The large surface micro machining system includes the equipments and processes for manufacturing the ultra precision micro patterned products with large surface through the mechanical machining. Recent major issue on the micro machining technology may be the development of optical parts for the back light unit of display which has the largest market. This special issue makes up with three parts; the large surface micro machining system and machine, machining process and forming process. In this paper, the state-of-the-art and core technology of large surface micro machining system is introduced with focus on the manufacturing technology for the back light unit of LCD TV. Then, some research results on the development of a roll die lathe is introduced which involves the concept of machine design, improvement of thermal characteristics in the spindle system, improvement of relative parallelism and straightness between spindle system and long stroke feed table, machining of micro pitch patterns. Finally, the direct forming process is introduced as the future work in the large surface micro machining field.
The rotation of a spindle unit must be accurate for high-quality machining and to improve the quality of the machine tools. Therefore, the proper measurement of the rotation accuracy and ensuring a proper analysis are very important. Separate processes are necessary because spindle errors and roundness errors associated with the test balls can both factor into the measured rotation error values. We used three methods to discern test ball errors and analyzed which could be deemed as the most proper technique in a test of the rotation accuracy of the main spindle of a machine tool.

For the purpose to improve and to automate designing of high-speed spindle units (SU's), we have developed the mathematical models and software to estimate SU performance characteristics, including the run-out of spindles running on ball bearings. In order to understand better the mechanics of high-speed SUs, the dynamic interaction of ball bearings and SU, and the influence of the bearing imperfections and SU's operational conditions on the run-out, we have carried out computer simulation and experimental studies. Through the study of SU's, we have found out that run-out of SU can vary drastically with variation of rpm. The influences of rotation speed and of accuracy parameters of bearings on the SU accuracy have the greatest importance. The influence of bearing preload has a secondary importance. Comparison of the results of these studies has demonstrated adequacy of the models and software developed to the real SU's.
Thermally induced errors have been significant factors affecting the machine tool accuracy. In this paper, the spindle thermal error has been focused, where the 5 degree of freedom thermal error components are considered. An effective measurement system has been devised for the 5 DOF thermal errors, consisting of gap sensors and thermocouples around the micro-computer interfaced environment. Several thermal error modeling techniques are also implemented for the thermal error prediction: multiple linear regression, neural network and system identification methods, etc. The performance of the thermal error modeling techniques is evaluated and compared, giving the system identification method as the optimum model having the least deviation. The developed system for the thermal error measurement and modeling was practically applied to a CNC machining center, and the spindle thermal errors were effectively compensated around the micro computer-machine tool interfaced networks. The machine tool accuracy was improved about 4-5 times typically.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae strain CL-s attached to broth-covered surfaces was examined sequentially during growth from single cells for morphologic and ultrastructural changes using several different electron microscopic techniques. Changes in morphology revealed both round and spindle shapes and observation of cell transitions suggested some type of morphological cycle. The round to-ovoid cells observed in the early stages of growth appeared to be viable, and morphologically and ultrastructurally different from the spherical fors which were produced during the latter stage of growth. The spindle segments were detected appeared to be structurally the same as the terminal cored structure seen in thin sections and may be a growing point or an attachment site of the cell. A tubular structure was observed in the core of the terminal structure and a microtubule-like element appeared to bridge between some spindle segments. A matrix sunstance was observed around single cells as well in the intercellular space of the colonies prepared by critical point metrical triple-layered cytoplasmic mermbranes, surfaces, of which appeared to be structurally different each other, were observed in young cells, whereas symmetrical and thicker membranes were seen in older cells. Small bodies were found in 4d or older cultures and did not appear to contain any internal structures or an easily detectable unit membrane.
Thermal error compensation has been developed for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining center with moving heat sources. The thermal error in CNC machining center has an effect on machining accuracy more than the geometric error does. Thus, temperature distributions of a spindle unit have been analyzed numerically by a Finite Differential Method and experimentally by an infrared (IR) camera in this study. A multiple variable method has been derived to estimate the thermal deformation of the machine origin stably and effectively after measuring deformation and temperature data. The experimental results for a vertical machining center have shown that the thermal errors of the machine origins were reduced more than 30% by the developed method.

This paper describes a contact atomic force microscope (AFM) that can be used for high-speed precision measurements of microstructured surfaces. The AFM is composed of an air-bearing X stage, an air-bearing spindle with the axis of rotation in the Z direction, and an AFM probe unit. The traversing distance and maximum speed of the X stage are 300 mm and 400 mm/s, respectively. The spindle has the ability to hold a sample in a vacuum chuck with a maximum diameter of 130 mm and has a maximum rotation speed of 300 rpm. The bandwidth of the AFM probe unit in an open loop control circuit is more than 40 kHz. To achieve precision measurements of microstructured surfaces with slopes, a scanning strategy combining constant height measurements with a slope compensation technique is proposed. In this scanning strategy, the Z direction PZT actuator of the AFM probe unit is employed to compensate for the slope of the sample surface while the microstructures are scanned by the AFM probe at a constant height. The precision of such a scanning strategy is demonstrated by obtaining profile measurements of a microstructure surface at a series of scanning speeds ranging from 0.1 to 20.0 mm/s.
In metal cutting, the machining accuracy is more affected by thermal errors than by geometric errors. This paper models of the thermal errors for error analysis and develops on-the-machine measurement system by which the volumetric error are measured and compensated. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses, a designed spherical ball artifact, and five gap sensors. In order to analyze the thermal characteristics under several operating conditions, experiments performed with the touch probe unit and five gap sensors on the vertical and horizontal machining centers.

One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools.
