  • Spherical and dense BAM phosphor particles were prepared by spray pyrolysis. The key idea of dense BAM particles is to lead gelation in droplets, which was successfully achieved by using the aluminum polycation as the precursor solution for the spray pyrolysis. The BAM phosphor particles prepared by spraying the aluminum polycation solution have completely spherical shape and dense structure. When directly applied to make phosphor film on the glass by the screen-printing method, the prepared spherical BAM phosphor particles showed better packing density and surface morphology than that of commercial one, which has irregular shape and large particle size. It was also found that the thermal degradation in the photoluminescence intensity for dense and spherical BAM particles was less than that of commercial one.

  • Green-emitting $Zn_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphor particles having a spherical shape and high luminescence intensities under VUV were prepared by spray pyrolysis process under severe preparation conditions. The type of precursor solutions affected the morphology and luminescence characteristics of the prepared particles. The particles prepared from the clear solution by laboratory-scale process had spherical shape and dense morphology, while the particles prepared from the severe preparation conditions had rough surface and collapsed structure. However, the particles prepared from the colloidal solution utilizing fumed silica were spherical in shape and filled morphology at the severe preparation conditions of high flow rate of carrier gas, high concentration of solution, and large reactor size. The prepared $Zn_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphor particles with complete spherical shape had higher photoluminescence intensity than that of the commercial product prepared by solid state reaction.

  • The present paper develops piezo-thermo-elastic analysis of a thick spherical shell for generalized functionally graded piezoelectric material. The assumed structure is loaded under thermal, electrical and mechanical loads. The mechanical, thermal and electrical properties are graded along the radial direction based on a power function with three different non homogenous indexes. Primarily, the non homogenous heat transfer equation is solved by applying the general boundary conditions, individually. Substitution of stress, strain, electrical displacement and material properties in equilibrium and Maxwell equations present two non homogenous differential equation of order two. The main objective of the present study is to improve the relations between mechanical and electrical loads in hollow spherical shells especially for functionally graded piezoelectric materials. The obtained results can evaluate the effect of every non homogenous parameter on the mechanical and electrical components.

  • We studied a method of manufacturing an anode to restrict contraction in reducing NiO/YSZ by uniformly mixing. In order to mix Ni and YSZ, a sub-micron Ni core surface was coated at high-speed by a mixture of nano-sized YSZ and a spherical core-shell was subsequently formed. The micron-sized core-shell anode powder was then heat treated at $400{\sim}1,450^{\circ}C$ in an air atmosphere and Ni was extruded and synthesized in nano-size. Subsequently, when the nano-sized mixture of the anode was heat treated and maintained at a temperature of $1,450^{\circ}C$, the anode was manufactured, where Ni and YSZ were uniformly distributed with the nano-structure. According to the nano-sized anode powder synthesis process, Ni particles were oxidized at $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ and became spherical by surface tension. In the case of the spherical core Ni powder, the heat treatment temperature rose to $1,250^{\circ}C$ and then a gap between the internal and external pressures occurred due to thermal and tensile stresses. A crack subsequently appeared on the surface, and the heat treatment temperature was increased continuously to increase the pressure gap and then the core Ni extruded as a nano-sized powder, Ni and YSZ uniformly distributed. It was found that the anode of 50~200 nm with a consistent structure obtained in this study has electric conductivity that is approximately 3 times larger than that of a commercial anode.

  • A base isolation system is proposed for earthquake protection of structures. The system incorporates spherical supports for the base, a specially designed spring-cam system to keep the base rigidly supported under normal condition and to allow it to move for the duration of the earthquake under the constraint of a spring with optimized non-linear characteristics. A single-story model is constructed to investigate the feasibility of the concept. Numerical simulations of the system as well as experimental results show that 95% reduction of the transmitted force to the structure can be achieved. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this isolation mechanism, the maximum dynamic bending stress developed at predetermined critical points within the frame of the structure is measured. Significant reduction of the dynamic stresses is obtained.

  • In an effort to understand the hydrolytic degradation process of cured urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins responsible for the formaldehyde emission of wood-based composite panels, this study analyzed the influence of acid hydrolysis on the morphology of cured UF resins with different formaldehyde/urea (F/U) mole ratios such as 1.6, 1.4, 1.2 and 1.0. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was employed to observe both exterior and fracture surfaces on thin films of cured UF resins before and after the etching with hydrochloric acid as a simulation of the hydrolytic degradation process. FE-SEM images showed that the exterior surface of cured UF resin with the F/U mole ratio of 1.0 had spherical structures after the acid hydrolysis while the other cured UF resins were not the case. However, the fracture surface observation showed that all the samples possessed spherical structures in the cured state of UF resins although their occurrence and size decreased as the F/U mole ratio increased. For the first time, we found the spherical structures in cured UF resins of higher F/U mole ratio of 1.4. After the acid hydrolysis, the spherical structures became a much predominant at the fracture surface. These results indicated that the spherical structures in cured UF resinswere much more resistant to the hydrolytic degradation by the acid than amorphous region.

  • Nanorod ZnO and spherical nano ZnO for gas sensors were prepared by hydrothermal reaction method and hydrazine method, respectively. The nano-ZnO gas sensors were fabricated by a screen printing method on alumina substrates. The gas sensing properties were investigated for hydrocarbon gas. The effects of Co concentration on the structural and morphological properties of the nano ZnO:Co were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. XRD patterns revealed that nanorod and spherical ZnO:Co with a wurtzite structure were grown with (100), (002), (101) peaks. The sensitivity of nanorod and spherical ZnO:Co sensors was measured for 5 ppm $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air with that in target gases. The highest sensitivity to the $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas of spherical nano ZnO:Co sensors was observed at Co 6 wt%. The spherical nano ZnO:Co sensor exhibited a higher sensitivity to hydrocarbon gas than nanorod ZnO.

  • In this study, free vibration analysis of FG porous spherical cap reinforced by graphene platelets resting on Winkler-type elastic foundation has been surveyed for the first time. Three different types of porosity patterns are considered for the spherical cap whose two types of porosity patterns in the metal matrix are symmetric and the other one is uniform. Besides, five GPL patterns are assumed for dispersing of GPLs in the metal matrix. Tsai-Halpin and extended rule of the mixture are used to determine the Young modulus and mass density of the shell, respectively. Employing 3D FEM elasticity in conjunction with Hamilton's Principle, the governing motion equations of the structure are obtained and solved. The impact of various parameters including porosity coefficient, various porosity distributions in conjunction with different GPL patterns, the weight fraction of graphene Nano fillers, polar angles and stiffness coefficient of elastic foundation on natural frequencies of FG porous spherical cap reinforced by GPLs have been reported for the first time.
