  • The spray/wall interaction is considered as an important phenomenon influencing air-fuel mixing in the internal combustion engines. In order to adequately represent the spray/wall interaction process, impingement regimes and post-impingement behavior have been modeled using experimental data and conservation constraints. The modeled regimes were stick, rebound, spread and splash. The tangential velocities of splashing droplets were obtained using a theoretical relationship. The continuous phase was modeled using the Eulerian conservation equations, and the dispersed phase was calculated using a discrete droplet model. The numerical simulations were compared to experimental results for spray impingement normal to the wall. The predictions for the secondary droplet velocities and droplet sizes were in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • In this paper an experimental study is presented to investigate the dynamic behavior of impacting droplet onto a liquid film. The main parameters are the droplet velocity and the thickness of the liquid film. Photographic images are presented to show the formation of crown, central jet and disintegrating droplet from the central jet. The emphasis is on presenting the time evolution of crown diameter, crown height, central jet height and the size of disintegrating droplet from the central jet. The diameter and height of crown are higher for faster droplet and thinner liquid film. On the other hand, the height of central jet are higher for faster droplet and thicker liquid film. The size of disintegrating droplet from the central jet heavily depends on the droplet velocity; Larger droplet is produced with faster falling droplets.

  • An inviscid axisymmetric model capable of predicting droplet bouncing and the detailed pre-impact motion, influenced by the ambient pressure, has been developed using boundary element method (BEM). Because most droplet impact simulations of previous studies assumed that a droplet was already in contact with the impacting substrate at the simulation start, the previous simulations could not accurately describe the effect of the gas compressed between a failing droplet and the impacting substrate. To properly account for the surrounding gas effect, an effect is made to release a droplet from a certain height. High gas pressures are computationally observed in the region between the droplet and the impact surface at instances just prior to impact. The current simulation shows that the droplet retains its spherical shape when the surface tension energy is dominant over the dissipative energy. When increasing the Weber number, the droplet surface structure is highly deformed due to the appearance of the capillary waves and, consequently, a pyramidal surface structure is formed; this phenomenon was verified with our experiment. Parametric studies using our model include the pre-impact behavior which varies as a function of the Weber number and the surrounding gas pressure.

  • Recently, researches for droplet impact phenomena have been faced a new phase in the direction of studying the effect of complex external conditions (e.g. wettability, temperature, morphology, electric field, etc.) for depth understanding and precise controlling in various applications. Hence, here we investigated the electrified droplet impact phenomena, because there were few quantitative researches for electrified droplet impact when we considering many real applications such as electrospray, electrohydrodynamic (EHD) jet printing. To observe interaction effect of surface charge between substrate and droplet simultaneously, micro-droplets with various Reynolds number (Re) and Weber number (We) were dripped on super-hydrophobic surface with existence and nonexistence of electrical surface charge. It shows three kinds of impact behaviors, fully bouncing, partial bouncing, and splashing with different We. Also, charged droplet bounced higher on electrically charged surface than on non-charged surface. Additionally, transition regions of three impact behaviors were classified quantitatively with water hammer pressure value, which means instant pressure inside droplet at the impact moment.

  • Purpose: The increase in patients requiring hemodialysis has resulted in an increase dialysis-associated infections risk. but there are no Renal Dialysis unit design standard meet specified safety and quality standards. Therefore, appropriate Establish standards and legal regulation is important for the provision of initial certification and maintenance of facility, equipment, and human resource quality. Methods: Literature survey on the design guideline and standards of Renal Dialysis unit design in Korea, U.S, Germany, Singapore, Hongkong, Dubai. Results: There are no established standards for facilities in dialysis units in Korea. To prevent infections in dialysis patients, necessary establish standards. Considering the domestic and overseas Health-care facilities standards, the major factors to be considered in the medical environment for Renal Dialysis Unit are as follows. First, planning to separate Clean areas(treatment area) from contaminated areas(medical waste storage area). Second, ensure sufficient space and minimum separation distance. Although there may be differences depending on the circumstances of individual institutions, renal dialysis unit consider the space to prevent droplet transmission. Third, secure infrastructure of infection prevention such as sufficient amount of hand hygiene sinks. Hand washing facilities for staff within the Unit should be readily available. Hand hygiene sinks should be located to prevent water from splashing into the treatment area. Fourth, Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system for Renal Dialysis Unit is all about providing a safer environment for patients and staff. Implications: The results of this paper can be the basic data for the design of the Renal Dialysis Units and relevant regulations.

  • Wall interactions of direct injection spray were investigated using laser-sheet imaging, shadowgraphy, wetted footprint and phase Doppler interferometry techniques. A narrow-cone high-pressure swirl injector is used to inject iso-octane fuel onto a plate, which has three different impact angles inside a pressurized chamber. Heated air and plate conditions were compared with unheated cases. Injection interval was also varied in the heated case to compare dry- and wet- wall impingement behaviors. High-speed macroscopic Mie-scattering images showed that presence of wall and air temperature has only minor effect on the bulk spray structure and penetration speed for the narrow-cone injector tested. The overall bulk motions of the spray plume and its spatial position at a given time are basically unaffected until a few millimeters before impacting the wall. The surface properties of the impact surface, such as the temperature, the presence of a preexisting liquid film also have a small effect on the amount of wetting or the wetted footprint; however, they have strong influence on what occurs just after impact or after a film is formed. The shadowgraph in particular shows that the plate temperature has a significant effect on vapor phase propagation. Generally, 10-20% faster horizontal vapor phase propagation is observed along the wall at elevated temperature condition. For impingement onto a preexisting film, more splash and evaporation were also observed. Contrary to some preconceptions, there is no significant splashing and droplet rebounding from surfaces that are interposed in the path of the DI gasoline spray, especially for the oblique impact angle cases. There also appears to be a dense spray front consists of large sac spray droplets in the oblique impact angle cases. The bulk of the spray is not impacted on the surface, but rather is deflected by it The microscopic details as depicted by phase Doppler measurements show that the outcome of the droplet impaction events can be significantly influenced. Only droplets at the spray front have high enough Weber numbers for wall impact to wet, splash or rebound. Using the sign of vertical velocity, the time-resolved downward droplets and upward droplets are compared. The Weber number of upward moving droplets, which seldom exceeds unity, also decreases as the impact angle decreases, as the droplets tend to impact less and move along the wall in the deflected spray plume.
