Runoff, sediments and nutrient losses were studied under different patterns of paddy field management: (1) fall and spring plowing (Plowing)i (2) fall plowing for half of plot and spring plowing (Semi-plowing); (3) no-till for fall and spring plowing (Un-plowing) during the non-cropping period in the southern Korea for two years. The runoff amount and initial abstract were significantly affected by plowing practices. Un-plowing plot showed the highest runoff amount among treatments. The concentrations of sediment from Plowing plot were much higher than those from Un-plowing plot, especially after (all plowing. Sediment losses from Plowing plot were 25% more than those from Un-plowing plot. There was significant difference in nutrient losses via runoff water and sediment according to plowing practice. Two-year average of losses of N from paddy field during non-cropping period were 9.42 kg ha$\^$-1/, 8.17kg ha$\^$-1/, and 7.76 kg ha$\^$-l/ for Un-plowing, Semi-plowing, and Plowing plot, respectively, while losses of P were 0.64 kg ha$\^$-1/, 0.58 kg ha$\^$-1/, and 0.58 kg ha$\^$-1/ for each tillage system. Losses of total-N, ammonia-N, nitrate-N, Total-P from Un-plowing plot was larger than those from Plowing and Semi-plowing plots during study period.

In Korea, the average air temperature has been elevated twice faster than the average global warming. And the climate warming is characterized by the smaller rise of air temperature in summer and the greater rise of air temperature in spring and winter. Therefore, the number of frost-free days to determine the cultivation ability of crops has increased by more than 15 days in 10 years according to climate warming. This climate warming trend has extended and is projected to extend not only the sweet potato growing season but also the sweet potato early cultivating area to higher altitude and latitude region. This study was carried out to evaluate the possibility of sweet potato double cropping in the southern island area of Korea by assessing the growth and yield performance of sweet potato cultivated at extremely-early and -late time. We had performed at Yokji Island Yokji Island($E128^{\circ}$ 18' $N34^{\circ}$ 36'), a representative specified complex area of sweet potato cultivation in southern Korea. As the test varieties, the major cultivars of the this region, Shinyulmi and early hypertrophic cultivars, Dahomi were used. The prior cropping were planted with PE film mulching on March 30 and April 10, and harvested after 110 days. So the succeeding cropping were planted without PE film mulching on July 25 and August 5 according to the harvesting time of the prior sweet potato and harvested after 120 days. As a control, it was harvested on September 15, 120 days after planted on May 15. Each experimental plot had an area of 12 square meters consisting of 4 beds, and was planted one at a time at intervals of 25cm. We had investigated growth characteristics - main vine length, node number, branch number, total vine yield, and tuberous root characteristics - tuberous root number, average weight, starch value, and etc. After harvesting, we analyzed the economic effects by examining the postharvest quantity, the input labor, the management cost, and the income. The total yield of marketable products in prior and succeeding cropping was 46~70% higher than that of control. The average unit price of sweet potato was 36% higher than the conventional culture, and the gross income increased by 98%, but the operating cost increased by 83%, and the farm income increased by 103%. There are considerations such as the difficulty of enlargement of cultivation area due to lack of labor in limited space and the need for watering measures due to spring drought. However, if the area of application for sweet potatoes double system is increased by 10%, it can be used as a new cropping system.

This study was conducted to investigate suitable rice cultivars for various rice based cropping systems in a paddy field in the Yeongnam plain area. Thirteen rice cultivars (5 early, 3 medium and 5 mid-late maturing cultivars) and three transplanting dates (June 5, June 25 and July 5) were evaluated in this study. The mid-late and early maturing cultivars for the July 5 and June 25 transplanting headed before August 30 which is the safe heading date in the Yeongnam plain area, ranging from Aug. 26 - 28 and Aug. 18 - 23, respectively. The safe harvest time of rice for double and triple cropping systems should be before the middle of October for the cultivation of the succeeding winter crops. The rice yield was the highest for the June 5 transplanting regardless of the rice cultivars, and it gradually decreased as the transplanting date was delayed from June 5 to July 5 due to a decrease in the spikelet numbers per panicle number and in the ripened grain rate. In contrast, the other yield parameters that include the panicle number per $m^2$, the 1,000-brown rice weight, and the ripened grain ratio were not significantly affected. The result indicates that based on the milled rice, heading time and harvest time, a medium maturing cultivar (Haiami and Samdeog) would be applicable to a winter barley/wheat, garlic/onion-summer rice double cropping, while a mid-late cultivar (Saeilmi, Saenuri and Hyunpoom) would be suitable for a spring potato/waxy corn-summer rice double cropping in the Yeongnam plain area. On the other hand, an early maturing cultivar (Unkwang, Jokwang and Haedamssal) would be preferable for a triple cropping because of the short growth period of rice.
Five winter and five spring wheat cultivars of diverse genetic backgrounds were evaluated to examine different developmental responses in terms of stages of the life cycle and grain yield when grown under the different planting dates. Greatest difference in growth and developmental patterns of the winter and spring wheat cultivars occurred in stem elongation, booting, inflorescence emergence and anthesis. The growth stage of stem elongation was found to exhibit larger difference both among planting dates and cultivars. Winter wheat cultivars responded more than spring wheat cultivars to the different planting dates. Winter wheat 'Cho Kwang' and spring wheat 'Jugoku 81' were earlier and exhibited faster growth and development, while winter wheats 'Yamhill' and 'Hyslop' were later in growth and development, but exhibited faster grain filling and higher rate of grain filling, resulting in higher grain yields. Crosses between winter and spring wheat gene pools would result in earlier maturity and higher productivity for both winter and spring wheat cultivars. For developing early maturing wheat cultivars for multiple cropping sequences while maintaining productivity, selection for earliness trait should be started at the stem elongation stage. Furthermore, the breeding materials should be planted at several times for selection of shorter life cycle genotypes adaptable to the cropping sequences. This is due to the genotype x planting date interactions.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the grazing performance of dairy cattle for winter rye, sorghum-sudangrass hybrid and oat including of rape in Hwa seong-gun, Kyeonggido, from 1993 to 1994. Each crops were utilized from the stage of 8-leaves to late blooming for sorghum-sudangrass, and from final leaves to soft dough for winter rye and oat plant. Under three different cropping system of winter rye-sorghum x sudangrass, spring oat-sorghum X sudangrass-autumn oat, and silage corn-autumn oat, a succeshl hehage production was available for grazing performance from April 26 to December 15, continuously. Annual dry matter yields for grazing allowance were 26.1 tontha in average of all cropping system. Autumn oat rnixtured with rape showed the highest herbage utilization with 91.6% grazing intensity and the lowest in sorghum-sudangrass with a value of 60.6- 69.1 %. Labor investment for herbage production were 805 hour in the cutting management and 339 hour per hectar in the grazing utilization.

Forage oat (Avena sativa L.) is grown extensively in a double-cropping system on dairy farms. Four oat varieties ('Swan', 'Targa', 'Foothill', and 'Nugene') were evaluated for forage production and forage quality during two growing seasons (spring and autumn) at two locations (central and southern region) in South Korea. The heading stage of four oat varieties was observed during spring, but the autumn season did not produce heading until harvest time except for the 'Swan' variety (early-maturing variety). The heading stage of 'Swan' in both locations was earlier compared to other varieties. The four varieties were resistant to both foliar disease and insects. Lodging resistance was higher during autumn except in 2002 at the central region, and late-maturing varieties ('Foothill' and 'Nugene') have lower lodging resistance. Dry matter (DM) content was significantly different between varieties (p<0.001). Comparing different varieties, 'Swan', an early-maturing variety, was highest in DM content. In DM, total digestible nutrients (TDN) and crude protein (CP) yield, the yield of oat varieties in the southern region was higher than in the central region, and forage yield of the oat varieties in the spring season was higher than during the autumn season. The DM and TDN yield showed significant differences between oat varieties. The CP content of oats grown in the central region (Cheonan) was lower than oats grown in the southern region (Daegu), and the spring season produced oats with lower CP compared to the autumn season. Among the four oat varieties, the CP content of late-maturing varieties was higher than the Swan variety (early-maturing variety). The acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents were higher for the varieties grown in Cheonan and during the spring season. The ADF and NDF contents of late-maturing varieties were lower than the early-maturing variety. TDN and relative feed value (RFV) were higher for the varieties grown in Daegu and during the autumn season. Late-maturing variety had higher TDN and RFV than early-maturing variety. Our study showed differences in forage production and forage quality of oats grown in different locations, seasons and varieties. Forage quality as well as forage production was better in the southern region than in the central region. Forage quality was better during autumn, but forage production was better during spring. Late-maturing variety had better forage quality than the early-maturing variety. Therefore, late-maturing varieties are more suitable for use in the southern region.

This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of quality and yield in potatoes grown at paddy field before rice transplantation during the spring season. Three potato cultivars ('Jowon', 'Haryeong', and 'Goun') were grown in Gangneung (asl 5 m) and Seocheon (asl 20 m). In both locations, weather condition belonged to the fourth zone (spring cropping) in potato production location's distribution of Korea. Daily mean soil temperature in both the locations was $0.2-0.6^{\circ}C$ lower than air temperature, while soil moisture was adequate level to potato growth in spite of spring drought. TR ratio was not affected by location, but by cultivar. Specific gravity, starch content, dry matter rate, and yield were significantly influenced by location and by cultivar. There was no difference in total tuber number by location, however there was a large gap in marketable tuber yield according to locations and cultivars. There were high negative relationships between yield and main qualities such as dry matter rate and starch content, while high positive correlation was observed between main qualities. It was possible to produce potato before rice transplanting at drained paddy fields located in representative two locations of potato spring cropping and their characteristics in growth and quality were similar to those generally well known in upland cultivation. Paddy field was thought to be more favorable than upland in terms of available soil moisture supply against spring drought. Further research, however, was needed to increase soil temperature and also preliminary review on proper cultivar according to location seemed to be needed for high yield.

In Korea, potatoes have served as a side dish, but their role as snacks, such as chips or French fries, has recently gained traction. While there is a high demand for processing potatoes, there remains a dearth of research on the impact of double cropping, particularly during autumn, on processing quality. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effects of different spring potato cultivation periods on growth, yield, and processing quality during autumn cultivation. Following spring planting, harvest was carried out four times: 70 days, 80 days, 90 days, and 100 days. Subsequently, autumn cultivation was carried out in Gangneung and Seocheon regions using these seed potatoes. Results showed an increase in above-ground emergence rate with shorter spring growing period. When seed potatoes with a spring cultivation period of 80 and 90 days were grown in the autumn in the Gangneung region, the stem length was 47.2 to 48.9, which was greater than that of other treatments. However, stem number and leaf color (SPAD) showed no significant differences across cultivation periods. The number of tubers, tuber weight, yield, and marketable yield did not vary significantly with cultivation periods but described clear cultivar dependent differences. The tuber weight of the Saebong cultivar in Gangneung and the Eunseon cultivar in Seocheon was superior. The starch content peaked at 7.9% when seed potatoes grown for 80 days in the spring were harvested after autumn cultivation in the Gangneung region, but there was no significant differences in the Seocheon region. Glucose content showed a clear difference depending on the cultivation period, increasing with longer spring cultivation period during autumn cultivation. In conclusion, as a result of the effect of the spring potato cultivation period on the growth, yield, and processing quality of tubers when cultivating potatoes in double-cropping, the differences depending on the cultivation period were insignificant, while cultivar-based disparities were pronounced. The Eunseon cultivar exhibited robust above-ground growth and yield, while the Saebong cultivar demonstrated excellent processing quality.
This experiment was conducted to select winter-adaptable crop system or cropping systems for an enhanced carbon (C) fixation amount in plant biomass and soil. Single or mixed cropping systems of green manure crops, rye (R), triticale (TC), hairy vetch (HV), TC+HV, and control (fallow) were investigated during winter and spring. The amount and content of C and N in the above-ground biomass and soil C content by soil depth were measured under different green manure crops. The above-ground biomass was highest in TC+HV followed by R and TC with 664, 585, and 545 kg $10a^{-1}$, which exceeded the biomass of control by 181, 160, and 149%, respectively. The amount of C accumulation was higher in soil surface than deep soil. which was a similar pattern to the above-ground biomass. Therefore, green manure cropping in winter and spring seasons will be very helpful of improve soil organic matter.
