A Study on the Evaluation of Weldability Using Ultrasonic in Thin Spot Welding (초음파를 이용한 미세저항용접에서의 용접성 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Thin spot welding is frequently used for industrial purpose, such as automobile and aerospace industries and household appliances due to its high performance. In these days, the systemization of welding process made it possible to produce more precise or smaller electric parts. And when it comes to welding of steel sheets, the size of nugget must be getting smaller. Therefore, welding conditions are limited to avoid defects, such as deformation, damage and weakening of joining area. In this research, thin spot welding establishes the welding conditions, and then the measurement of the nugget size by the nondestructive inspection has been conducted. As a result, the right estimation of the nugget size, the detection of corona bond near joining area, the selection of the optimum ultrasonic mode, and setup for ultrasonic inspection are studied. From the trustworthy solutions of the nugget size estimated by results of measurement, the optimum inspection conditions depending upon the width of welding parts are determined as well.

Characteristics of Drawing and Concurrent Spot Welding of Overlapped Aluminum Plates with Copper Electrodes Inserted in Heated Dies (가열된 금형에 삽입된 구리전극에 의한 중첩된 알루미늄 합금판재의 드로잉성형 동시 점용접 특성)

  • In this study, a new spot welding with electric resistance heated dies is suggested for the spot welding of non-ferrous metal plates for drawing and concurrent spot welding. This welding method involves two heating processes such as heating by conduction of electric resistance heated dies and heating by resistance between contacted surfaces of two plates by welding current induced to copper dies for the fusion of contacted metal. This welding process has welding variables such as current induced in heated and copper dies, the inner diameters of heated dies, and edge shape of the copper dies. Experimental conditions for each current should be established to get successful welding strength. The welding strength could reach to the desired value in industrial fields under the following conditions of contact diameters of heated dies in this case of overlapped aluminum5052 plates with 0.3-mm thickness: inner and outer diameters of 5.0 and 16mm, respectively; diameter of copper dies, 5.0mm; heating current, 6.8kA in heated steel dies; welding current, 8.6 kA in copper dies.

  • With increasing demand of energy saving, -many efforts were made to employ aluminium alloys in the automobile industry. Especially, resistance spot welding has been widely used in the steel metal joining process because of its high productively and convenience. In this paper, spot weldability of 7075-T6 aluminium thin sheets for various welding conditions were examined by series of experiments. The tensile shear strength and microstructure of welded specimens was observed, and The optimal welding conditions were found for each welding conditions.

  • Many microelectronic devices are miniaturizing the capacitance density and the size of the capacitor. Along with this miniaturization of electronic circuits, tantalum (Ta) capacitors have been on the market due to its large demands worldwide and advantages such as high volumetric efficiency, low temperature coefficient of capacitance, high stability and reliability. During a tantalum capacitor manufacturing process, arc welding has been used to weld base frame and sub frame. This arc welding may have limitations since the downsizing of the weldment depends on the size of welding electrode and the contact time may prevent from improving productivity. Therefore, to solve these problems, this study applies laser spot welding to weld nickel (Ni) and Au-Sn-Ni alloy using CW IR fiber laser with lap joint geometry. All laser parameters are fixed and the only control variable is laser irradiance time. Four different shapes, such as no melting upper workpiece, asymmetric spherical-shaped weldment, symmetric weldment, and, excessive weldment, are observed. This shape may be due to different temperature distribution and flow pattern during the laser spot cutting.

  • A simplified analysis method is proposed in this paper, through which the deformation due to spot welding is obtained. In order to analyze the spot welding process, the finite elements are axisymmetrically modeled, and the results from them are used for analyzing the deformation of spot welded structure. It takes more little time in this simplified analysis than the analysis by 3-D continuum elements, and this analysis produces the results that nearly agree with the measured data.

A Study on Welding Strength of Extru-Riveting Process of Aluminum Plates (알루미늄 판재의 압출점접합공정에 있어서 접합강도에 관한 연구)

  • It was studied that two plates of aluminum can be welded by extru-riveting experiments with extru-rivet welding dies, and that the welding strength and metal flow on the welding section were analyzed by computer simulation according to the welding variable such as the diameter of extrusion insert dies. It was known by computer simulation that welding strength on the welding section of plates could be influenced by the diameter of extrusion insert dies. And it was known by experiments that two plates of aluminum can be welded on a spot point on aluminum plate by extru-rivet welding process, and that welding strength is higher and higher if the diameter of extrusion insert die is smaller and smaller, and that welding strength is the highest when diameter of extrusion insert dies is ${\emptyset}4.2$mm in the case that the diameter of rivet is 5 mm, when aluminum 5052 two plates with 1.5 mm thickness and one plate with 3mm thickness for rivet plate are used as welding material.

  • Due to the environmental problem, automotive companies are trying to reduce the weight of car body. Therefore, WP(Transformation Induced Plasticity) steels, which are hish strength and ductility have been developed. The application of TRIP steel to the members has been reported to increase the energy absorption capability. Welding process is a complex process; therefore deciding the optimal welding conditions is an effective method on the basis of the experimental data. However, using a trial-and-error method from the beginning in such a wide area, in order to decide the optimal conditions requires too many numbers of experiments. To overcome these problems and to decide the optimal conditions, response surface methodology was used. Response surface methodology is a collection of mathematical and statistical techniques that are for the modeling and analysis of problems in which a response of interest is influenced by several variables and the objective is to optimize this response. The introduced method was applied to the resistance spot welding process of the TRIP steel and the welding parameters were optimized. (Received December 6, 2002)

  • Resistance spot welding is one of the most widely used processes in sheet metal fabrication. Quality assurance of welding has been important to increase the productivity. In this study, weld quality estimation using primary circuit dynamic resistance applied to the in-process real-time systems. For quality estimation, factors relating to quality were extracted from the dynamic resistance, measured in the timer. The relationship between these factors and weld quality was determined through a artificial neural network model. This method has the advantage over the conventional one, such as obtaining the quality information without the use of extra devices.

  • Resistance spot welding is widely employed in a manufacturing process. In recent years, the requirement for more sophisticated quality control procedures has been in mass production industries. The requirements for high productivity and better weld qualities have lead to the development of more widely available microcomputer-based control. In this study, the inverter type power source and welding servo gun are developed. As the results, we have some advantages over the previous methods such as pneumatic gun. One of them is that the precise pressure control can be attained during the welding process. In addition, production time and cost can be decreased.

  • This paper considers a six sigma project for improving the TIP life time in a spot welding process. The project follows a disciplined process of five phases: define, measure, analyze, improve, and control. A process map is used to identify process input and output variables. Nine key process input variables are selected by using C&E matrix and FMEA, and finally four vital few input variables are selected from analyze phase. The optimum process conditions of the vital few input variables are jointly obtained by maximizing TIP life time using DOE and alternative selection method.
