  • In this study, aberration free aspherical lens design method named ray reverse tracing method is introduced. Differently from the traditional design method, the ray reverse tracing method traces the shape and location of a real object by use of its virtual image. From the result, especially spherical aberration free aspherical lens could be designed by use of the ray reverse tracing method. Furthermore, it could reduce the degree of dependence of optical characteristics on designer's ability, because deformation terms and optimization can be eliminated, which has been performed in conventional lens design process.

  • An aspheric lens is one of a key point optical element in the optical industry. The feature of an aspheric lens is not to have the spherical aberration. An aspheric lens is also essential element for high-precision and light-weight in the optical machine. Generally it have been used in a tailor progression an aspheric lens modelling much. In this study we applied a lay back-tracer using a index of refraction to draw a creative aspheric lens. Also we developed the automatic design program for aspheric lens. We manufactured the aspheric lens and executed a comparison experiment for refraction situation of shape and straightness experiment to inspect the drawn aspheric lens in this study.

  • Purpose: This study was to evaluate corneal topography, contrast sensitivity and ocular response of a RGP, back surface aspherical contact lens compared with a spherical contact lens. Methods: A total 37 subjects were fitted with a spherical lens in right eye and an aspherical in the left eye and were evaluated for changes in corneal topography and contrast sensitivity over a 2-month period. Results: Thirty-four of 37 subjects completed the 2-month study. The corneal topography did not show differences between spherical and aspherical RGP lenses. The eyes fitted with the aspherical lenses demonstrated a greater reduction in contrast sensitivity compared with their spherical counterparts under photopic condition. Subjects preferred comfort and ocular responses provided by the spherical lens. Conclusions: Corneal topography when comparing spherical and back surface aspherical RGP lenses did not show any significant difference in the subjects. Spherical RGP lens yields better contrast sensitivity and preference than aspherical RGP lens at photopic condition. Further investigation of aberrations induced by contact lens design is warranted to explain the observed differences in visual performance.

  • Purpose: The current study aimed to evaluate the reliability for the combined refractive power when a spherical lens and a cylindrical lens were overlapped in a trial frame. Methods: The refractive powers, central thickness and peripheral thickness of spherical trial lenses and cylindrical lenses with negative power were measured. The combined refractive power of the spherical and cylindrical lenses was measured by auto lens meter. Measurement was repeated by changing the insertion order, and their results were further compared with the calculated combined refractive power. Results: There was no correlation between the variation of central and peripheral thickness in trial lenses and that of the lens power. Among 79 trial lenses, 3 trial lenses wasn't met the international standard. The refractive power calculated by Gullstrand's formula that could compensate vertex distance had smaller difference with the estimated power when compared with that calculated by thin lens formula however, it was significantly different from the estimated power. The refractive powers were generally apparent regardless of the insertion order of a spherical lens and a cylindrical lens: thin lens formula > actual measurements > Gullstrand's formula. The error was only found in cylindrical power calculated by Gullstrand's formula when inserted a spherical lens inside and a cylindrical lens outside however, the error was found in both of cylindrical and spherical powers calculated by Gullstrand's formula when inserted as a opposite order. By comparing actual measurements of equivalent spherical power, the accuracy was higher and the possibility of over-correction was lower when inserted a spherical lens inside and a cylindrical lens outside. Conclusions: From the results, those were revealed that the combined refractive power is influenced by the factors other than the vertex distance and the refractive power varies in accordance with the insertion order of a spherical lens and a cylindrical lens. Thus, it can be suggested that the establishment of standard for these is neccesaty.

  • The optical glass lens is required high dimensional precision such as the lack of defect. In this paper, we examined the detectable defect by using the resonant ultrasound spectroscopy(RUS). The RUS is the measurement system which is to excite the specimen and to inspect the differences of resonant frequency pattern between acceptable specimen and specimen which has some defects. In this paper, for nondestructive evaluation by using RUS, we measured the resonant frequency of each specimen which is spherical and aspherical glass lens. With the results, we knew the polishing processing degree of spherical glass lens by the measured resonant frequency and could evaluate the characteristic of aspherical glass lens about some flaws.

  • This paper proposes a new method for measuring the power of spherical and cylindrical lens with 6 points light source, which is composed of a LED and six holes, and magnification ellipse fitting algorithm. Each measured diagonal length of 6 points light source is determined by the target lens power. After finding the center position of each light point with threshold method, 3 axis-diagonal lengths were calculated. The long axis and short axis power of cylindrical lens can be calculated by using magnification ellipse fitting algorithm with the magnification relationships between the initial diagonal lengths and the measured diagonal lengths changed by lens power.

  • In this paper, an ultrasonic phased array transducer with spherical liquid lens, which utilizes both electronic focusing by linear phased array and variable geometric focusing by spherical lens. is investigated. This system reduces the elevational beamwidth which is disadvantage of the 1-dimensional linear phased array, and adds real-time dynamic focusing capability by controlling the volume of liquid in the lens. A prototype of this transducer is constructed and tested. The experimental results are compared with those of computer simulations. The range of applications are in the hyperthermia applicators or ultrasonic image system with narrow beam and rapid scanning characterisitcs.

  • Spherical glass lenses are used in many optical industries. The curvature, eccentricity and height of a tool affect the surface roughness and curvature of lenses. The purpose of this study is the development and performance of a self-diagnostication ultra-precision lens polishing machine. In this paper, structure analysis is performed to reduce maximum displacement and to maintain outside the resonance region by CATIA V5. A spherical center setting gage is developed to increase accuracy of the manufactured lenses. The surface roughness, curvature and thickness of the manufactured lenses are measured and studied.

  • In this paper, the front radiuses of curvature of spherical spectacle lenses in the cosmetic and optical point of view are investigated and are calculated using Zinken-Sommer condition. The optical power of all spherical spectacle lens shows good quality at the test using autometic lensmeter. However the front radiuses of curvature of spherical spectacle lenses are quite different depending on the lens companies. The front radius of curvature of those lenses is larger than that calculated using Zinken-Sommer condition. We know that the front radius of curvature of commercial spectacle lens is emphasized more cosmetic aspect than optical point of view.

  • Recently, Light Emitting Diode(LED) has many advantages in comparison with conventional light sources; low power consumption, long lifetime, and less environmental pollution. Therefore, the use of LED is multiplying and increasing rapidly. In general, however, spherical lens is used in LED-lighting which cause many problems induces by optical aberration of spherical lens; low illumination, a yellow belt, unpleasant feeling in human eye. As a potential solution of this problem, aspherical lens can be employed. This study reports the improvement of LED-lighting performance by adopting aspherical lens. From the commercial program, $LightTools^{TM}$, the optical problem were ensured. And then, to improve this problem, optimum aspheric form was designed using Code $V^{TM}$.
