(TLV) appears intemittently and rotates along the separation regions and boundary layers.
In a square cavity, the flow phenomena in the surrounding of the bubble attached at the upper cooled solid wall were studied by using a thermo-sensitive liquid-crystal tracer and image processing techniques. This method offers the advantage of measuring the entire flow field in a selected plane within the fluid at a given instant of time in contrast to point by point method like T/C. Quantitative data of the temperature were obtained by applying a colour-image-processing to the. visualized image. As the growing of a bubble, In a bubble size appears the flow phenomena which the direction of flow is reversed in the entire temperature and flow field. The observed phenomena are described with regard to thermocapillary convection.

The calix[4]arene molecule adopting the 1,3-alternate conformation forms a square cavity, and two pair phenyl rings lying above and below a least-square plane defined by the four bridging methylene groups in the calix[4]arene are widened upwards and downwards, respectively, from central axis, which leads to O1-O4=4.064 and O2-O3=3.864 . Two propyloxy groups are stabilized with all trans conformations, but the rather short azacrown ether chain with two oxygen atoms includes cis/trans conformations with O1-C35=2.906 . Therefore the cavity does not seem to be big enough to form a host-guest complex.
This paper investigates active noise control(ANC) of a rectangular cavity using single channel filtered-x least mean square(FXLMS) algorithms to reduce interior noise globally. To obtain global reduction of the interior noise, multichannel active control should be incorporated in general. We, however, examined firstly the optimal location of the secondary speaker that produces a global reduction of the interior noise field. We then investigated the frequency characteristics of the reduction to yield the effective frequency band of the active control system. It follows that the secondary speaker should be located as close to the primary source as possible in order to obtain global reduction.
The nondestructive internal quality evaluation of agricultural products has been strongly required from the needs for individual inspection. Recently, the ultrasonic wave has been considered as a solution fur this problem, and an ultrasonic system was constructed for the ultrasonic NDE of fruits and vegetables in our previous work. In this paper, the practical applicability of our ultrasonic system is tested fur the inspection of internal defects (central cavity) in Atlantic potato. Sound speed and RMS of transmitted ultrasonic wave signal were measured and classification algorithm using 2 dimensional stochastic analysis. was presented. Experimental results showed greater value of sound speed and RMS (root mean square) of transmitted signal in normal samples than in abnormal samples with cavity. Also a stochastic method to distinguish normal and abnormal showed fault detection rate less than 5%.
Numerical simulations of two-dimensional steady incompressible lid-driven flow in a square cavity are presented to verify the validity of a new solution code(PowerCFD) with unstructured grids. The code uses the non-staggered(collocated) grid approach which is very popular for incompressible flow analysis because of its numerical efficiency on the curvilinear or unstructured grids. Solutions are obtained for configurations with a Reynolds number as high as 10,000 with both rectangular and hybrid types of unstructured grid mesh. Interesting features of the flow are presented in detail and comparisons are made with benchmark solutions found in the literature. It is found that the code is capable of producing accurately the nature of the lid-driven cavity flow at high Reynolds numbers.

Two-dimensional turbulent flows past a square cylinder and cavity noise are simulated by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method with subgrid turbulence model. The method, based on the standard Smagorinsky subgrid model and a single-time relaxation lattice Boltzmann method, incorporates the advantages of FDLBM for handling arbitrary boundaries. The results are compared with those by the experiments carried out by Noda & Nakayama and Lyn et al. Numerical results agree with the experimental ones. Besides, 2D computation of the cavity noise generated by flow over a cavity at a Mach number of 0.1 and a Reynolds number based on cavity depth of 5000 is calculated. The computation result is well presented a understanding of the physical phenomenon of tonal noise occurred primarily by well-jet shear layer and vortex shedding and an aeroacoustic feedback loop.
