  • Control of drag force on a circular cylinder using a detached splitter plate is numerically studied for laminar flow. A splitter plate with the same length as the cylinder diameter(d) is placed horizontally in the wake region. Its position is described by the gap ratio(G/d), where G represents the gap between the cylinder base point and the leading edge of the plate. The drag varies with the gap ratio; it has the minimum value at a certain gap ratio for each Reynolds number. The drag sharply increases past the optimum gap ratio; this seems to be related to the sudden change in the bubble size in the wake region. This trend is consistent with the experimental observation currently available in case of turbulent flow. It is also found that the net drag coefficient significantly depends on the variation of base suction coefficient.

  • This experimental study is conducted to investigate effects of a splitter plate, which is set on the back side of a square prism in the uniform flow. The Reynolds number is $1.44{\times}10^{4}$ based on the width of the square prism. The measurement of velocity vector and pressure distribution are carried out 4 cases of length in the range of 0.5L to 2.0L with 0.5L interval and 3 cases of Position at 0L, 0.25L, 0.5L, Flow visualization is also executed by smoke-wire method to understand the mechanism of vortex formation The results show the strong vortex shedding patterns and drags are decreased effectively, when the position of splitter plate is 0L. And the drag reduction rate is in inverse proportion to the splitter plate length

  • Incompressible, unsteady flow around various single rectangular cylinders of side ratios ranging from 0.005 to 2.0 immersed in uniform flow is computed by the vortex tracing me thod. Results with and without a splitter plate pttached to the rear center of the cylinder are compared. The objective of this study is to investigate predictability of the effects of the splitter plate on drag by the method. Without the splitter plate, computed drag coefficients for cylinders of large side ratios are in good agreement with measured values, but are over predicted for those of small side ratios. With the splitter plate, drag coefficient is reduced significantly due to suppression of vortex growing near the base and interaction between the separated shear layers.

  • Laminar vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder with and without splitter plates attached to the circular cylinder at low Reynolds numbers are simulated by solving the unsteady incompressible Navier-Strokes equations. The Strouhal number, lift and drag rapidly change with the splitter plate. Far-field noise from the vortex shedding behind the cylinder is computed using the Lighthill acoustic analogy and the Curle's solution for the Lighthill equation. The acoustic source functions are obtained from the computed near-field velocity and pressure. Numerical results show that the volume quadrupole noise is small at low Mach numbers, compared with the surface dipole noise. Also the amplitude and frequency of the acoustic density fluctuations are varied with the length of splitter plates. The scattering effects at the edge of a splitter plate are considered by using the half-plane Green's function.

  • In this paper, optical noise is reduced by a differential detector, which is composed of a beam splitter and two photodiodes whose spectral responses are different each other. In this configuration, the automatic gain control circuit is not required for noise cancellation because the noise intensities at the two photodiodes are kept equal by a beam splitter. The signal to noise ratio in a differential detector with a beam splitter was improved to be 14 ㏈ higher than in a single photodiode with optical filtering.

  • Centrifugal fans are widely used in industrial practices but the noise generated by these machines causes one of the most serious problems. In general, the centrifugal fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and its higher harmonics. This is a consequence of the strong interaction between the flow discharged from the impeller and the cutoff in the easing. However, only a few researches have been carried out on predicting the noise because of the difficulty in obtaining detailed information about the flow field and casing effects on noise radiation. The objective of this study is to develop a prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a centrifugal fan, and to calculate the effects of small vanes that are attached in original impeller - Splitter impeller. We assume that the impeller rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field around the impeller is incompressible and inviscid. So, a discrete vortex method (DVM) is used to model the centrifugal fan and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic source. The splitter impeller changes the acoustic characteristics as well as performance. Two-splitter type impeller and splitter impeller which splitter locates in jet region are good for acoustic characteristics.

  • Acoustic performance of splitter silencers was investigated by using 3-dimensional commercial software and experiments. Flow resistivity of sound absorbing material was indirectly estimated by using an impedance tube setup and a curve fitting method. In addition the acoustic impedance of perforated plate was determined by an empirical formulation. Such properties have been used as input parameters in the commercial software. The prediction for a splitter silencer with 1000 mm length was compared with the experimental result. The numerical method is then applied to identify the effects of number of splitters, length of splitters, absorptive material density, and porosity of a perforated plate on the performance of the splitter silencers. As the number and length of splitter increases, the acoustic performance significantly increases. Although the increase of density of absorptive material also increase the acoustic performance, a change in the density over a certain level hardly affect it. The increase of porosity will enhance the performance especially at higher frequencies.

  • A systematic synthesis process is presented for the design of ADSL POTS splitters. It consists of a low-pass filter formed by a single-ended inductor, balanced inductor, and balance tightly coupled transformer. This three low-pass filters has been simulation. Simulation results show agreement of frequency characteristics. Therefore, POTS splitters using a commercial balance tightly coupled transformer are designed for the applications of ADSL system. The experimental results show that POTS splitter in the ADSL system has ripple decibel of less than $\pm$0.5 dB over a frequency range from 0.2 kHz to 3.4 kHz(or an audio band frequency) and delay distortion of less than 130 $mutextrm{s}$ over a frequency range from 0.6 kHz to 3.2 kHz.

  • In X-ray stress measurements for uni-directionally deformed surfaces such as grinding, a strongly curved $sin^2{\Psi} diagram, so called $\Psi-splitter, has been observed recently. It has been known that this is caused by the residual shear stress induced in the deformed layer by external forces. In this case it is necessary to consider this enough for ceramics and composite materials with tri-axial stress analysis. However, sufficient studies have not been done about the tri-axial stress analysis of the macro stress and micro. stress on each phase of the composite materials. The result of obtaining is as follows. 1. $\Psi-splitter does not appear in the vertical direction though $\Psi-splitter appears in grinding direction in WC-Co cemented carbides. The reversal of $\Psi-splitter to each phase does not appear. 2. $\Psi-splitter caused in WC-Co cemented carbides has a close relation in dislocation which accumulates in WC phase and phase transformation caused in Co phase. 3. The residual stress on the surface of grinding of each phase is in the state of the compression stress.
