  • In this paper, a new method of obtaining specular surface shape by using five degrees of freedom camera system is described. The normal vectors of the surface are extracted by achieving the coincident between the camera axis and the surface normal vector. This method uses a five degrees of freedom (5DOF) camera to fulfill this task. From the normal vector data, the shape of the surface is reconstructed. The result shows that the methodology improves the 3-D shape of object measurement with good accuracy.

  • This study was peformed in two ways, which are 'Before' 'After' carrying out trench search through GPR which is called 'Non Destructive Geophysical' to the expected area where the remains of historic interest could be distributed within the highway construction site from Dae-gu to Busan. As a result, the layer containing gravel and sand has more irregular specular surface then others containing silt and clay, And, apart block irregular specular surfaces of prominence and depression patter appeared. After performing trench search, verified that the site yield dolmens and lots of stone implements.

  • Representing an environment as the probabilistic grids is effective to sense outlines of the environment in the mobile robot area. Outlines of an environment can be expressed factually by using the probabilistic grids especially if sonar sensors would be supposed to build an environment map. However, the difficult problem of a sonar such as a specular reflection phenomenon should be overcome to build a grid map through sonar observations. In this paper, the NRF(Neighborhood Recognition Factor) was developed for building a grid map in which the specular reflection effect is minimized. Also the reproduction rate of the gird map built by using NRF was analyzed with respect to a true map. The experiment was conducted in a home environment to verify the proposed technique.

SpeROD(Specular Reflector Optical Designer)는 2차원적인 형상설계 과정을 밟으며, 대칭형태의 반사판을 기초로 한다.

  • BRDF (bidirectional reflectance distribution function) is critical in realistic simulation of material appearances since it models the directional characteristics of reflection of light. Although many BRDF models have been proposed so far, it is still not easy to find one specific model that could represent all the reflection properties of real materials such as generalized diffusion, off-specular reflection, Fresnel effect, and back scattering. In this paper, we compare three BRDF models including B-spline volume BRDF (BVB), Cook-Torrance, and Lafortune in their ability to represent the measured BRDF data for physically-based rendering. We show that B-spline volume BRDF surpass the others in quality of data fitting and rendering, especially for materials without specular reflections.

  • We demonstrated transmission direct phase-measuring deflectometry (DPMD) with a specular phase object having discontinuous surfaces by using two displays and a two-dimensional array detector for display and by recording the distorted fringe patterns. Three-dimensional (3D) information was obtained by calculating the height map directly from the phase information. We developed a mathematical model of the phase-height relationship in transmission DPMD. Unlike normal transmission deflectometry, this method supports height measurement directly from the phase. Compared with other 3D measurement techniques such as interferometry, this method has the advantages of being inexpensive and easy to implement.

  • To prepare polyurethane coatings for top coatings of automobiles, acrylic resins containing 75% of solids were synthesized by a radical polymerization. The viscosity of the acrylic resins was increased with increasing OH values. Crosslinked acrylic-urethane clear coatings were obtained by curing reaction between the synthesized acrylic resins and hexamethylene diisocyanate(HDI) trimer(Desmodur N-3600). The physical properties from the following studies were carried out : viscosity(Zahn cup #2), adhesion, pensil hardness, and 60° specular gloss. Various properties of the acrylic-urethane clear coatings as top coatings of mobile coat were evaluated on the coating specimens. Adhesion property to a substrate, 60° specular gloss, and pencil hardness of prepared paint showed quite good properties.

  • In many vision tasks of the major obstacles is the specular highkight of smoth objects, which causes a misinterpretation of objects. This paper presents an dffcient algorithm for highight detection and object reconstruction, blsed on the theory of photometric stereo in which the location of highilight changes as the position of illumination source changes. Two images, referred to as base image and reference image.are sequentially taken with two different positionhs of the two images. The difference image is thresholded to detct the specular spike of the highlight. Then the specu-lar lobe around the specular spike is detected to reconstruct the object. The proposed algorithm can be applied to metals and dielectrics, regardlless of the surface chracteristics. This method can also be aplied to the case when the background is brighter than the object.

  • In this paper, we introduce a real-time method to render a 3D scene using image-based lighting. Previous approaches for image-based lighting focused on diffuse reflection and mirror-like specular reflection. In this paper, we provide a simple preprocessing approach to efficiently approximate Phong reflection model, which has been used for computer graphics applications for several decades. For diffuse reflection, we generate a texture map for diffuse reflection by integrating the source image in preprocessing step, similarly to the previous approaches. We adopt the similar idea to produce a set of specular reflection maps for various material shininess. By doing this, we can render a dynamic scene without high computational complexity or numerous texture map access.
