Background: Community ambulation has been recently recognized as one of the most essential factors of activities of daily living in patients with post-stroke hemiparesis. This study aimed to compare walking velocity and step number in 5 community situations in patients with post-stroke hemiparesis. Methods: Ten chronic stroke patients volunteered for this study. The main variables analyzed were walking speed and step number, and these were measured in 5 different community situations: a physical therapy room, a parking lot, a bank, a crosswalk, and a hospital lobby. The measurements obtained for walking in the physical therapy room were measured using a 10m walk test and were used as baseline data for comparison with each option. The ambulation distance was set at 300m for the parking lot and the bank and 150m for the crosswalk and hospital lobby. For data analysis, walking speed and step number were standardized with the distance options of each ambulation. Results: Compared to the walking speed in the physical therapy room, those in the other situations, except for the parking lot, were significantly different (p<.05). Moreover, there were significant differences in the speeds between the bank and the parking lot and between the parking lot and the crosswalk (p<.05). Compared to the step number in the physical therapy room, those in all situations except for the crosswalk were significantly different (p<.05). Further, there was a significant difference in the step number between the bank and the crosswalk (p<.05). Conclusion: The walking ability of patients with hemiparesis in real environments within a community could be different from that in a physical therapy room. Therefore, the evaluation of walking should be performed in a variety of community situations.

Taping techniques have been usually used by physical therapists long time ago, which have been considered a useful adjunct to treatment programs for a variety of musculoskeletal disorders. Also, taping techniques may be employed as effective prophylactic methods in clinical setting because of ease application and cost effectiveness. The aims of this study were to describe background information for the management of some chronic low back pain patients with/without leg pain that don't respond to conservative treatment, to demonstrate McConnell taping as successful therapeutic strategies for treating these patients, and to provide detailed application methods of McConnell taping in order that physical therapists can readily use the taping in clinical setting. This study emphasized to illustrate biomechanical benefits of McConnell taping in controlling undesirable muscle activation by decreasing mechanical loads on specific muscles. McConnell taping may be helpful for the inhibition of overactive synergist or antagonists, the facilitation of inactive synergists, the promotion of proprioception, the optimization of joint alignment, pain reduction, and unloading of irritable neural tissue. This study provides taping examples of low back pain, sacroiliac joint dysfunction and lower extremity symptoms associated with these conditions, and discusses the possible mechanisms for their successful application.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the sports injuries of korea women hockey players before and during the international KT Cup game This study was done by survey questions about injuries of 20 players. But the types during game appeared as contusion ($50\%$), ligament injury ($33.3\%$), muscular strain ($16.7\%$). 2. Before game regions of injuries are lower limbs ($45.5\%$), back/torso ($36.4\%$), upper limbs ($18.2\%$). But the regions during game appeared as upper limbs ($71.4\%$), lower limbs ($28.6\%$). 3. During the game, the injuries were caused by ball ($66\%$), collision ($17\%$), that fall ($17\%$). These results indicate the importance that players need enough stretching before they start exercise. Also, in order to protect their upper limbs, players must wear gloves before games
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to know sports injury aspects and relationship between exercise stress, tension, exercise habits and sports injuries. Methods : We surveyed 42 professional golf players who attended Korea Tour during the second half of the year 2010 and have sports injuries with self - assessment questionnaires. Results : According to the types, they had myalgia, tendonitis, ligament sprain in the order. According to the body parts, they had injuries in right thoracic, left cervical, left shoulder region in the order. As a result of the analysis of the sports injury frequency according to the exercise stress and tension, there were no significant differences between the high and low level group. But result of injury regions showed high tension level group showed more damages in right thoracic region (p<0.05). Exercise habits appear subjects had lots of training time, however, they used to skip the muscular strengthening exercise during the on season, but had no significant difference between sports injury frequencies and exercise habit. Conclusion : For the improvement of the athletic performance and prevention of the sports injury, warming-up, cooling-down and muscular strengthening exercise program developments are needed.
Purpose: This paper was to review the concept of rehabilitation sports for the disabled. Method: This paper was reviewed related papers published by KODDI(Korea Disabled People's Development Institute) concerning rehabilitation sports. Result: Rehabilitation sports that is integration of rehabilitation therapy and sports, was introduced in the U.K. during the World War I for the people wounded in the war. Since then, it was introduced into Germany for the wounded and disabled, and institutionalized in public health insurance program since 1960s. The present day, rehabilitation sports in Germany has been affected on promotion of physical, psychological, and social function and is being considered an importance field of sports and rehabilitation therapy for the disabled. Now, in our country, research is being carried out to introduce rehabilitation sports for the people with disabilities.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aqua-exercise program on fitness and blood factors in the elderly women. Subjects were fifteen members living in Daejon(15 females), between 65 and 77 years of age. The subjects was put in the aqua-exercise program for 8 weeks, between July and september, 2001. The results of this study were as follows : 1. After the exercise program, there are significant differences of Fat Mass(p<0.05), Fat Distribution(p<0.01), Obesity(p<0.01), Soft Lean Mass(p<0.05). 2. The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of the fear-avoidance beliefs questionnaire (FABQ) in assessing Korean patients with low back pain. We performed translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the questionnaire and enrolled 52 patients (18 males and 34 females) with low back pain. The subjects completed a standardized self-administered questionnaire that included the FABQ assessment along with evaluations for the visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry disability index (ODI), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), and Beck depression inventory-Korean version (K-BDI). The reliability of the obtained data was determined by evaluating the internal consistency on the basis of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the Cronbach's alpha values, while the validity of the data was examined by correlating the FABQ scores to the VAS, ODI, SAS, and K-BDI scores. The translated versions of the FABQ showed good test-retest reliability: ICC (3, 1)=.90 (FABQ for physical activity) and .97 (FABQ for work) these values were statistically significant (p<.01). The Cronbach's alpha value for FABQ was .90 (p<.01). FABQ moderately correlated with pain, disability, anxiety, and depression (p<.01). The results of this study indicate that the Korean version of the FABQ is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring fear-avoidance beliefs in Korean patients with low back pain.
Purpose: The main causes of chronic neck pain (CNP) are wrong postures and degenerative changes. This study investigated the effects of specific exercise on elderly women with CNP. Methods: 29 elderly women who complain of CNP were classified into experimental group (14) and control group (15). The experimental group was treated with specific exercise and minimal conventional therapy, whereas the control group was treated only with conventional therapy. Then the effects on the visual analogue scale (VAS), neck disability index (NDI), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), Korean form of geriatric depression scale (KGDS), and range of motion (ROM) were compared between the two groups. Results: The experimental group showed significantly improved results in VAS, NDI, SAS, KGDS, and ROM after intervention (p<0.05), as did the control group (p<0.05). The comparison of changes in the experimental group before and after intervention showed superior results in the SAS, NDI, and ROM (flexion, rotation, lat. flexion) results when compared with the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Specific exercise is effective in the improvement of SAS, NDI, and ROM for elderly women with CNP.
Background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) diagnosis using Kellgren-Lawrence scores is commonly used to help decision-making during assessment of the severity of OA with assessment of pain, function and muscle strength. The association between Kellgren-Lawrence scores and functional/clinical outcomes remains controversial in patients with knee OA. Objects: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between Kellgren-Lawrence scores and knee pain associated with OA, function during daily living and sports activities, quality of life, and knee muscle strength in patients with knee OA. Methods: We recruited 66 patients with tibiofemoral knee OA and determined knee joint Kellgren-Lawrence scores using standing anteroposterior radiographs. Self-reported knee pain, daily living function, sports/recreation function, and quality of life were measured using the knee injury and OA outcome score (KOOS). Knee extensors and flexors were assessed using a handheld dynamometer. We performed Spearman's rank correlation analyses to evaluate the relationships between Kellgren-Lawrence and KOOS scores or muscle strength. Results: Kellgren-Lawrence scores were significantly negatively correlated with KOOS scores for knee pain, daily living function, sports/recreation function, and quality of life. Statistically significant negative correlations were found between Kellgren-Lawrence scores and knee extensor strength but not flexor strength. Conclusion: Higher Kellgren-Lawrence scores were associated with more severe knee pain and lower levels of function in daily living and sports/recreation, quality of life, and knee extensor strength in patients with knee OA. Therefore, we conclude that knee OA assessment via self-reported KOOS and knee extensor strength may be a cost-effective alternative to radiological exams.
