  • The NAUT (Non-contact Air coupled Ultrasonic Testing) technique is one of the ultrasonic testing methods that enables non-contact ultrasonic testing by compensating for the energy loss caused by the difference in acoustic impedance of air with an ultrasonic pulser receiver, PRE-AMP and high-sensitivity transducer. As the NAUT is performed in a state of steady ultrasonic transmission and reception, testing can be performed on materials of high or low temperatures or specimens with a rough surface or narrow part, which could not have been tested using the conventional contact-type testing technique. For this study, the internal defects of spot weld, which are often applied to auto parts, and CFRP parts, were tested to determine if it is practical to make the NAUT technique commercial. As the spot welded part had a high ultrasonic transmissivity, the result was shown as red. On the other hand, the part with an internal defect had a layer of air and low transmissivity, which was shown as blue. In addition, depending on the PRF (Pulse Repetition Frequency), an important factor that determines the measurement speed, the color sharpness showed differences. With the images obtained from CFRP specimens or an imaging device, it was possible to identify the shape, size and position of the internal defect within a short period of time. In this paper, it was confirmed in the above-described experiment that both internal defect detection and image processing of the defect could be possible using the NAUT technique. Moreover, it was possible to apply NAUT to the detection of internal defects in the spot welded parts or in CFRP parts, and commercialize its practical application to various fields.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of resin infiltration technique on color and surface hardness of white spot lesion (WSL) with various degrees of demineralization. Materials and Methods: Ten human upper premolars were cut and divided into quarters with a $3{\times}4mm$ window on the enamel surface. Each specimens were separated into four groups (n = 10) and immersed in demineralization solution to create WSL: control, no treatment (baseline); 12 h, 12 hr demineralization; 24 h, 24 hr demineralization; 48 h, 48 hr demineralization. Resin infiltration was performed to the specimens using Icon (DMG). $CIEL^*a^*b^*$ color parameters of the enamel-dentin complex were determined using a spectroradiometer at baseline, after caries formation and after resin infiltration. Surface hardness was measured by Vickers Micro Hardness Tester (Shimadzu, HMV-2). The differences in color and hardness among the groups were analyzed with ANOVA followed by Tukey test. Results: Resin infiltration induced color changes and increased the hardness of demineralized enamel. After resin infiltration, there was no difference in color change (${\Delta}E^*$) or microhardness among the groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There was no difference in the effect of resin infiltration on color and hardness among groups with different extents of demineralization.

  • Wire codes, introduced by Wertheimer and Leeper, are interesting largely because several case-control studies have reported associations between them and certain types of cancers, including childhood leukemia. This paper is concerned with the reliability of wire codes as a surrogate for residential electric and magnetic field, divided into four categories based on the electrical wiring within 40m of homes. To examine the correlation between spot measurements and wire codes, EMF was measured by using HI-3604 and classified by wire codes. The correlation between long-transformed RMS of magnetic field and wire codes was 0.81. But the correlation between log-transformed RMS of electric field and wire codes was 0.27. The results led us to determine a four category from of the Wertheimer and Leeper code that 1) may be useful in domestic epidemiological studies and 2) is not suitable for electric field exposure. Thus, the critical point of exposure assessment in residential magnetic field is to classify a wire code precisely.

  • With the recent increase in the use among young children of portable telephone public concern regarding potential health hazards due to a hot spot appearing inside the infant head, has been growing. Since the biological hazards due to RF exposure are caused mainly by a temperature-rise in tissue, the effect of localized SAR for portable telephones should also be related to the temperature-rise in the human head. In this paper, it was measured that in the actual use of portable telephone the temperature of the local tissue in the human-head change. As a result, it should be noted that the mean temperature of human-body and localized tissue is rising from beginning call. However the temperature variation of localized tissue is recovered rapidly as normal temperature, although the mean temperature of human-body rising continuously at ending call of portable telephone.

  • In this paper, an algorithm based on a model analysis of the online calculation of the root-mean-square (RMS) value of welding current for single-phase AC resistance spot welding (RSW) was developed. The current is highly nonlinear and typically non-sinusoidal, which makes the measuring and controlling actions difficult. Though some previous methods focused on this issue, they were so complex that they could not be effectively used in general cases. The electrical model of a single-phase AC RSW was analyzed, and then an algorithm for online calculation of the RMS value of the welding current was presented. The description includes two parts, a model-dependent part and a model-independent part. Using a previous work about online measurement of the power factor angle, the first part can be solved. For the second part, although the solution of the governing equation can be directly obtained, a lot of CPU time must be consumed due to the fact that it involves a lot of complex calculations. Therefore, a neural network was employed to simplify the calculations. Finally, experimental results and a corresponding analysis showed that the proposed algorithm can obtain the RMS values with a high precision while consuming less time when compared to directly solving the equations.

  • From the Beckmann's reflection model of wave incident, reflected light from a surface is known to have not only specular but also diffuse components. The specular component dominant a surface for a mirror-like surface is distributed on the almost the same area as the spot on the surface, but the diffuse component region dominant f3r a rough surface spreads scattered on the larger areas than the spot. Therefore, statistic parameters from the scattered light distribution are more meaningful in the diffuse region, while the magnitude of rather meaning in the specular region. In usual, there need two sensors to acquire two kinds of information: Photo-detector for light intensity magnitude and image sensor for light intensity distribution. But dual sensor scheme requires a beam splitter usually to feed light to each sensor, and moreover there is not a combination rule to relieve the different sensor characteristics. In this study a new method is proposed for acquisition of the dual information using only an image sensor. Specular region is established on an image area being distinguished from a diffuse component, and laser power is adjusted so that no pixel of the image sensor in the specular region is saturated. Simulation based on the light reflection theory and the experimental results are quite well matched, and thus the proposed method was proved to be very useful for mirror-like surface measurement.

  • The demand for lightweight materials and high-strength steel has rapidly increased to help reduce the weight of a vehicle body; it improves the fuel efficiency of automobiles and provides passenger safety. Additionally, as the material becomes thinner, the demand for its resistance against corrosion becomes higher. Hence, the application of the surface-treated steel sheet has surged rapidly. In this study, a weld bonding experiment using a delta spot welding machine is performed on a thin sheet of a different material (Al6061-T6/GA440). The thickness of the material was kept at 1 mm to reduce the weight of the automobile body parts. Additionally, the purpose of this study is to control the heat input by applying the welding conditions of a multi-stage pressure pattern to improve corrosion resistance shear strength. The analysis of nugget diameter measurement, shear tensile test, and salt spray test was performed to achieve the aim.

  • The quench detection system of the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) primarily uses the resistive voltage measurement due to a quench. This method is to detect the resistive voltage generated by a quench, which is continuously maintained above the preset voltage threshold for a given holding time. As the KSTAR PF (Poloidal Field) coils are operated in the pulse current mode, the large inductive voltages are generated. Therefore the voltage threshold and the quench holding time should be determined by considering both the inductive voltages measured during the operation, and the maximum conductor temperature rise through the quench analysis. In this paper, the compensation methods for minimizing the inductive voltages are presented for the KSTAR PF coils. The quench hot spot analysis of the PF coils was carried out by the analytical and numerical methods for determining the proper values of the quench voltage threshold and the allowable quench protection delay time.

  • In this paper, we have extended the research on the infrared sensor which has been limited to the plane. The reflection mechanism of the light on the curved surface is analyzed according to the curvature change and the emitted angle of photodiode and verified through experiments. The difference in the curvature causes a difference in the measurement distance, and also changes the intensity of the light coming into the phototransistor, thereby causing a difference in the output voltage. However, the difference in the output voltage due to the curvature change can be solved by adjusting the emitted angle of the photodiode to minimize the spot area formed on the curved surface regardless of the curvature. Therefore, it is possible to measure the distance by using the infrared sensor regardless of the curvature by aligning the photodiode to the center of the curved surface and adjusting the angle of the photodiode.
