  • Distribution of spray was measured. Optical Line Patternator (OLP) was used to measure the planar distribution of the spray from a swirl-coaxial type injector. Ambient pressure was varied and injection pressure was fixed in experiment. As ambient pressure increased, spray distribution was changed from hallow cone to solid cone shape, and spray angle was decreased. Limitation in measuring dense spray was found at high ambient pressure condition.

  • In order to investigate the spray characteristics according to diesel and bioethanol blending with biodiesel fuel, macroscopic spray characteristics were analyzed from the comparison of the effect of the injection pressure, ambient pressure and density on the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle. In addition, spray atomization characteristics were studied with local and overall Sauter mean diameter (SMD) and the contour map of SMD distribution at various injection conditions. It was revealed that the spray tip penetration of biodiesel fuels blended with diesel and ethanol was shorter than that of an undiluted biodiesel fuel at low injection pressure. However, the difference of spray tip penetration among three test fuels reduces at a high injection pressure. Increase of the ambient gas density leads to the decrease of the spray tip penetration of three test fuels. When diesel and ethanol fuels add to an undiluted biodiesel fuel, spray cone angle increases due to the decrease of the fuel density at the same ambient pressure condition. On the other hand, the droplet mean diameter decreases due to the reduction of the kinematic viscosity and surface tension.

  • The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure have been investigated in high temperature and pressure field. To analyze the structure of evaporative diesel spray is important in speculation of mixture formation process. Also emissions of diesel engines can be controlled by the analyzed results. Therefore, this study examines the evaporating spray structure by using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 72 MPa to 112 MPa with a high pressure injection system(ECD-U2). The PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique was used to capture flow variation of the evaporative diesel spray. A study on the mixture formation process of diesel spray was executed by the results of flow analysis in this study. Consequentially the large-scale vortex flow could be found in downstream spray and the formed vortex governs the mixture formation process in diesel spray.

  • The purpose of this study is the experimental and numerical investigation on the DME spray characteristics in the combustion chamber according to the injection timing in a common-rail injection system. The visualization system consisted of the high speed camera with metal halide lamp was used for analyzing the spray characteristics such as spray development processes and the spray tip penetration in the free and in-cylinder spray under various ambient pressure. In order to observe the spray characteristics as a function of injection timing, the piston head shape of re-entrant type was created and the fuel injected into the chamber according to various distance between nozzle tip and piston wall in consideration of injection timing. Also, the spray and evaporation characteristics in the cylinder was calculated by using KlVA-3V code for simulating spray development process and spray tip penetration under real engine conditions. It was revealed that the high ambient pressure of 3 MPa was led to delay the spray development and evaporation of DME spray. In addition, injected sprays after BTDC 20 degrees entered the bowl region and the spray at the BTDC 30 degrees was divided into two regions. In the calculated results, the liquefied spray tip penetration and fuel evaporation were shorter and more increased as the injection timing was retarded, respectively.

  • It is investigated of the DME spray characteristics about varied ambient pressure and fuel injection pressure using the common rail fuel injection system when the nozzle holes diameter is varied. The common rail fuel injection system and fuel cooling system is used since DME has compressibility and vaporization in atmospheric temperature. The fuel injection quantity and spray characteristics were measured. The spray was analyzed of spray shape, penetration length, and spray angle at the six nozzle holes. The 2 types injector were used, the one was 0.166 mm diameter the other one was 0.250 mm diameter. The ambient pressure which is based on gage pressure was 0 MPa, 2.5 MPa, and 5 MPa. The fuel injection pressure was varied by 5 MPa from 35 MPa to 70 MPa. When using the converted injector, compared to using the common injector, the DME injection quantity was increased 127 % but it didn't have the same heat release. Both of the common and converted injector had symmetric spray shapes. In case of converted injector, there were asymmetrical spray shapes until 1.2 ms, but after 1.2 ms the spray shape was symmetrical. Compared with the common and converted injector, the converted injector had shorter penetration length and wider spray angle than the common injector.

  • The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure in high temperature and pressure field have been investigated. The analysis of liquid and vapor phases of injected fuel is important for emissions control of diesel engines. Therefore, this work examines the evaporating spray structure using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 22 MPa to 112 MPa using a high pressure injection system (ECD-U2). Also, we conducted simulation study by modified KIVA-II code. The results of simulation study are compared with experimental results. The images of liquid and vapor phase for free spray were simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As experimental results, the vapor concentration of injected fuel is leaner due to the increase of atomization in the case of the high injection pressure than in that of the low injection pressure. The calculated results obtained by modified KIVA-II code show good agreements with experimental results.

  • Dimethyl Ether (DME) is an excellent alternative fuel that provides lower particulate matter (PM) than diesel fuel under the same engine operating conditions. Spray characteristical of DME in common rail injection system were investigated within a constant volume chamber by using the particle motion analysis system. The injector used in this study has a single hole with the different orifice diameter of 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 mm. The injection pressure was fixed at 35MPa and the ambient pressure was varied from 0.6 to 1.5 MPa. Spray characteristics such as spray angle, spray tip penetration and SMD (Sauter mean diameter) were measured. Spray angle was measured at 30d$_{0}$, downstream of the nozzle tip. The measured spray angie increased with increase in the ambient pressure. Increase of the ambient pressure results in a decrease of spray penetration. The experimental result, of spray penetration were compared with the predicted one by theoretical and empirical models. Increase in the ambient pressure and nozzle diameter results in an increase of SMD at a distance 30, 45 and 60d$_{0}$, downstream of the nozzle, respectively.ely.

  • In order to investigate the droplet size distribution and Sauter Mean Diameter in a ultra high pressure diesel spray, fuel was injected with ultra high pressure into the environments of high pressure and room temperature by an Electronic Hydraulic Fuel Injection System. Droplet size was measured with the immersion liquid sampling technique. The immersion liquid was used a mixture of water-methycellulose solution and ethanol. The Sauter Mean Diameter decreased with increasing injection pressure, with a decrease environmental pressure (back pressure) and nozzle diameter. Increasing the injection pressure makes the fuel density distribution of the spray more homogeneous. An empirical correlation was developed among injection pressure, air density, nozzle diameter and the Sauter Mean Diameter of spray droplets.

  • This article reports the experimental and numerical results for free sprays under ultra-high injection pressure conditions to give us better understandings of spray characteristics and also to make clear a limit pressure condition in diesel sprays. The high pressure injection system developed in this work is devised to reach ultra-high pressure conditions in the range from 150 MPa to 355 MPa. The free spray injected from a single nozzle injector is visualized by the Schlieren technique and the high speed camera. In particular, it is found that the shock waves are present and propagated along the edge of spray in the downstream direction. The measured spray penetration length increases gradually with the injection pressure, but its increasing rate is decreased as the injection pressure increases. The Sauter mean diameter is also no longer augmented for the injection pressures higher than 300 MPa. In addition, the threedimensional numerical simulations are conducted for comparing the measurements with the predictions based on two different breakup models. The TAB model results show better agreements with experimental data than the WAVE model under ultra-high injection pressure conductions. Moreover, the simulation results show that the gas-phase pressure increases substantially in the vicinity of the spray tip region. It supports the experimental observation that the shock waves are formed at the front of spray tip and are propagated downstream.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the global spray behavior and spray characteristics of high-pressure fuel injector in the direct-injection goasoline enginet. The atomization characteristics of fuel spary such as mean droplet size, mean velocity , and velocity distribution were measured by the phase Doppler particle analyzer. The spray tip penetration and spray width were investigated by the result fo visualizaiton experiment. The quantitiative spary characteristics of injector spray were measured under various sparay conditions and ambient pressures. The results of experiment show that the increase in ambient pressure have influence on the spray tip penetration and spray development process. Also, the influence of injection pressure and measuring location on the mean velocity and droplet size distribution were discussed.
