FT process is a technology of chemical reactions that converts a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen into liquid hydrocarbons. During the FT process unreacted gas, known as Off-gas which has low-calorie, is discharged. In this study, we developed an engine that utilize simulated Off-gas, and studied the characteristics of the engine. The off-gas composition is assumed to be $H_2$ 70%, CO 15%, $CO_2$ 15% respectively. Under stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, the experiment was conducted at WOT and IMEP 0.3 Mpa changing compression ratio. Ignition timing was applied with MBT timing. Maximum indicated thermal efficiency 37% was achieved at compression ratio 15 under WOT. CO, $CO_2$ and $NO_x$ were influenced by changing compression ratio, and CO emission was satisfied with the US Tier 4 standard for nonroad engine over the entire experimental conditions.
Computational fluid dynamics was used to optimize an A/C duct. Three dimensional flow analysis in an automotive A/C duct was performed computationally using various turbulence models and compared numerical predictions such as outlet flow split, surface pressure distribution along the duct to experimental data. Additionally, we studied the effect of location variation of 2nd branch on exit flow ratio and could find optimal location of 2nd branch. The design of an A/C duct was modeled and calculated to enhance the airflow distribution in each outlet using the STAR-CD computational fluid dynamics software. In results, modified $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model allows a successful prediction of static pressure distribution particulary at around strong curvature but little improvement flow split. In the future, adoption of CFD to design an A/C duct with modified $k-\varepsilon$ model will bring benefits of producing more accurate prediction, and also give designers more detail information much more than now.
It is well known that drag reduction in single phase liquid flow is affected by polymer material, molecular weight, polymer concentration, pipe diameter, and flow velocity. Drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to present cavitation which occurs in pump impellers. But the research of drag reduction in two phase flow is not sufficient. The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the drag reduction by measuring pressure drop, void fraction whether polymer is added in the horizontal two phase system or not. Experiment has been conducted in a test section with 24 m of the inner diameter and 1,500 mm of the length. The used polymer materials are two kinds of polyacrylamide[PAAM] and co-polymer[A611P]. The polymer concentration was varied with 50, 100 and 200 ppm under the same experimental conditions. Experimental results were shown that the drag is higher reduced by co-polymer rather than polyanylamide.
The present study investigated the forms and behaviors of fuel during intake and compression process, and the initial flame stability in a lean burn engine modified as a single cylinder engine equipped with quartz windows for visualization. PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) method with KrF Excimer laser was used for measuring the fuel distributions. The principal design concept of the lean burn nin in this study is the axial stratification in the fuel distribution via fuel injection during intake process and different shapes of intake ports; helical and straight. The experiments showed that fuel flowed in as a vapor state in the early part of intake process and lots of this mixture mated down along the intake valve side cylinder wall, but in the latter part, a lot of fuel flowed in as a liquid state and this fuel stayed in the upper part of cylinder, after that the dense fuel cloud moved upward in the early of part compression process. It became clear that the fuel flowed in via straight port had a important role in the axial fuel stratification.
An object of this study is to understand the correlation of injection characteristics and injector dimensions according to biodiesel mixture. The Injection characteristics of different types of common-rail injectors are the number of nozzle holes (5~8), jet cone angle ($146^{\circ}{\sim}153^{\circ}$), hydraulic flow rate (830~900 ml/min) injection quantity and response time. Prior to characteristic experiment, the reference injector has been selected in 6 candidates injectors under the investigation of injected quantity according to the biodiesel mixture so that injector type can be determined. The injector is used for the characteristic experiment which varied the various operating conditions including pressure 23 MPa, 80 MPa, 160 MPa, changing in injection duration 0.16 ms~1.2 ms and even mixture ratio. The result shows that the nozzle hole number and cone angle influence the injection quantity much more than nozzle hole diameter at low injection pressure and the nozzle hole diameter at high injection pressure, post injection duration.
The objective of this study is to develop the new equations for the calculation of higher heating values(HHVs) of reformed diesel fuels by ultrasonic treatment. Therefore, higher heating values of reformed diesel fuels by ultrasonic treatment are determined experimentally and calculated from their viscosity and surface tension measurements. The HHVs of the fuels are supposed to be a function of viscosity(Pa s) and surface tension(N/cm). The equations developed for the samples represent the correlation obtained by means of regression analysis. The HHVs calculated by developing new equations using viscosities showes the differences from the measured values ranging from -0.66 to 1.19 % and the correlation coefficient was -0.9411. The HHVs calculated by developing new equations using surface tensions showed the differences from the measured values ranging from -0.70 to 1.51 % and the correlation coefficient was 0.9999. The viscosity and the surface tension are characteristic properties of ultrasonic reformed diesel fuels for developing new formulae.
Previous studies on image processing techniques for panicle size measurement usually have focused on a single panicle or weakly overlapped particles. In the present work, the image processing algorithm for particle size measurement has been improved to process heavily-overlapped spherical-particle images. The algorithm consists of two steps; detection of boundaries which separate the images of the overlapped panicles from the background and the panicle identification process. For the first step, Sobel operator (using gray-level gradient) and the thinning process was adopted, and compared with the gray-level thresholding method that has been widely adopted. In the second, Hough transform was used. Hough transform is the detection algorithm of parametric curves such as straight lines or circles which can be described by several parameters. To reduce the measurement error, the process of finding the true center was added. The improved algorithm was tested by processing an image frame which contains heavily overlapped spherical panicles. The results showed that both the performances of detecting the overlapped images and separating the panicle from them were improved.
The present study is aiming at improving the performance of main nozzle of an air jet loom with a modified reed and auxiliary nozzles. The double coaxial pipe jets consisting of a central air jet and an annular air jet have been experimentally investigated. The duter jet has a potential core and a constant velocity. The inner jet through an inner long pipe is induced by the subatmospheric pressure near the inner nozzle edge, and the jet velocity of an inner pipe is always lower than that of a outer pipe. The static pressures of the main nozzle over a wide range of the nozzle tank pressure were measured, and the nozzle velocity and Mach numbers were analytically calculated. Experiment81 results indicate that the critical condition of Mach number of unity to occur at the two positions in a main nozzle; one of them is the needle tip and the other is the acceleration tube exit An increase in the tank pressure causes the critical throat condition to occur at the two positions above. The velocity of acceleration-tube exit is maximum at the critical length L* and flow patter in acceleration-tube over critical lengh remains unstable.
Effect of reentrant type bowl geometry on combustion characteristics was investigated in a D.1.diesel engine. The main factor was the aspect ratio (Bowl Diameter/Bowl Depth) of bowl of combustion chamber, and the measured data include the cylinder pressure, engine performance and emissions of the engine using the 4 kinds of the combustion chamber. Experimental results indicate that the effect of dc/H and nozzle protrusion are relatively small and there exists an optimum dc/H according to the combustion conditions. It is also found that the smoke emission is quite sensitive the overall combustion time where the 90 percentage of the combustion heat is released. The smoke mission increases by shortening the 90% combustion time while it decreases by delaying the 90% combustion time.
The liquid phase LPG injection (LPLI) system is considered as one of the next generation fuel supply systems for LPG, vehicles, since it can accomplish the higher power, higher efficiency, and lower emission characteristics than the existing mixer type fuel supply system. However, during the injection of liquid LPG fuel into the inlet duct of an engine, a large quantity of heat is extracted due to evaporation of fuel. A problem is that the moisture in the air freezes around the outlet of a nozzle, which is called icing Phenomenon. It may cause damage to the outlet nozzle of an injector. The frozen ice deposit detached from the nozzle also may cause a considerable damage to the inlet valve or valve seat. In this work, the experimental investigation of the icing phenomenon was carried out. The results showed that the icing phenomenon and process were mainly affected by humidity of inlet air instead of the air temperature in the inlet duct. Also, it was observed that the icing occurs first in the inlet of a nozzle, and grows considerably at the upper part of the nozzle inlet and the opposite side of the nozzle entrance. An LPG fuel, mainly consisting of butane, has lower latent heat of vaporization than that of propane, which is an advantage in controlling the icing phenomenon.
