  • If the withdrawal force of strand driven roll which is controlled with predetermined speed isn't distributed regularly in continuous casting process, mold level is changed cyclically and slab quality is not good. In this paper, both casting speed control and load sharing control algorithm of strand driven roll according to ratio which is set up by operator at same time is proposed. The proposed algorithm is to share the withdrawal force by following torque current of each driven roll as average torque current by changing speed reference of each driven roll motor. The load sharing control with anti-wind up for improvement transient state is adopted and the proposed algorithm is implemented in POSCO pilot caster.

  • The elliptical trainers(ET) can be a good tool for educating engineers by analyzing physical responses in terms of Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER, epm) and Heart Rate (HR, bpm). For the various energy expenditure, exercise speed, and weight loss both RER and HR are studied in order to study the blood circulations based on the health training cardiorespiratory. As the results, (1) RER increases gradually as the energy expenditure, however, HR increases gradually up to a critical value and then increases rapidly. The critical value of the energy expenditure in our studies was 275 Cal. (2) RER increases gradually as the ET speed increases, however, HR increases gradually up to a critical value and then increases rapidly. The critical value of the ET speed in our studies was about 6.7km/h. (3) RER increases gradually as the weight loss increases (or, the metabolic cost increases), however, HR is almost nothing to do with the increase of the weight loss.

  • Market demand for hydro-mechanical transmission (HMT) for agricultural tractors has increased recently. To select a type of HMT satisfying design conditions, performance characteristics of 12 HMT types must be understood. This study was conducted to provide tractor engineers with a guideline to select the most appropriate HMT type for their design requirements. Characteristics on speed reduction ratio, power transmission efficiency, power regeneration, lock-up angular velocity, output torque ratio and torque ratio of planetary gear train axis of the 12 HMT types were investigated and presented as either formula or graphical forms. A guideline to select proper HMT type was also presented using 2 parameter: lock-up angular velocity (${\omega}_L$) and torque ratio of the planetary gear train axis. In addition, effect of gear ratio of the planetary gear train on the power transmission efficiency was investigated and a guideline to select the best gear ratio was also presented.

  • This study was carried out to develop a belt pick-up type one-row soybean cutter, using physical properties and production conditions of soybeans. The prototype soybean cutter consisted of 4 parts: cutting part, conveying part, collecting part, and travelling part. The prototype soybean cutter was designed to cut soybeans planted with a row spacing of 600 mm, and at a height of 30 mm from the bed bottom using a disk saw. Through various trials with different peripheral velocities of the disk saw and forward speed of the cutter, determined ranges of the peripheral velocity of the disk saw cutting soybeans stems were greater than 18.3 m/s. Spacing between pick-up belts (clearance) was in a range of 60~90 mm so that soybeans could be picked at heights greater than 25 cm, and the size and shape of the pick-up belt were determined the conventional manual harvesting method. The optimal ratio between the forward speed of cutter and the peripheral speed of pick-up belts were from 1 to 1.2 by theoretical analysis. the pick-up belts had a $35^{\circ}$ of tilted angle and $90^{\circ}$ of twisted angle to pick up soybeans safely from the plant input to the lower end of the belts and convey soybeans to the upper end of belts nearby a container. The soybeans at the rear container were dropped down on the soybean row with an interval. The effective field capacity of the prototype soybean cutter was 0.136 ha/h, reducing the working hour by 92% when compared with the manual cutting.

  • This paper presents a fast block-matching algorithm based on the normalized cross-correlation, where the elimination order is determined based on the gradient magnitudes of subblocks in the current macroblock. Multilevel Cauchy-Schwartz inequality is derived to skip unnecessary block-matching calculations in the proposed algorithm. Also, additional complexity reduction is achieved re-using the normalized cross correlation values for the spatially neighboring macroblock because the search areas of adjacent macroblocks are overlapped. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the speed-up ratio up to about 3 times in comparison with the existing algorithm.

  • Investigators who study on combustion in the cylinders of reciprocating piston type internal combustion engines have been encountered embarrassments due to the difficulties of adjusting specific parameter without interfacing other parameters such as cylinder wall temperature, composition of gas in the cylinder, existence of cylinder lubricant etc. Rapid compression expansion machine, the position and speed of piston of which are able to be controlled by means of a system controlled electrically, and actuated hydraulically could be utilized as one of the most preferable countermeasures against those difficulties. Several units of rapid compression expansion machines were developed but the speed up of frequency of piston movement still is the problem to be improved to copy with actual speed of internal combustion engines. Authors designed and manufactured a new rapid compression-expansion machine electrically controlled, hydraulically actuated, and computer programed and then examined the performance of one. Results of a set of experiments revealed acquirements of certain improvement on frequency of piston movement preserving the stability of system response and reproducing accurate compression ratio of cylinder, those are the key function for the in-cylinder combustion experiments on internal combustion engines.

  • Known as an important criterion that evaluates performance of future high-speed backbone networks, burst data loss ratio is well-studied in Optical Burst Switching networks. Current literatures mostly focus on reduce burst loss ratio without considering the system stability and link utilization after reducing. In this paper, we propose a novel framework which comes from feedback theoretic to dynamically control burst loss ratio in OBS. The proposed scheme tries to track the pre-set values of burst loss ratio and increases the stability and link utilization degree. The simulation results show that measured burst loss ratio always tracks setup reference with small errors, wavelength channel utilization is increased up to 2% and the system stability is also improved.

  • Recently it is strongly required on lower fuel consumption. lower exhaust emission, higher engine performance. and social demands in a spark ignition gasoline engine. In this study. the experimental engine used at test. it has been modified the lean burn gasoline engine. and used the programmable engine management system, and connected the controller circuit which is designed for the engine control. At the parametric study of the engine experiment, it has been controlled with fuel injection, ignition timing. swirl mode, equivalence ratio engine dynamometer load and speed as the important factors governing the engine performance adaptively. It has been found the combustion characteristics to overcome the hysteresis phenomena between normal and lean air-fuel mixing ranges. by mean of the look-up table set up the mapping values. at the optimum conditions during the engine operation. As the result, it is found that the strength of the swirl flow with the variation of engine speed and load is effective on combustion characteristics to reduce the bandwidth of the hysteresis regions. The results show that mass fraction burned and heat release rate pattern with crank angle are reduced much rather, and brake specific fuel consumption is also reduced simultaneously.

  • Optimization of engine desist and operation parameters using a genetic algorithm was demonstrated for direct injection diesel engine combustion. A micro genetic algorithm and a modified KIVA-3V code were used for the analysis and optimization of the engine combustion. At each generation of the optimization step the micro genetic algorithm generated five groups of parameter sets, and the five cases of KIVA-3V analysis were to be performed either in series or in parallel. The micro genetic algorithm code was also parallelized by using MPI programming, and a multi-CPU parallel supercomputer was used to speed up the optimization process by four times. An example case for a fixed engine speed was performed with six parameters of intake swirl ratio, compression ratio, fuel injection included angle, injector hole number, SOI, and injection duration. A simultaneous optimization technique for the whole range of engine speeds would be suggested for further studies.

  • This study analyzed characteristics of soft ground consolidation according to depths of vertical drain. As the result, when the depth ratio of vertical drains (L/D) were 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0, consolidation characteristics were similar up to 70% in consolidation degree under one-dimensional drain condition. However, above this degree, consolidation speed became slower as L/D became smaller. Two-dimensional drain condition also showed a similar tendency, but when L/D was 1.0, the consolidation speed was relatively higher.
