  • The aim of the current work is to describe the flexural behaviour of simply supported concrete beams with tension reinforcement spliced at mid-span. The parameters included in the study were the type of the concrete, the splice length and the configuration of the hooked splice. Fifteen beams were cast using an ordinary concrete mix and two fiber reinforced concrete mixes incorporating steel and polypropylene fibers. Each concrete mix was used to cast five beams with continuous, spliced and hooked spliced tension steel bars. A test beam was reinforced on the tension side with two 12 mm bars and the splice length was 20 and 40 times the bar diameter. The hooked bars were spliced along 20 times the bar diameter and provided with 45-degree and 90-degree hooks. The test results in terms of cracking and ultimate loads, cracking patterns, ductility, and failure modes are reported. The results demonstrated the consequences due to short splices and the improvement in the structural behaviour due to the use of hooks and the confinement provided by the steel and polypropylene fibers.

  • The effects of deformation properties on the bond of steel reinforcing bars to concrete are experimentally studies to expect the lap splice strength. Based on the previous research about relative rib area, lap splice strength between reinforcing bars and concrete can be improved by the control of rib height and spacing. This paper describes the testing and analysis of 15 beam-spliced specimens containing D25, D22, D19 with relative rib areas ranging from 0.066 to 0.162. The tests are analyzed to determine the effect of relative rib area(Rr) on the increase in bond strength. The tests also provide a preliminary indication of the effect of high relative rib area on the splice strength of uncoated bars.

  • Experimental results on splice strength of concrete and hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composite are reported. Two series of tests, with six specimens each, were carried out. The research parameters were: bar diameter(D16, D22), lap splice length(50, 75, 100$\%$). The current experimental results demonstrated clearly that the use of hybrid fibers in cementitious matrixes increases significantly the splice strength of reinforcing bars in tension. Also, the presence of fibers increased the number of cracks formed around the spliced bars, delayed the growth of the splitting cracks, and consequently, improved the ductility of bond failure.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the damage of the reinforced concrete bridge piers. For the purpose of this research, twelve reinforced concrete specimens were fabricated and experimented with quasi-static test method. The selected test parameters are lap splice, axial load ratio, confinement steel ratio and number of loading cycle. The method of evaluate of damage index is the model proposed by Park and Ang. In accordance with this research, the most effective test parameter is lap splice of longitudinal steel. Therefore, the retrofit scheme of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splice of longitudinal steel, which was constructed before 1992, must be settled without delay. Otherwise, the effect of axial force is trivial. The more confinement steel is less damage index and more loading cycle lead to raise damage. The damage statement proposed Park and Ang is the same with experimental results.

  • In the case of designing superconducting power apparatuses using the second generation high temperature superconducting wire, it is necessary to have a tape-splicing technique to achieve low splice resistance between coated conductor (CC) tapes. In this paper, an experimental splice method between YBCO CC tapes is proposed for a coil application. Splices were performed with a 37Pb-63Sn solder. YBCO samples were fabricated with various pressures and cooling rates. Joint resistances of the spliced samples of jointed YBCO CC tapes were measured and evaluated from V-I curves. In addition, optical micrographs were obtained to analyze the cross sectional microstructure of jointed samples.

  • This paper presents the cyclic seismic performance of slip-critically designed, high-strength bolted-beam splice in steel moment frames. Before the moment connection reaching its ultimate plastic strength, unexpected premature slippage occurred at the slip-critically designed beam splice during the test. The experimentally observed frictional coefficients were as low as about 50% to 60% of nominal(code) value. Nevertheless, the bearing type behavior mobilized after the slippage transferred the increasing cyclic loads successfully, i.e., the consequence of slippage into bearing was not catastrophic to the connection behavior. The test result seems to indicate that the traditional beam splice design basing upon(bolt-hole deducted) effective flange area criterion may not be sufficient in developing the plastic strength of moment connections under severe earthquake loading. New procedure for achieving slip-critical beam splice design is proposed based on capacity design concept.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the seismic performance of weak-axis column-tree type connections used in steel moment frames. These connections are composed of a shop-welded and fieldbolted steel structure and can improve welding quality. On this basis, column-tree type connections are widely used in steel moment resisting frames in Korea and Japan. In this study, splices designed with a semirigid concept regarding the seismic performance of column-tree connections were experimentally evaluated. The structures can absorb energy in an inelastic state rather than the elastic state of the structures by the capacity design method. For this reason, the plastic hinge might be located at the splice connection at the weak-axis column-tree connection by reducing the splice plate thickness. The main variable was the distance from the edge of the column flange to the beam splice. CTY series specimens having column-tree connections with splice length of 600 mm and 900 mm were designed, respectively. For comparison with two specimens with the main variable, a base specimen with a weak-axis column-tree connection was fabricated and tested. The test results of three full-scale test specimens showed that the CTY series specimens successfully developed ductile behavior without brittle fracture until 5% story drift ratio. Although the base specimen reached a 5% story drift ratio, brittle fracture was detected at the backing bar near the beam-to-column connection. Comparing the energy dissipation capacity for each specimen, the CTY series specimens dissipated more energy than the base specimen.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the more reasonable equation of bond strength of grout-filled splice sleeve. To accomplish this objective, total 60 full-sized specimens were tested under monotonic loading. The experimental variables are compressive strength of mortar, embedment length and size of reinforcing bars. Following conclusions are obtained; 1) If the adequacy of existing equations which estimate the bond strength of grout-filled splice sleeve are investigated, they underestimate the bond strength of grout-filled splice sleeve by 8-18%. Also the existing equations have a tendency to underestimate with decrease in the embedment length of reinforcing bars. 2) From the test result of bond failure, the equation which estimates the confining pressure of grout-filled splice sleeve was proposed by making multiple regression analyses of which independent variables are embedment length of reinforcing bars and compressive strength of mortar. This equation predicted the measured bond capacity of this test more accurately than existing equations and eliminated the deviation according to the embedment length of reinforcing bars.

  • Unlike field-welded moment frames damaged during the Northridge earthquake, a column-tree moment frame has a tool to control and reduce its seismic behavior. The tool is the girder splice. Girder splices could be designed to be sufficiently ductile and to have a prescribed bending moment capacity. In such a design, during earthquakes, the girder splices would act as ductile "fuses" and limit the magnitude of forces including the bending moment that could be developed in the frame. In Korea, most moment frames arc composed of a column-tree moment frame. Therefore, the elasto-plastic behavior of steel beams with high strength bolted friction splice should be clarified. Furthermore, structural capacities, including energy absorption capacity, must be quantitatively found. This paper discusses an experimental study to clarify elasto-plastic behavior of steel beams with high strength bolted friction splices. A total of 5 specimens were tested. A specimen was fabricated to have a beam splice designed by a full strength method. Other specimens were fabricated to have beam splices with 75%, 50% and 0% capacities compared with the specimen.
