  • The induction motor drive for the spindle of machining center is required to do not only a constant torque operation in low speed region(below base rpm), but also a constant power operation in high speed region(beyond base rpm). Also, control voltage shortage due to high speed operation must be overcome. The vector controlled inverter system with input 3 phase pwm converter is designed for that kind of condition. We experimented the performance of the inverter system with spindle motor made by Hyosung industries co.

  • This paper is presented for the development of the brushless DC(BLDC) spindle motors for hard disk drives. A new BLDC Motor has the use of insulated, compacted, iron powder for the armature core material of BLDC motors. Insulated iron powder in this paper is generally called soft magnet composite(SMC). The SMC is used for the stator of the motor instead of the laminated steel core. The motor used by SMC can have the good advantages in condition of the high frequency input power and small sized motor. It gets much more high efficiency than laminated steel core at same input power. The proposed motor has a technique of speed sensorless control. Experimental results show the performance of the proposed BLDC spindle motors for an HDD.

  • In this paper, the authors propose a new high performance Built-in Type spindle motor drive using vector-controlled technique at 15,000 r/min. Control method is changed by variation of motor speed in a conventional Built-in type spindle drive. In the drive system to be presented, the conventional vector control is used in the low-speed range, and the vector control without encoder is used in the high-speed range. Furthermore, in order to drive the motor from 0 to 15,000 rpm smoothly, the vector control with encoder in the low-speed range (from 0 to 8,000 rpm) is utilized and the vector control without encoder in the high-speed range (from 8,000 to 15,000 rpm) is utilized.   • Monitoring of the cutting force signals in cutting process has been well emphasized in machine tool communities. Although the cutting force can be directly measured by a tool dynamometer, this method is not always feasible because of high cost and limitations in setup. In this paper an indirect cutting force monitoring system is developed so that the cutting force in turning process is estimated based on a AC spindle drive model. This monitoring system considers the cutting force as a disturbance input to the spindle drive and estimates the cutting force based on the inverse dynamic model. The inverse dynamic model represents the dynamic relation between the cutting force, the motor torque and the motor power. The proposed monitoring system is realized on a CNC lathe and its estimation performance is evaluated experimentally.

  • This paper presents a strategy to drive built in-type spindle induction motor which is used as CNC (Computer Numerical Control) in the industrial world. The direct vector control which is robust to the changed machine parameters in the high speed range is used in this motor control method. And electrical model of induction motor presents the basic idea based on observer structure, which is composed of voltage model and current model. But the former has the defects in low speed range, the latter has the defects of sensitivity to motor parameter. Thus Gopinath model flux estimator which is the closed loop flux observer based on two models for the rotor flut estimation is used in this paper. Moreover this paper presents to drive the spindle motor in the high speed range by using the flux weakening control.

Power Loss and Thermal Characteristic Analysis of Induction Motors for Machine Tool Spindle according to the Rated Power-Speed (공작기계 스핀들용 유도전동기의 용량-속도에 따른 손실 및 발열특성 해석)

  • This paper deals with the power loss and thermal characteristics of induction motor for machine tools according to the rated power and speed. To reduce the fabrication error by thermal strain in rotational machine tools, we calculated the power loss and thermal behavior of induction motors. Firstly, the inverse design of general induction motors for machine tool spindle has been performed. The inverse design results are compared with the torque-speed characteristic curve in motor's catalog. The power loss are calculated by finite element method(FEM) at rated condition. Secondary, the transient thermal characteristics of induction motors are calculated by equivalent thermal resistance model from Motor-CAD S/W. The inverse design, power loss and thermal behavior calculation for induction motors with various rated power and speed has been performed. Finally, to verify the design and calculation process of induction motor, we implemented the experimental set with 0.4kW 1710rpm class industrial induction motor model. The obtained thermal characteristics of experimental model confirmed that the design and power loss calculation processes are appropriate to the prediction of thermal strain in rotational machine tools.

Study on Spindle Motor's Power-Factor and Frictional Characteristics For Cutting Force Monitoring in a CNC Machine (CNC 공작기계의 절삭력 감지를 위한 주축모터의 역률 및 마찰특성에 관한 연구)

  • Real-time monitoring and control of the cutting force is essential for unmanned cutting process. Although the cutting force can be measured directly using tool dynamometers, their implementation is not feasible in industry due to high cost. Alternative approach is the cutting force estimation based on spindle drive models, but it requires the knowledge of their characteristics with the spindle speed variation. This paper investigates the power-factor and frictional characteristics of three-phase induction motors and determines its characteristics below and above the base speed, respectively. In order to realize the proposed cutting force monitoring system, a stand-alone DSP board was utilized. Its monitoring and control performance is evaluated in a CNC lathe.

  • This paper deals with thermal characteristic analysis of induction motors for machine tool spindle for motion error prediction. Firstly, the inverse design of general induction motors for machine tool spindle has been performed by design principles. Characteristics considering VVVF inverter of induction motors were analyzed. Secondary, power loss and thermal characteristics of induction motors analyzed by equivalent thermal resistance model from Motor-CAD S/W. To develop a second-order fitted power-loss distribution model for the constant-torque operating range of the induction motor, we employed the design of experiment and response surface methodology techniques. Finally, the analysis results were experimentally verified, and the validity of the proposed analysis method was confirmed.

Low Power Consumption Technology for Streaming Data Playback in the IPTV Set-top Box (IPTV 셋톱박스 환경에서 스트리밍 데이터 재생을 위한 전력 소모 감소 기법)

  • The hard disk is one of the most frequently used storage in IPTV sep-top box. It has large storage capacity and provides fast I/O speed compared to its price whereas it causes high power consumption due to mechanical characteristics of spindle motor. In order to play streaming data in the set-top box, spindle motor of hard disk keeps active mode and it causes high power consumption. In this paper, We propose an offset-buffering and multi-mode spin-down method to reduce power consumption for streaming data playback. The offset-buffering inspects the user's viewing pattern and performs buffering based on the analysis of viewing pattern. So, it can maintain the status of spindle motor as idle mode for long time. Besides, it can reduce power consumption by spinning down according to offset-buffer size. The experimental result shows that proposed offset-buffering and multi mode spin-down method is about 28.3% and 12.5% lower than the full-Buffering method in terms of the power consumption and spin-down frequency, respectively.
