  • Background: The voluntary diagnosis-related groups (DRG)-based payment system was introduced in 2002 and the government mandated participation in the DRG for all hospitals from July 2013. The main purpose of this study is to examine the independent effect of mandatory participation in DRG on various outcomes of patients. Methods: This study collected 1,809,948 inpatient DRG data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment database which contains medical information for all patients for the period 2007 to 2014 and examined patient outcomes such as length of stay (LOS), total medical cost, spillover, and readmission rate according to hospital size. Results: LOS of patients decreased after DRGs (large hospitals: adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.87; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.78-0.97; small hospitals: aOR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.91-0.92). The total medical cost of patients increased after DRGs (large hospitals: aOR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.14-1.30; small hospitals: aOR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.21-1.23). The results reveals that spillover of patients increased after DRGs (large hospitals: aOR, 1.27; 95% CI, 0.70-2.33; small hospitals: aOR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.16-1.20). Finally, we found that readmission rates of patients decreased significantly after DRGs (large hospitals: aOR, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.26-0.29; small hospitals: aOR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.56-0.63). Conclusion: The DRG payment system compared to fee-for-service payment in South Korea may be an alternative medical price policy which can reduce the LOS. However, government need to monitor inappropriate changes such as spillover increase. Since this study also is the results based on relatively simple surgery, insurer needs to compare or review bundled payment like new DRG for expansion of various inpatient-related diseases including internal medicine.

  • The aim of this study is to empirically explore the operational spillover effect among companies within chaebol groups, prominent corporate conglomerates in South Korea. Chaebols are known for their horizontal and vertical integration, fostering close collaboration among their constituent companies from a supply chain standpoint. Existing literature highlights the sharing of tangible and intangible resources within chaebol structures, leading to increased efficiency by minimizing transaction costs through resource sharing. This research investigates whether operational management performance within chaebol structures can be transmitted through cooperative resource utilization. To achieve this objective, we categorize leading companies and affiliate companies within chaebols and examine whether the operational management performance of leading companies significantly influences that of affiliate companies. Data on conglomerates, as defined by the Korea Fair Trade Commission, were collected, along with information on companies within these groups. Subsequently, the company with the highest revenue within each group was identified as the leading company, while the remaining companies were designated as affiliate companies. Our analysis reveals a significant positive relationship between the performance of inventory and facility resource management of leading companies and that of affiliate companies. This study sheds light on the transfer of operational management performance within conglomerates from a managerial perspective, underscoring the importance of reinforcing cooperation systems within the chaebol group. Furthermore, this research contributes to the academic discourse by delineating conglomerates from an operational management perspective and empirically demonstrating the transfer effect of operational management performance.

  • Purpose Since the Bitcoin, which was the first virtual currency, was made at 2009, almost 1,000 virtual currencies appeared onstage in the world. Even though virtual currencies have the function of money as a medium of exchange or contract, any of those has not yet entered the commercialization stage. Instead, some of the virtual currencies show the nature of investment assets. In the case of virtual money investment, users tend to use all the information of the world because information transfer is very easy and capital movement is almost free between different countries. In addition, as the transaction sizes of virtual currencies increase, a virtual currency price is no longer independent and is likely to be affected by the prices of other virtual currencies. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the influence among virtual currency markets, which helps successful implementation of investment strategies. Design/methodology/approach This study focuses on the investment product function of virtual money and conducts the analysis using the time series model used in the financial and economic areas. In this paper, we try to analyze the return and volatility transfer effect of virtual money markets through GJR-GARCH model. Findings This study is expected to find out whether we can make market forecasts through reflecting changes in other markets. In addition, we can reduce the trial and error of user decision making by using the information on the yield and volatility transition effect derived from the research results, and it is expected to reduce the opportunity cost of users.

  • This study aims to develop and analyze the performance of a selective option straddle strategy based on forecasted volatility to improve the weakness of typical straddle strategy solely based on negative volatility risk premium. The KOSPI 200 option volatility is forecasted by the SVM model combined with the asymmetric volatility spillover effect. The selective straddle strategy enters option position only when the volatility is forecasted downwardly or sideways. The SVM model is trained for 2008-2014 training period and applied for 2015-2018 testing period. The suggested model showed improved performance, that is, its profit becomes higher and risk becomes lower than the benchmark strategies, and consequently typical performance index, Sharpe Ratio, increases. The suggested model gives option traders guidelines as to when they enter option position.

  • This study investigates daily stock market anomalies in Chinese stock market, using nine most representative stock indices over an eleven year time period spanning from pre-financial crisis era to six years into the financial crisis. This research is the first to test the presence of the day of the week effect on stock returns in the Chinese stock exchanges during the financial crisis. We find that the day of week effects have been strongly significant in Chinese stock exchanges since 2004. However, unlike the previously found negative Monday effect and positive Friday effect in the U.S., Chinese stock market shows positive returns on Mondays and negative returns on Tuesdays. More importantly, the negative Tuesday effect is only significant after the inception of financial crisis. The results indicate a positive effect on Mondays and a negative effect on Thursdays. More importantly, we find a negative Tuesday effect during the financial crisis, which suggests a spillover of the Monday effect from the U.S. stock market. Our results shed some light on the degree of market efficiency in the largest emerging capital market in the world, and its increasingly close relationship with the U.S. capital market.

  • The purpose of this paper is to come up with the measures for sustainable development of the agricultural sector in store for the strengthened U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change. We analyze the spillover effects of Methane and Nitrous Oxides taxes (carbon tax) on the Korean agricultural sector. Unlike the other sectors, the agricultural sector has a unique characteristic generating greenhouse gas in the process of production itself even without consuming much fossil fuel. In order to estimate the impacts of those taxes, non-linear optimization method has been used with various assumed scenarios. The production effect, income and' price effect, and greenhouse gas emission reduction effect in the agricultural sector have been estimated through this method. The empirical results show that the paddy sector has a bigger tax effect than the livestock sector. In the paddy sector, the carbon tax has more impacts in the suburban areas than in the rural areas, while the swine farming section in the livestock sector has a conspicuous income effect in the midst of low greenhouse gas emission effect. These results allude us to apply graded tax rates to the crop, the livestock, and the region of different kind. Even if the agricultural sector has a less tax effect when compared with other industrial sectors, an environmental tax might be an effective measure to prevent global warming.

  • This study investigated the effect of shopping satisfaction on travel satisfaction, travel specific quality of life and overall quality of life for Korean vacation tourists. Tourist evaluations on those four variables were confirmed first. The effect of shopping satisfaction on the other variables was then investigated. The effect of demographics was also identified. An on-line survey method was used to obtain data of 20's-50's tourists, while factor analysis, regression analysis, ANOVA, and Duncan test were applied to analyze data. The results were as follows. First, shopping satisfaction of the vacation travel showed a positive effect on tour satisfaction, which affected the quality of life after travel. Second, travel specific quality of life had a significant effect on overall quality of life and confirmed the bottom-up spillover effect. Third, the perception of shopping satisfaction, travel satisfaction, travel specific quality of life, and overall quality of life differed by demographic factors. Women and young tourists revealed high satisfaction scores in shopping and travel; in addition, wealthy travelers showed a higher quality of life. Occupation tended to partly affect satisfaction and quality of life. The findings implied that travel and tourists' shopping are an important element to enhance the quality of life.

  • In this work, we prepared the Ni-loaded porous SBA-15 (SBA-15) by a depositionprecipitation (D-P) method, in order to enhance the hydrogen storage capacity. The structure and morphology of the Ni/SBA-15 were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM). The results showed that, at the Ni loading used at the DP times in the range of 0-120 min, SBA-15 preserved the well-ordered hexagonal porous arrangement. The textural properties of the Ni/SBA-15 were analyzed using N2 adsorption isotherms at 77 K. Specific surface area and mesopore volume of the samples were determined from the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) equation and Barrett-Joiner-Halenda (BJH) method, respectively. The hydrogen storage capacity of the Ni/SBA-15 was evaluated at 298 K/10 MPa. The hydrogen storage capacity of the Ni/SBA-15 was increased in accordance with Ni content. Consequently, it was found that the presence of Ni on mesoporous SBA-15 created hydrogen-favorable sites which enhanced the hydrogen storage capacity by spillover effect.

  • We study the impact of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) of Asian four countries such as Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and China on housing market returns in Korea. Also, we document the relationship between the EPU index of those four countries and the housing market including macroeconomic indicators in Korea. The EPU index of those four countries has significantly a negative effect on the housing purchase price index, housing lease price index in Korea. The EPU index in Korea and Japan has significantly a negative effect on the CPI. The EPU index in only Japan has significantly a negative effect on the PPI. The EPU index in Hong Kong and Korea has significantly a negative effect but the EPU index in China significantly has a positive effect on the stock price index in construction industry. The EPU index in only Korea has significantly a negative effect the stock price index in banking industry. This study shows the EPU index of the Korea has the negative relationships on the housing market economy rather than other countries by VECM. And this study has an important evidence of the spillover of several macroeconomic indicators in Korea for the EPU index of the Asian four countries.
