  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the spray characteristics of non-circular effervescent twin-fluid nozzles. For this purpose, two types of non-circular nozzles (E1, E2) and circular nozzle (C) were used. Three types of aerorators with hole diameters of 1.2, 1.7 and 2.1 mm were used. Each aerorator has a total of 12 holes. It is defined by area ratio which is ratio of exit orifice area and aerator hole area. Experiments were carried out by controlling the amount of air flowing after fixing the flow rate of the liquid, and the nozzle internal pressure and SMD were measured, and the jet image was taken from the nozzles. The discharge coefficients of the three kinds of nozzles were compared with the used in plain orifice's equation and the Jedelsky's equation, and the Jedelsky's equation was found to be about 3 times larger. In addition, empirical formula based on ALR, which is the largest variable in Jedelsky's equation, was derived. The droplet sizes(SMD) were found to be smaller in the non-circular shape than in the circular shape, which is concluded to be caused by the difference of the discharge coefficients.

  • The characteristics of the fuel quantity, injection rate and macro spray development was investigated under a range of diesel fuel temperatures. The actual injection quantity decreased despite the same signal of the injection start and injection duration as the fuel temperature decreased. The injection rate measurements confirmed that the actual injection commencement was delayed and the actual injection duration was shortened under lower fuel temperature conditions, which explains why the injection quantity decreased. Spray tip penetration with a lower fuel temperature was longer than that with a higher fuel temperature due to the deteriorated atomization. As a pre-test for the combustion experiment under low temperature conditions, piston targeting with pilot injection was accomplished, which showed that the fuel droplet from pilot injection was introduced into the crevice area. This suggests that the pilot injection quantity and timing should be chosen with careful consideration for actual applications.

  • In the development of the liquid rocket engine using the pintle injector, spray characteristics such as spray angle, droplet size, and distribution of the droplets are dominant parameters. Three different kind of multi hole type pintle tip and a continuous type pintle tip were designed. In the case of multi hole pintle tip, SMD result did not have a significant difference depending on the number of holes. In analysis with visualization images, however, the droplets were uniformly distributed as the number of holes increased. Liquid droplets from continuous type pintle tip were finely atomized and dispersed uniformly than those from multi-hole type pintle tip. In addition, the thrust control by adjusting the liquid injection area of the pintle is suitable for the continuous type, which is easier to face-shutoff rather than the multi hole type. The spray angle of each pintle tip according to TMR was measured to derive a specific tendency and corresponding empirical formula.

  • $SrAl_2O_4:Eu$ green phosphor was prepared by spray pyrolysis and its luminescence properties were controlled by replacing the Al sites with boron and using organic modifier or drying control chemical additive. It was clear that the substitution of B into the Al sites was helpful to obtain pure monoclinic $SrAl_2O_4$ phase and greatly enhance the emission intensity. In terms of the emission intensity, the optimal content of boron was about 1 at% with respect to the aluminum element. The luminescence intensity of $Sr_{0.9}Al_{1.98}B_{0.02}O_4:Eu_{0.1}$ phosphor could be improved by the use of 0.2 M organic additives in the spray solution. Futhermore, using 0.5 M dimethylformamide(DMF) as a drying control chemical with organic additives made it possible to improve about 172% the emission intensity of $Sr_{0.9}Al_{1.98}B_{0.02}O_4:Eu_{0.1}$ phosphor. According to XRD analysis, the organic additive and DMF used enhanced the crystallinity without any change in the crystal phase. When used only the organic additive without DMF, the surface area of the prepared $Sr_{0.9}Al_{1.98}B_{0.02}O_4:Eu_{0.1}$ phosphor became enlarged. The use of DMF with the organic additive resulted in significant reduction in the surface area. It was concluded that the increase of the crystallinity as well as the reduction of surface area mainly contribute to the improvement in the luminescence intensity of $Sr_{0.9}Al_{1.98}B_{0.02}O_4:Eu_{0.1}$ phosphor prepared using DMF and organic additives.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a standard amount of pesticide per unit area of the lumber over the sea level. This establishment is required in applying the sea water dipping disinfection method to the imported soft woods to control the pests living on the surface of the lumber. The major findings of this study are as follows; 1. The average length and diameter of the imported soft wood was respectively 11.12m and 76.46Cm. 2. The average cubic content of the lumber over the sea level to the whole cubic content was 20.82 percent. 3. The ratio of the lumber over the sea level to the whole cubic content was 2.3356 at the $95\%$ significance level. 4. The sampling error of the ratio of the area of the lumber over the sea level to the cubic content was lower in the case of the pieces of lumber in a vessel than the average between ten tressels. 5. The optimum amount of pesticide spray per $1\;M^2$ of the soft wood was 0.298 cc in the case of using the hand spray, but 0.245 cc the motor spray. 6. For example, in the case of applying the sea water dipping disinfection method to the 5,000 $M^3$ of the imported soft wood, the required amount of pesticide with a motor spray can be estimated as follow. $$5,000\;M^3\times2.333=11,678\;M^2$$ $$11,678M^2\times0.295=3,445cc$$.

  • Experimental analysis of the spray characteristics of the movable sleeve injector, which can simultaneously control the area of the annular gap and the pintle gap, has been studied and a method for controlling the uniform performance over a wide thrust range has been studied. It is confirmed that the design flow rate is not satisfied when the constant pressure difference is set regardless of the opening distance of the sleeve. In order to improve this, the differential pressure in the annular gap and the pintle gap was applied differently according to the opening distance. It was confirmed that the design flow rate was satisfied within the operating range and thrust control was linear from 25% to 100% in linear sleeve area.

  • The experiments were carried out in fields for two years from 2008 to assess yield losses of squash due to powdery mildew caused by Sphaerotheca fuliginea and to determine its economic thresholds. Powdery mildew disease was first observed in late June, about 50 days after field-transplanting, progressed rapidly during late July to early August, and began to reduce from late August. Powdery mildew severity was negatively correlated with squash yields. A positive correlation was observed between fruit weight and % marketable fruits. A simple linear regression model was obtained as Y=-10.399 X + 6607.5 with $R^2$ = 0.9700 when squash yields (Y) was predicted using powdery mildew severity as an independent variable(X). Spray threshold for maximizing squash yields without economic considerations was estimated as 6.5% in terms of leaf lesion area with powdery mildew. Economic threshold and economic spray threshold able to compensate the costs of fungicide sprays were determined as 21.6% and 17.3% in leaf lesion area, respectively.

  • This study involves using nickel chloride solution as a raw material to produce nano-sized nickel oxide powder with average particle size below 50 nm by the spray pyrolysis reaction. The influence of the inflow speed of raw material solution on the properties of the produced powder is examined. When the inflow speed of the raw material solution is at 2 ml/min., the average particle size of the powder is 15~25 nm and the particle size distribution is relatively uniform. When the inflow speed of the solution increases to 10 ml/min., the average particle size of the powder increases to about 25 nm and the particle size distribution becomes much more uneven. When the inflow speed of the solution increases to 20 ml/min., the average particle size of the powder increases in comparison to the case in which the inflow speed of the solution was 10 ml/min. However, the particle size distribution is very uneven, showing various particle size distributions ranging from 10 nm to 70 nm. When the inflow speed of solution increases to 50 ml/min., the average particle size of the powder decreases in comparison to the case in which the inflow speed was 20 ml/min., and the particle size distribution shows more evenness. As the inflow speed of the solution increases from 2 ml/min. to 20 ml/min., the XRD peak intensities gradually increase, while the specific surface area decreases. When the inflow speed of solution increases to 50 ml/min., the XRD peak intensities rather decrease, while the specific surface area increases.

  • Background: Stress causes inflammation that impairs intestinal barrier function. Dietary spray-dried plasma (SDP) has recognized anti-inflammatory effects and improvement of gut barrier function. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary SDP on intestinal morphology of mated female mice under stress condition. Results: Villus height, width, and area of small intestines were low on gestation day (GD) 3 or 4 under stress conditions, and higher later (Time, P < 0.05). Crypt depth of colon was low on GD 4 and higher later (Time, P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the SDP treatments improved (P < 0.05) intestinal morphology, indicated by increased villus height, villus width, villus area, and ratio between villus height and crypt depth of small intestines and crypt depth of colon, and by decreased crypt depth of small intestines, compared with the control diet. The SDP treatments also increased (P < 0.05) the number of goblet cells in intestines compared with the control diet. There were no differences between different levels of SDP. Conclusion: Dietary SDP improves intestinal morphology of mated female mice under stress condition.

  • MgO based nanocomposite powder including ferromagnetic iron particle dispersions, which can be available for the magnetic and catalytic applications, was fabricated by the spray pyrolysis process using ultra-sonic atomizer and reduction processes. Liquid source was prepared from iron (Fe)-nitrate, as a source of Fe nano-dispersion, and magnesium (Mg)-nitrate, as a source of MgO materials, with pure water solvent. After the chamber were heated to given temperatures (500~$^800{\circ}C$), the mist of liquid droplets generated by ultrasonic atomizer carried into the chamber by a carrier gas of air, and the ist was decomposed into Fe-oxide and MgO nano-powder. The obtained powders were reduced by hydrogen atmosphere at 600~$^800{\circ}C$. The reduction behavior was investigated by thermal gravity and hygrometry. After reduction, the aggregated sub-micron Fe/MgO powders were obtained, and each aggregated powder composed of nano-sized Fe/MgO materials. By the difference of the chamber temperature, the particle size of Fe and MgO was changed in a few 10 nm levels. Also, the nano-porous Fe-MgO sub-micron powders were obtained. Through this preparation process and the evaluation of phase and microstructure, it was concluded that the Fe/MgO nanocomposite powders with high surface area and the higher coercive force were successfully fabricated.
