  • The object of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of existing RC bridge piers that were constructed before the adoption of the seismic design provision of Korea Bridge Design Specification in 1992. In this research, adopted test parameters were limited ductile design or non-seismic design, aspect ratio, confinement steel type, loading pattern, lap-spliced ratio for longitudinal reinforcement. This study has been performed to verify the effect of test parameter by quasi-static test. Quasi-static test has been done to investigate the physical seismic performance of RC bridge piers, such as lateral force-displacement hysteretic curve, envelope curve etc. It has been observed that seismic performance of lap-spliced test specimen, non-seismically designed specimens, was significantly reduced.

  • It is well known that RC piers having 50% of lap-spliced longitudinal bars in plastic hinge region have a good ductility relatively. But the deformability under various loading condition is not confirmed. In this study scale models with different confinement were tested under different axial loads and loading cycles. It was confirmed that deformability was decreased with increase of axial force and number of loading cycles and that the models having 75% of confinement specified in present code satisfy the required seismic performance.

  • The bridge columns with lap-splice reinforcements in earthquake suffered a brittle bond-slip failure due to deterioration of the lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcements without developing its flexural capacity or ductility. In this case, such a brittle failure can be controlled by the seismic retrofit using FRP wrapping. The retrofitted columns using FRP wrapping showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect. This paper presents the circumferential confinement effect of existing circular bridge pier strengthened with FRP wrapping for poor lap-splice details. The effects on the confinement of FRP wrapping, such as gap lengths between footing and FRP, fiber orientations, and thicknesses of FRP, were investigated by quasi-static experiments.

  • Lap splice of longitudinal reinforcing steels was located in the plastic hinge region of most bridge piers that had been designed and constructed before the adoption of the 1992 seismic design provision of Korea Highway Design Specification. This research aims at improving the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal steels, of which the plastic hinge region was wrapped by the shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. Quasi-static test was used to investigate the seismic behaviours of RC test specimens.

  • This paper presents an efficient approach to the determination of the buckling loads of down-aisle, spliced, unbraced, pallet rack structures subjected to vertical and horizontal loads. A pallet rack structures is analysed by considering the stability equations of an equivalent free-sway column. The effects of semi-rigid beam-to-upright, splice-to-upright and base-plate-to-upright connections are fully incorporated into the analysis. Each section of upright between successive beam levels in the pallet rack is considered to be a single column element with two rotational degrees of freedom. A computer algebra package was used to determine modified stability equations for column elements containing splices. The influence of the position of splices in a pallet rack is clearly demonstrated.

  • Inaccurate predictions of effective stiffness for reinforced concrete (RC) columns having plain (undeformed) longitudinal rebars may lead to unsafe performance assessment and strengthening of existing deficient frames. Currently utilized effective stiffness models cover RC columns reinforced with deformed longitudinal rebars. A database of 47 RC columns (33 columns had continuous rebars and the remaining had spliced reinforcement) that were longitudinally reinforced with plain rebars was compiled from literature. The existing effective stiffness equations were found to overestimate the effective stiffness of columns with plain rebars for all levels of axial loads. A new approach that considers the contributions of flexure, shear and bond slip to column deflections prior to yielding was proposed. The new effective stiffness formulations were simplified without loss of generality for columns with and without lap-spliced plain rebars. In addition, the existing stiffness models for the columns with deformed rebars were improved while taking poor bond characteristics of plain rebars into account.

  • This paper focuses on a development of strut-and-tie model (STM) to predict the capacity of an improved longitudinal joint for decked bulb-tee bridge systems. Nine reinforced concrete beam/slab specimens anchored by spliced headed bars with different details were tested. Test results were evaluated and compared with an anticipation of the validated STM. The proposed STM provides a lower bound of the ultimate capacity of the joint zone. It shows that the lap length of headed bars has a significant effect on structural behaviors of the improved joint. To develop a full strength joint, the range of the lap length can be determined by the strength and compatibility requirement. Design recommendations to spliced headed bars, concrete strength, as well as lacer bars in the joint zone are proposed for developing a full strength joint.

  • Prestressed concrete I-girders were used in the bridge applications in the early 1950s. During the last four decades, the most widely used girder length of bridges have been below 30meters. The main objective of this study is to develope the alternative section for long span bridge which exceed 40 meters. The developed Bulb-Tee girder has a wide bottom flange to enhance the compressive strength and to allow placement of a large number of strands in the bottom flange. New bulb-tee shaped PSC girder sections are proposed in this paper. Splicing the technique for long span bridge girder to reduce the self weight is also proposed.

  • In this study, an experimental work is conducted to evaluate the bond performance between reinforcing bars and surrounding concrete in a lapped splice. The major variable of this test is a transverse reinforcement in lap-spliced tension reinforcing bars. The test results indicate that the bond strength per unit splice length increases with an increase in the transverse reinforcement factor $K_{\alpha}$. The specimens taken less than (c+$K_{tr}$)/$d_b$=3.0 tend to be very brittle at failure. But the specimens taken longer than (c+$K_{tr}$)/$d_b$=3.0 tend to be somewhat ductile at failure.
