The purpose of this paper is to determine a two dimensional axisymmetric model through a comparative study between a three dimensional and an axisymmetric finite element analysis of the reactor coolant piping nozzle subject to internal pressure. The finite element analysis results show that the stress adopting the axisymmetric model with the radius of equivalent spherical vessel are well agree with that adopting the three dimensional model. The the radii of equivalent spherical vessel are 3.5 times and 7.3 times of the radius of the reactor coolant piping for the safety injection nozzle and for the residual heat removal nozzle, respectively.
Prediction of the maximum packing volume fraction with non-spherical particles has been one of the important problems in powder technology. The sphericity of fly ash particles depending on the particle diameter was measured by means of a CCD image processing instrument. An algorithm to predict the maximum packing volume fraction with non-spherical particles is proposed. The maximum packing volume fraction is used to predict the slurry viscosity under well dispersed conditions. For this purpose, Simha's cell model is applied for concentrated slurry with wide particle size distribution. Also, Usui's model developed for aggregative slurries is applied to predict the non-Newtonian viscosity of dense fly ash - water slurry. It is certified that the maximum packing volume fraction for non-spherical particles can be successfully used to predict slurry viscosity. The pressure drop in a pipe flow is predicted by using the non-Newtonian viscosity of dense fly ash-water slurry obtained by the present model. The predicted relationship between pressure drop and flow rate results in a good agreement with the experimented data obtained for a test rig with 50 mm inner diameter tube. Base on the design procedure proposed in this study, a feasibility study of fly ash hydraulic transportation system from a coal-fired power station to a controlled deposit site is carried out to give a future prospect of inexpensive fly ash transportation technology.
We combine the physics of the ellipsoidal collapse model with the excursion set theory to study the shapes of dark matter halos. In particular, we develop an analytic approximation to the nonlinear evolution that is more accurate than the Zeldovich approximation; we introduce a planar representation of halo axis ratios, which allows a concise and intuitive description of the dynamics of collapsing regions and allows one to relate the final shape of a halo to its initial shape; we provide simple physical explanations for some empirical fitting formulae obtained from numerical studies. Comparison with simulations is challenging, as there is no agreement about how to define a non-spherical gravitationally bound object. Nevertheless, we find that our model matches the conditional minor-to-intermediate axis ratio distribution rather well, although it disagrees with the numerical results in reproducing the minor-to-major axis ratio distribution. In particular, the mass dependence of the minor-to-major axis distribution appears to be the opposite to what is found in many previous numerical studies, where low-mass halos are preferentially more spherical than high-mass halos. In our model, the high-mass halos are predicted to be more spherical, consistent with results based on a more recent and elaborate halo finding algorithm, and with observations of the mass dependence of the shapes of early-type galaxies. We suggest that some of the disagreement with some previous numerical studies may be alleviated if we consider only isolated halos.
In this study, we investigate the effects of elliptical shape of Asian dust particles on the estimation of aerosol optical depth by implementing T-matrix method into WRF/Chem Dust Model. The phase function calculated by assuming elliptical particle shape near $110{\sim}160^{\circ}$ of scattering angle showed about 20 times larger than that calculated by assuming spherical particle shape. Significant difference of extinction efficiency was found with an increase of size parameter and aspect ratio. From the simulations of two Asian dust events occurred on 1 April 2007 and 16 March 2010, we found that the difference of extinction efficiency between elliptical and spherical particle shape was about 5~8%. The aerosol optical depth calculated by assuming elliptical particle shape with 1.6, 1.4 and 1.2 of aspect ratio was about $4.0{\pm}0.5%$, $2.0{\pm}0.2%$, and $1.0{\pm}0.1%$ larger than those estimated by assuming spherical particle shape.

In this paper, it is proposed hew the rigid element method suggested in the first paper can be applied to the elastic and elasto-plastic analysis of spherical shell with the open stiff ring. In the analytical model, the solution domain is divided into rectangular-shaped spherical bending elements. Each contact surface of two adjacent elements is interconnected with four elastic springs, and it is assumed that the internal forces are distritributed into springs. The 6 degrees of freedom of the element are placed in the center of elements, and the 6 cen-teroidal rigid displacements affect other elements through springs around elements. And then the solution domain is estimated by the behavior of elements and springs. In this study, these concepts are applied to the elastic and elasto-plastic analysis for the eight cases of the spherical shell according to the condition of stiff ring, the condion of loading and the size of opening. And then some numerical results such as the distribution of stresses, the force-displacement curves and the mode of fractures will he shown.
We investigate the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Massive Young Stellar Objects (MYSOs) using the various infrared observational data including the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) data. We model the dust envelopes around the stars using a radiative transfer model for spherically symmetric geometry. Comparing the model results with the observed SEDs of the two MYSOs (AFGL 4176 and AFGL 2591), we derive the relevant dust shell parameters including the dust opacity, the dust density distribution, and dust temperature distribution. We find that the spherical model can produce the SEDs roughly similar to the observations. We expect that the results would be helpful for making more realistic non-spherical dust envelope models for MYSOs.

This paper presents force feedback control performance of a 3DOF haptic device that can be used for minimally invasive surgery (MIS). As a first step, a 3DOF electrorheological (ER) joint is designed using a spherical mechanism. And it is optimized based on the mathematical torque modeling. Subsequently, the master haptic device is manufactured by the spherical joint. In order to achieve desired force trajectories, model based compensation strategy is adopted for the ER master. Therefore, Preisach model fur the PMA-based ER fluid is identified using experimental first order descending (FOD) curves. A compensation strategy is then formulated through the model inversion to achieve desired force at the ER master. Tracking control performances for sinusoidal force trajectory are presented, and their tracking errors are evaluated.
A spherical panoramic image does not conform to the pin-hole camera model, and, hence, it is not possible to utilize previous techniques consisting of plane-to-plane transformation. In this paper, we propose a new method to estimate the planar geometric transformation between the planar image and a spherical panoramic image. Our proposed method estimates the transformation parameters for latitude, longitude, rotation and scaling factors when the matching pairs between a spherical panoramic image and a planar image are given. A planar image is projected into a spherical panoramic image through two steps of nonlinear coordinate transformations, which makes it difficult to compute the geometric transformation. The advantage of using our method is that we can uncover each of the implicit factors as well as the overall transformation. The experiment results show that our proposed method can achieve estimation errors of around 1% and is not affected by deformation factors, such as the latitude and rotation.

The purpose of this paper is to develop an efficient method for the quick determination of multiple isocenters plans to provide optimal dose distribution in sterotactic radiosurgery. A Spherical dose model was developed through the use of fit to the exact dose data calculated in a 18cm diameter of spherical head phantom. It computes dose quickly for each spherical part and is useful to estimate dose distribution for multiple isocenters. An automatic computer search algorithm was developed using the relationship between the isocenter move and the change of dose shape, and adapted with a spherical dose model to determine isocenter separation and cellimator sizes quickly and automatically. A spheric81 dose model shows a comparable isodose distribution with exact dose data and permits rapid calculations of 3-D isodoses. the computer search can provide reasonable isocenter settings more quickly than trial and error types of plans, while producing steep dose gradient around target boundary. A spherical dose model can be used for the quick determination of the multiple isocenter plans with 3 computer automatic search. Our guideline is useful to determine the initial multiple isocenter plans.
This study mainly focused on the neutronics modeling of bubbles in bubbly flow in boiling water reactors. The bubble, ring and homogenous models were used for radial void fraction distribution. Effect of the bubble and ring models on the infinite multiplication factor and two-group flux distribution was investigated by comparing with the homogenous model. Square pitch unit cell geometry was used in the calculations. In the bubble model, spherical and non-spherical bubbles at random positions, sizes and shapes were produced by Monte Carlo method. The results show that there are significant differences among the proposed models from the viewpoint of physical interaction mechanism. For the fully-developed bubbly flow, $k_{inf}$ is overestimated in the ring model by about $720{\pm}6pcm$ with respect to homogeneous model whereas underestimated in the bubble model by about $-65{\pm}9pcm$ with a standard deviation of 15 pcm. In addition, the ring model shows that the coolant must be separated into regions to properly represent the radial void distribution. Deviations in flux distributions principally occur in certain regions, such as corners. As a result, the bubble model in modeling the void fraction can be used in nuclear engineering calculations.
