Two groups of esophagus graft were done in canine esophagus in 34 adult mongrel dogs. For the first group segmental replacement graft was done with fresh autologous pericardium tube, and for the second, patch graft was done utilizing fresh autologous pericardium, fresh homologous pericardium,and dacron piece. All eight dogs in the first segmental replacement graft group died 2 to 5 days after operation with severe empyema caused by anastomosis disruption. Among 26 patch graft dogs 2 died during operation and 7 died 13 to 18 days after operation. For the 17 long-term patch grafted survivors esophagography and postoperative weight check were done. Postoperative stool was collected and examined for dacron patch excretion. One, two, three, and four months postoperative long-term survivors were sacrificed to obtain specimens in each group respectively and the following observations were made.I. Survival; Autologous pericardium patch group showed no mortality but in homologous pericardium and dacron patch group only two thirds were long-term survivors. II. Postoperative swallowing; There was no case which demonstrated postoperative dysphagia. About half of the cases showed postoperative weight increase and in only 3 cases weight decrease followed operation. III. Dacron patch was excreted in the stool 8 to 23 days after operation. Animals which excreted dacron patch up to 9 days after operation all died of empyema due to anastomosis disruption.IV. Postoperative esophagogram; All esophagograms in each group showed no leakage of barium, no passage disturbances and no remarkable stenotic signs.V. Morphological findings; [A] Macroscopical findings; In one month group specimens of each group dense adhesion with surrounding structures was noted and luminal surface was smooth with contraction of the patched area. In two month groups anastomosis sutures were still exposed but patched area showed lesser abnormality. In three to four months groups sutures were covered completely and patched area showed only very slight signs of contraction. [B] Microscopic findings; In one month group luminal surface of the replaced tissue [transplanted tissue] showed almost complete epithelial covering that is composed of several layers of squamous cells with no evidence of keratinization. Basement membrane was also well distinct throughout. Slight to minimal inflammatory cells comprising of large mononuclears, lymphocytes and plasma cells were observed in the subepithelial fibrous stroma consisted entirely of loose fibrous tissue containing many newly formed capillaries and fibroblastic proliferation. Scattered suture granulomas were found, few of which became acutely inflamed. In two months group repairing process progressed with lesser degree of inflammatory cell infiltration and young capillary proliferation. Fibrous tissue was more matured showing even focal collagenization.Suture granuloma persisted but with lesser reactive changes. Epithelial covering was that of a mature non-keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. In three and four months groups the replaced area showed essentially similar histological findings. However, subepithelial stroma still consisted entirely of connective tissue without evidence of smooth muscle regeneration. In this group, inflammatory cell infiltration was minimal or negligible. Among these patch materials autologous pericardium group showed the most satisfactory repairing process.The above mentioned results may signify the feasibility of autogenous pericardium patch graft in clinical esophageal surgery.

The primary intra-osseous carcinoma (PIOC) is a very rare lesion. PIOC is an odontogenic carcinoma defined as a squamous cell carcinoma arisinig within a jaw having no initial connection with the oral mucosa, and presumably developing from residues of the odontogenic epithelium. The authors diagnosed a 51-year-old female as primary intra-osseous carcinoma after undergoing clinical, radiological and histological examinations. The characteristics were as followed : 1. The patient complained of gingival bleeding on the premolar area in the left maxilla 2. The conventional radiograms showed a relatively well-defined unilocular radiolucent lesion from the mesial aspect of the upper left canine to the mesial aspect of the upper left 1st molar. The 2nd premolar was separated from the 1st molar and the floor of the maxillary sinus was elevated by the lesion. There was a external root resorption of the upper left canine, the 1st premolar, and the 2nd premolar. 3. On the computed tomograms, the osteolytic bony lesion expanded the cortical plate of the left maxilla and displaced the margin of the left maxillary sinus upwards. But the bony lesion was separated from the maxillary sinus by a bony septum. 4. Bone scintigram with /sup 99m/Tc demonstrated the increased uptake in the left maxilla. Sonograms in the neck area and chest P-A radiogram didn't show any abnormalities. 5. Histologically, the tumor islands infiltrating into the surrounding bone increased in alveolar pattern, composed of the malignant cells, and there was a necrosis in the center of the tumor islands.
Morphology of the gill in Lateolabrax japonicus was investigated after staining the gill, as a result, we found the gill is composed of gill raker, gill arch, gill filament and gill lamellae. The number of gill raker was 7~10 in the upper and 13~18 in the lower. Ultrastructure of the gill in Lateolabrax japonicus were examined by means of the light and transmission electron microscopes. The gill have primary filament and secondary filament (lamellae). The following cells are identified and described: pavement cell, pillar cell, blood cell, mucose cell and chloride cell etc. Simple epithelial layer consists of squamous epithelium contained large nucleus, intracellular organelles etc. and the surface is covered with some of microridges. The lamella pillar structures are characterized by the axial microtubules and lateral membrane interdigitations. The mucous cells were globular in shape, and had almost the mucous granules of same size with various electron density. Chloride cells contain a lot of mitochondria and specifically developed tubular systems.
Cyclosporin A(CsA) is now widely used to treat organ transplant recipients. But CsA has various short-and long-term side effects. Especially, gingival hyperplasia is not easy to resolve since its nature is still unknown. This study discusses the pathogenesis of CsA-induced gingival hyperplasia on the basis of data obtained from light and electron microscopic studies of biopsis from patients on CsA treatment after kidney transplantation. Light microscopically, the multilayered squamous epithelium showed an irregular surface of parakeratosis and deep invaginations in the subepithelial tissue. At lamina propria, we observed bundles of irregularly arranged collagen fiber, some fibroblasts, numerous capillary vessels and a large diffuse infiltration of plasma cells. Ultrastructurally, many fibroblasts, collagen fibers, collagen fibrils were present in lamina propria. On the basis of the data collected, we propose that the morphological features of the dimensional increase in gingival tissue associated with CsA treatment in kidney transplant patients may be considered proliferative fibroblasts, collagen fibers, collagen fibrils in lamina propria.

Dermoid cysts are benign congenital tumors composed of keratinizing squamous epithelium and dermal derivatives. They account for less than 1% of all intracranial tumors and are rarely exhibited at the base of the skull. To the best of our knowledge, only one case report has presented computed tomography and conventional T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) findings that revealed an infratemporal dermoid cyst. In the present study, we report an unusual case of a dermoid cyst in the right infratemporal fossa, which was incidentally detected by MR imaging with the Dixon technique. This article also highlights the importance of meticulous radiological review and the usefulness of the Dixon technique in everyday clinical practice.
Purpose: Failure of proper migration, fusion, or maturation of the branchial apparatus components results in a variety of congenital defects. Of these, cartilaginous rests are infrequent, while branchial cysts and sinuses are more common, relatively. The purpose of this study is to examine the clinical and pathological features of rare cervical branchial remnants in order to provide basis for its correct diagnosis and treatment. Methods: We report three cases of cervical branchial remnants which were treated in our hospital from December 2004 to December 2009. These cases were examined their clinical features, histologic findings and treatments. The patients had been operated with simple excision, excision of the combined components and preoperative antiboitics. Results: A retrospective review produced 2 cases of the cervical branchial remnants and 1 case of the cervical chondrocutaneous branchial remnant. All cases were on the left side of the neck, and anterior to the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Histopathological examination showed that fistula & sinus were lined with stratified squamous epithelium, additionally, they were consisted of a cutaneous envelope containing sebaceous glands, hair follicles, various amounts of adipose tissue, and elastic fibers. And, One case revealed containing hyaline cartilage. No patient developed complications or reccurences. Conclusion: The authors recommend simple surgical excision of the remnants when discharge, infection, or cosmetic problem occur. Finally, these lesions do not have fistulous tracts or connections with important, deeper organs, and so can be safely transected at the level of the superficial musculature.
Purpose: To evaluate the expression of Her2/neu and Ki-67 in benign and malignant gallbladder lesions, and to establish correlations with clinico-pathologic parameters. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) benign (n=25) and malignant gallbladder (n=25) tissue samples. Hematoxylin and eosin stained slides of each case were reviewed for: type of malignancy (whether adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or any other type), grade (well, moderate, and poor), depth of invasion, pre-neoplastic changes in adjacent mucosal epithelium like metaplasia and dysplasia. Immunohistochemistry for Her 2 neu and Ki-67 was performed and data analysis was conducted using SPSS 17 software. Chi-square test was used to compare categorical/dichotomous variables. P value of ${\leq}0.05$ was considered significant. Results: The difference of Her 2 neu expression and Ki67 index between benign and malignant groups was found to be statistically significant. Her2/neu positivity did not have any significant correlation with various clinicopathological parameters other than liver involvement. 5 cases of gallbladder cancer showed both Her2/neu and Ki67 positivity. Ten cases were Ki67 positive but Her2/neu negative while one case was Her2/neu positive but Ki67 negative. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated overexpression of Her2/neu and Ki67 in gallbladder cancer. A trend of decreasing Her2/neu expression with increasing grade of tumor was observed. Furthermore, greater Ki67 positivity was found in cases with lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis. Future studies with a larger number of patients will be required to precisely define the correlation of Her2/neu expression and Ki67 positivity with clinicopathological parameters. The results however are encouraging and suggest evaluation of Her2/neu as a candidate for targeted therapy.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome(NBCCS) is a autosomal dominant disorder, and its major manifestations are multiple basal cell carcinoma, keratocystic odontogenic tumor, rib anomalies, palmer and plantar pits, calcification of the falx cerebri. Keratocystic odontogenic tumor(KCOT) is defined as intraosseous tumor of odontogenic origin with a characteristic lining of parakeratinized stratified squamous epithelium and potential aggressive behavior. We report a case of a 3-year-old patient with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome who initially presented with unilocular keratocystic odontogenic tumor in maxillary canine region. Keratocystic odontogenic tumor was treated by enucleation, and periodic follow-up check will be required for early diagnosis of additional diseases related with this syndrome.
Overexpression of several aquaporins (AQPs) has been reported in different types of human cancer but their role in carcinogenesis, for example in the cervix, have yet to be clearly defined. In this study, expression of AQPs in cervical carcinomawas investigated by real-time PCR, immunofluorescent and immunohistochemical assays and evaluated for correlations with clinicopathologic variables. AQP1, 3, 8 exhibited differential expression in cervical carcinoma, corresponding CIN and mild cervicitis. AQP1 was predominantly localized in the microvascular endothelial cell in the stroma of mild cervicitis, CIN and cervical carcinoma. AQP3 and AQP8 were localized in the membrane of normal squamous epithelium and carcinoma cells, local signals being more common than diffuse staining. AQP1 and AQP3 expression was remarkably stronger in cervical cancer than in mild cervicitis and CIN2-3 (P<0.05). AQP8 expression was highest in CIN2-3 (91.7%), but levels in cervical carcinoma were also higher than in mild cervicitis. AQP1, AQP3, AQP8 expression significantly increased in advanced stage, deeper infiltration, metastatic lymph nodes and larger tumor volume (P<0.05). Our findings showed that AQPs might play important roles in cervical carcinogenesis and tumour progression in Uygur women.
